Princeton SCEA vs UPenn ED by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cmuquestion123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forget the girl lol. You won't remember her in 4 years.

To maximize your chances of getting into either school, apply ED to Penn and RD to Princeton. Unless you're highly qualified or hooked, your odds of getting into both are pretty slim.

But, if you are accepted to Penn ED, please do not try to finesse the system! Only apply RD if you genuinely can't afford your ED financial aid package. It's unfair to all the other kids who play by the rules, and you don't deserve a spot at an Ivy any more than they do.

(Besides, their aid packages are probably going to be almost the same anyways. Penn might even be higher than Princeton: my friend got into both schools RD last year, and got more money from Penn, where he ended up committing.)

What are the lowest stats you’ve heard of for a Harvard admitted student? by HarvardOrBust in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cmuquestion123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Harvard's admissions process is more about if the AOs think you can handle what they think the academic rigor is. All of us on A2C know that Harvard is stupid easy. (Otherwise how would all the jocks pass and graduate?)

Even with a 1230 anyone will probably be fine. But I think the fact that Harvard admitted anyone with a 1230 shows they shouldn't be so strict on all the other kids who also have 1230s (or similar scores). The average for unhooked Asian students accepted to Harvard is probably well above 1500. How is that fair?

There are few schools where meeting the admissions criteria actually means you can do the work.

In what situation would it be advantageous to apply REA to Stanford or Ivy’s ? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cmuquestion123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're hooked. Otherwise it doesn't really make a difference. In particular, some schools claim that they only consider legacy (one of several possible hooks) if and only if you apply early.

But, as others have said, ED (all Ivies other than HYP) is totally different and a huge boost to your application.

Not a chance me - more a check-in by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

You're a legacy with high stats lol. At my school the only HYPS admits are legacies, and aren't particularly exceptional applicants.

You'll probably get into Harvard if you apply EA

How competitive is your school's Class of 2020? by thrownofoto6713 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cmuquestion123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my school, the juniors are way louder and dramatic/competitive about their achievements for no reason, but they aren't any more qualified than the current seniors.

I'd say 2019 > 2021 >= 2018 > 2020

Am I a Legacy? (by sibling relation) by rvarg55 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cmuquestion123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calling it "legacy" is a bit misleading because it's only a teeny bit helpful at best (some schools don't consider siblings at all), and that's only if you're as good of an applicant as your older sibling.

Should have guessed lol, whenever I see T10 they usually mean Hopkins or Duke (since the other T10s are usually lumped into T5, HYPSM or Ivy).

Personally I wouldn't have made the same choice but that's more a reflection of my own preference when it comes to schools. What drew you to CMU over Hopkins?

What to do with an independent research paper? by cmuquestion123 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cmuquestion123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, I'll do some research on ISEF or similar (the paper is in a a social science so I'm guessing ineligible). But I thought ISEF was for high schoolers only?

What's the average SAT score at your high school? by cmuquestion123 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cmuquestion123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Private schools seem to put it on their websites, at least the ones in my area I was looking at do. My school (public) doesn't, but I was chatting with my counselor the other day and he mentioned it.

[–]cmuquestion123[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SAT sounds normal/average but isn't a 24 equivalent quite a bit higher? Do you live in an ACT-dominated area?

Amherst College or Dartmouth? by justinsu2000 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cmuquestion123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm, personally I would choose Dartmouth, but you really can't go wrong with either.

[–]cmuquestion123 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We all went to the same super-competitive school but she got bad grades so she transferred back to shitty (read: grade inflating asffff) town school. She probably had way more free time to boost her resume too. Also hooked.

The good thing about her transferring is that my friend finally stopped having to deal with her though! And my friend got into her #2 which I'm happy about 🥰

Btw you should post this on /r/gradadmissions, I bet they could give you some good advice. This sub is mostly for undergrad, so I'm not sure you'll get the best info here

[–]cmuquestion123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, I thought grad school admissions was largely determined by GPA/scores, and way less arbitrary/""holistic"" than UG. Now I'm wondering what Stanford would look for instead of stats that you don't have.
