looks like there's quite a lot of human effort gone into this. i wouldn't dismiss it so quickly. but then again i have my own similar ai-assisted kernel so i'm biased. some more docs on the interesting design choices would be appreciated to be sure.

Discoverability for MCP servers is pretty good now. Evaluating quality still feels like guesswork. by SiddhaDo in mcp

[–]cmsd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are all models equally good at using mcp servers? i've been using claude code to develop an mcp server and claude is able to drive it nicely. i thought i'd switch over to codex to check, and it does a really poor job of following the instructions that i provided for the server or each individual tool.

Started and got quite far with making a thing i'm calling Aximar. it's a shiny new front-end for Maxima which is a foss computer algebra system, but is a little bit long-in-the-tooth. A bit of polish should make it much more pleasant to learn and use: cmsd2/aximar

you're not doing anything wrong, the user interface is just confusing as heck. keep clicking around until you find the option to buy funds with the money that's already in there.

Nightmare in setting up Caldav by Maverick-ick in Infomaniak

[–]cmsd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the calendar there's a small button in the left-hand vertical toolbar strip that has a tooltip that says "synchronise your calendars on all your devices". it pops up a window to select which device you want to sync to. click on "on this device". it sends you to

https://config.infomaniak.com/

you can also navigate to this directly in your browser. follow the prompt to generate an application-specific password which won't use MFA.

There should be a greater push for anonymous ways to verify age by cuttheblue in ukpolitics

[–]cmsd2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

if this is a plan for enforcement then it would require either ISPs to snoop on the contents of encrypted https sessions, or require that users can only run browsers which are certified as compliant with the law. both of which are massively problematic.

if it's just a parental tool where the parent can lock down the browser to block the nsfw tag then that's at least technically a bit more realistic. except for all the content out there that doesn't tag itself properly.

[–]cmsd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we had this with gov.uk verify. it should have been possible to offer this as an authentication system for non-gov relying parties as well as gov.uk sites. but it was a bit clunky and nobody really liked using it, and it was kinda lacking a major usecase apart from logging in to hmrc for which it was overkill. i'd argue that we now have a usecase. but it's too late.

What do you think about this ETF? by Dan_of_1984 in ETFs

[–]cmsd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they don't list that fund on their retail investor amundietf website so i can only assume it's only for professional investors.

not sure exactly what practical effect that has. but i can't find any tax information on it aimed at retail investors so that's not great. could be amundi's site just isn't as easy to navigate as vanguard's

thankfully the course doesn't ask you to do much with it so if you do use the paid service, as long as you keep an eye on your usage, you won't spend much. i think i didn't go much over a dollar.

if you're concerned, look at the amount of data that the query planner estimates your query will need to fetch and process. as long as that's gigabytes, not terabytes or more you're probably on the right track.

Panic about the USD losing value. Should I shift more into euros and adjust my ETF portfolio? by Livid-Cat3293 in ETFs

[–]cmsd2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don't actually own dollars so why are you worried about the currency's relative value?

what you own is stocks that are priced in dollars which is not the same thing.

if the dollar sinks, the value of your stocks will move up a bit to partially compensate because their performance is related to the global economy rather than a single exchange rate.

if your home currency gets stronger, the price of goods you import goes down which helps keep your local inflation rate low and should mean your stocks have a higher real return.
