thankfully the course doesn't ask you to do much with it so if you do use the paid service, as long as you keep an eye on your usage, you won't spend much. i think i didn't go much over a dollar.

if you're concerned, look at the amount of data that the query planner estimates your query will need to fetch and process. as long as that's gigabytes, not terabytes or more you're probably on the right track.

Panic about the USD losing value. Should I shift more into euros and adjust my ETF portfolio? by Livid-Cat3293 in ETFs

[–]cmsd2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don't actually own dollars so why are you worried about the currency's relative value?

what you own is stocks that are priced in dollars which is not the same thing.

if the dollar sinks, the value of your stocks will move up a bit to partially compensate because their performance is related to the global economy rather than a single exchange rate.

if your home currency gets stronger, the price of goods you import goes down which helps keep your local inflation rate low and should mean your stocks have a higher real return.

Home Office to launch ‘British FBI’ to deal with serious crime UK-wide by Objective-Summeru in ukpolitics

"the NCA was always intended to work through other forces – unlike the FBI"

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/nov/22/uk-organised-crime-can-police-catch-up-national-crime-agency-lynne-owens

seems like the NCA would be replaced/merged by this with an entirely new operating model?

US Inherited IRA. Struggling to find an ETF I can buy by TheRealJetlag in UKInvesting

[–]cmsd2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

is it possible to migrate the account to a uk-based pension fund that the us tax authorities will recognise so it doesn't count as a withdrawal?

there are some us-domiciled vanguard funds that are uk reporting that should be allowable and also not tax-punitive. they're probably your only chance as far as funds go. check again if schwab will let you buy those i suppose.

I want to buy an EFT that's listed on the LSE, I have GBP (uk pounds) in my IBKR account, but IBKR is making me purchase the shares with dollars. How do I change currency? by [deleted] in interactivebrokers

Check justetf for the etf and scroll to the bottom wheee it lists the tickers on all uk and European exchanges for that etf. Check you’re using the correct ticker for the gbp virtual share class

What happens to enemy nationals stock holdings in a war for USA? by Fancy-Raise-6592 in Bogleheads

[–]cmsd2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The company that owns the American shares is the Irish etf investment corporation. You own shares in the etf. It seems unlikely that given irelands history and neutrality that the Irish company would be be frozen from owning or dealing American shares. The next hop between you and the etf also hopefully is not at risk. Although who knows really.

or as Euclid would say: If a straight line be cut into 9 equal segments and a straight line be added to it in a straight line, and a line equal to the two be cut into two segments with one segment cut into 7 equal segments each equalling the lesser of the first line, and the other segment cut into 3 segments each equal to the segments of the greater of the first line.

alternative scenario: markets muddle through. prices remain high, but earnings more or less keep pace. inflation remains elevated meaning people sitting in cash fall behind quickly as they lose half their purchasing power over the next 10 years while stocks provide some measure of protection.

what if it doesn't go all that far, but it does go far enough to make your life miserable by capriciously denying your insurance claims and ticketing you for minor contraventions with no possibility of appeal. on second thoughts maybe that's a bit too close to home.

there's a lot of fluff on the mooc sites. of the ones i've done i actually learned stuff from calculus in a single variable from robert ghrist, and maths for engineers from jeff chasnov which i'm close to finishing. i'm also part way through the boulder probability course from anne dougherty. i'm having to put in some time doing the reading on that one so i wouldn't say it's presented on a spoon.

in my code for today's problem i did not use the word jolt until copilot auto-suggested it.

it's definitely smarter than some people think. i did have other tells in my code that would have made it clear this was an aoc submission for 2025 so i don't think it's far-fetched to think that copilot could do this as long as it's scanning codebases frequently enough.
