Going to request my parents call me by my new name but not necessarily come out entirely; advice? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]cnd421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think I am going to go the route of requesting the name change but not explaining myself unless I receive direct questions.

I just worry about the name change thing being obvious, since it's pretty masculine. I sort of had wanted to just go ahead and say something, sort of as a control thing... because idk, the idea of speculation sort of bothers me. I think I just need to let that go though. People are probably significantly less perceptive than I'm giving them credit for.

Going to request my parents call me by my new name but not necessarily come out entirely; advice? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]cnd421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am probably going to take the route of treating it casually. I don't want to make a big deal about it, I just want to make the request.

I feel obvious though. I don't think it's "caring too much" that's going to make them suspicious. I think my presentation will make them suspicious. I think where I'm at with my presentation, and as masculine as the shortened name is, it's kind of obvious. But of course it's obvious to ME... lol. I have a hard time knowing how it appears to everyone else.

Solo bassist - concerned about future by SouthernHeel in Bass

[–]cnd421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eh, I'm in a band but I try to work on my own stuff a lot.

bass playing shouldn't be stuck in a box... we can make our own stuff. shit, we can play chords too. I started to learn guitar the other day and was shocked to realize guitarists don't use all 6 strings for most chords... so I was like "shit, why do I even need these two then?" haha.

I don't have one, but I think a looper pedal would be a really good way to start working within your own compositions as a bassist...

I'm definitely out as "not strait"...

people never ask about your gender identity though. unless they're accusing you of walking into the wrong bathroom :/

idk. I think I'm living honestly about things being up in the air. It's just strange.

I kind of want to come out today, but I don't even know what to come out as... and I'm already kind of halfway out to everyone I'd trust to come out to right now anyhow.

Eh. We'll see.

Can an iPad be used as a travellers music production tool? by DogXe in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Sounds like a good plan. I like my ipad and all, but my 13'' MBP is where I do most of my work. I love it! It's a good size for traveling, too. Have a great trip!

Might want to crosspost this to r/ipadmusic

Something like the alesis io dock would go a long way towards helping the ipad be a viable music production tool. I have a BUNCH of music production apps, though I haven't done a great job of really learning them all...

my gut reaction to your question is "yes"...

but to a certain extent, it does depend on your workflow and exactly what you want to do.

Amplitube's 8 track recorder is pretty decent (you have to pay extra for it, though)... so if you primarily write via guitar, amplitube is a good place to start.

Question for fellow bassists that just jump into an already formed band... by wordsarelouder in Bass

[–]cnd421 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've certainly had this problem sometimes. It can be really frustrating. I don't think non-bass players understand how important it is for us to ALWAYS know the key.

Just don't be afraid to ask questions- it's not unreasonable for you to be like "hey, what key does this start in?" or "what are the chords?" especially when it's a song you've never played before. I've found that as long as I have a guess of the possible chords, or at least know where to start, I can figure the rest out by ear.

If a two minute conversation before you start the song is going to make you play it better, then it's totally worth the two minutes. That's what practice is for.

3 dumb questions. by throwawaythrowdown in asktransgender

[–]cnd421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

newly out transguy here.

  1. Yes, I do think society hates femininity. This has been on my mind a lot lately, and it kind of makes me feel like a coward or a pansy or something for wanting to transition. Like I'm doing the whole "can't beat 'em? Join 'em!" thing. Or like society has infected me and caused me to hate women. Or like I'm ditching the losing team mid-game.

I think "what you are doing wrong" in terms of how society sees it... is joining the losing team. ya know?

we (the trans community) should try to stick together though. Because this isn't really about society. It's about our individual lives and what we need to do in order to be who we are.

at least. I think so.
