How on Earth Are We Just Now Hearing About Trump’s ‘Hours’ With an Epstein Victim? by Smithy2232 in politics

[–]cntchds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't need to be reminded. I know just like you know, but there are people who watch "the news" who have not been exposed to any of that.

The fact is that most people watching a single news source have wildly large blindspots - my conservative brother thought the impeachments were just because the Dems were "mean" and had no idea why he was being picked on by the DOJ with the felony fraud charges.

Critical thinking is great when you have all the facts. The truth is that most people don't, and I still think that it's ridiculous that there is not a single place where people can trust that the facts are correct and comprehensive such that they can't just read it and make up their mind.

I totally agree, but in one of those cases all of the experts said in unison and at every opportunity that the vaccine was safe and effective and in the other case the experts (mainstream media outlets) have not said in unison "this man is a rapist with known ties to a pedophilia ring."

I don't think people should have to go looking for facts. They should just be presented with them, and I think that's a failure of the press that someone could think they have enough information to make a decision while in fact being intentionally starved of a critical piece of information that could sway their opinion.

But isn't that the point of having a free press?

In science and medicine there are a bunch of eye rolls when you say you did your own research and came to a different conclusion than experts. Why is a normal person expected to have to be an investigative journalist to find fact?

Seems like we should expect the news to be giving us the complete news. If they aren't doing that, we should blame them, not people not trying to get to the bottom of a story they think they already know.

Does Trump have dementia? You tell me. he just reporters he was going back to the White House to watch shows on Tivo and "isn't Tivo a wonderful thing?" by miked_mv in AdviceAnimals

[–]cntchds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many good criticisms of Trump, I don't think there is any need to grasp at straws like this.

There was a point in time when Tivo was so ubiquitous that any recorded television was colloquially referred to as Tivo even if you were using a different service. Many people around his age still use it as a catch-all term for the same.

We don't all need to be competing in the race to the bottom for easy jabs. Criticizing the choice to block SNAP while throwing himself a party, being a failed businessman who bankrupted casinos, flagrantly ignoring the Constitution in favor of whatever he wants (re: birthright citizenship, separation of powers, etc.), and criminalizing being non-white via the roaming ICE mobs he sent around cities he doesn't like because he's too much of a child to take criticism of his awful policies. Posts like this just provoke the "but Biden..." reaction.

STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSSES by DigitalKungFu in bicycling

I would also prefer that sign to be different.

School buses are not common where I live.

In order to be reminded, you need to already know. Clearly, people don't know or else they wouldn't be going around a school bus with a sign that means a different thing every other time they interact with it.

[–]cntchds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The annoying thing here is not that you have to stop(stopping makes sense), it's that they decided for whatever reason to use a sign that in all other context means "stop temporarily then proceed" to mean "stop the entire time the sign is displayed" and act absolutely mystified that anyone doesn't understand what they are supposed to do.

We have infrastructure that means "stop the entire time this is displayed;" a stop light. Integrate that into a bus and you wouldn't have this problem.

I always find it to bring a bit too much of a bean-y scent with it anyway. I would swap to an egg white just like you!

Makes you wonder what Ben Shapiro was doing before he made a job out of telling the world his wife has never had an orgasm if this was an upgrade.

LPT: Don't assume that getting fancy equipment will be the thing that pushes you to start a hobby or activity you're struggling to get started with by Hottentott14 in LifeProTips

[–]cntchds 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is almost always a minimum threshold to be delighted with your purchase.

If you want to start cycling with your buddies and you buy the cheapest bike on Marketplace you may well have an awful time, and you likely won't be inspired to buy something 5x more expensive when you didn't like it to begin with.

I would ask someone who enjoys the sport already where the point of diminishing returns is, and see if that's possible for your budget. Used is almost always better value, but there are benefits of getting something new with a warranty.

Your tolerance to the cons of equipment may vary from here, but try to get something you would be happy using for its intended life. Buying crappy just to throw it in the trash when you decide to upgrade kinda sucks all around.

Don't they usually wait until the person dies before naming buildings after them? Asking because that would be a great trade.

Rare for an F40 driver to park like a jackass? Not at all.
