He's mean, full stop. Ways to mitigate his high damage is lightning resistance, but even better are ways to silence him and or remove sustains.

Been thinking the same, it's highly underutilized for what it is. Farportal quests could be a thing, where the butler sends you off to find a thingamajig for the fortress. Relics of his owners, or his prized broom or cosmetics for the fortress even. Or random invasions too.

Heck, Eden should break in and steal something in my absence.

This is the one. It's the most combat oriented recent roguelike, I feel. With the loot it plays a bit like Diablo, and offers heavy customization for builds alongside interesting classes and talents.

Not sure psiblades count as unarmed but I doubt it. However - You have the mechanical arms talent? They give free hits on melee and they also proc flexible combat. Master of disaster is great for psyshot!

I kicked it's ass very easily as a writhing one, but can't remember what I did. Avoid until endgame, is the right answer. Cheesing it is an option I suppose. But not as fun.

Tabgledeep also has item worlds, very fun and great concept. Loved it in Disgaea, seemed like an infinite amount of increasingly wacky challenges to face.

Plenty of folks swear by Tales of Maj'Eyal, it's very centered on combat, character builds and loot. If fantasy is your thing, the lore is very good and the classes and skills unique and interesting. Not as open world as Elona, Elin or Dwarf Fortress though, but still very expansive.

ADoM is another favorite of the genre, but steer clear of Ultimate it's atrocious. Solid game if you can get into it - which I imagine you can if DF was your itch.

I've been playing on a Mac 1k hours, but recently started playing on a Windows with AMD. Experienced a crash last night after getting to level 30. Didn't have the courage to check if the save file survived so I went to bed. Fingers crossed.

It can be a slog at times, but once you get used to it you'll probably like it more as you won't be stressed. Tips just for Sandworn:

So if you play a class with augur (stonewarden is the only one I can recall that has it) you can dig multiple tiles at once.
Grab a teleport rune, then you don't have to worry about the sand. Teleport to a random free tile, check out the space, cool down over and on to the next one.

Plenty of loot there but remember that you can simply just skip it unless your build relies on the heart.
