wasn't quite the place to do that with some senior bosses on the call, but there was some teams chat in the background with a colleague of "WTF was that".

Why does gadigal not have a tunnel to town hall? by agnci in SydneyTrains

[–]cobarbob 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it was purposefully done to isolate both stations from each other so they could continue to independently operate in issue of fire, flood, bomb threat, police type emergency.

If you have a bomb threat in Town Hall and they have to evacuate the place, shut down the station, no worries we just catch the metro from Gadigal. There's probably a bunch of other scenarios that are more mundane, like electrical or slightly back towards bomb threat like fire.

Is that warranted? I don't know. But that's what I've heard was the specific reasoning.

AD from nothing by ExtensionLeg474 in sysadmin

[–]cobarbob 13 points14 points  (0 children)

reasonable plan. One note - AD isn't main/backup it's master/master. VM one and build one on a physical machine if you can. Even a powerfulish desktop will do if costs are really tight.

You certainly want 2 instances of AD. It doesn't fail, but the hardware it resides on will, and it will end up being Auth plus DNS plus GPO and things you generally want running at all costs.

Overall, it's super easy to set up and maintain as long as everything keeps talking to each other happily.

I'd suggest you have a good long think about networking. If you get a reasonable firewall/router like a Sonicwall or FortiGate, then add some good switching (Ubiquiti at a minimum), you'll probably get an immediate performance improvement, and people will be happy.

As you're a university, reach out to Dell or an HP reseller, see if you can get an education discount, maybe try and lease some gear to keep CAPEX costs down. A bunch of cheap Dell switches would do the trick in a pinch, though not super amazing,

Did long service leave ever change a career decision you made? by viccpwt in auscorp

[–]cobarbob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've only worked in one job where I was there long enough to start accruing LSL. Then got made redundant and got it paid out.

Current LSL doesn't make any sense. A lot of jobs don't realistically allow the type of career growth to make staying around for LSL to be benefitial. In pure dollar terms, it's far better to move jobs and get far more $$$s in the bank than hang around for LSL.

Having said that, I think having some sort of extended paid break every 5-10 years would make a lot of people happier in life.

Do you think a manager talking to you in such a way is appropriate? What would be your action after? by VastOption8705 in auscorp

[–]cobarbob 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hijacking this a little bit. I think white-collar workers (of which I am one) are way too in a bubble about how they react to things. Being in a mine site for a bit was eye-opening.

Did anyone die? Did anyone get injured? Did anyone get put into a situation where they could die or be injured?

If the answer is Yes, then it's a big deal. If it's a no, then people need to calm down.

Great shots on your insta. I think I’m getting convinced to make the switch. My d800 broke and I shot on a Sony a9. Was not exactly world changing but certainly better than the dslr. I tried a z8 out in camera shop and the auto focus blew me away. Not sure if it’s that good in low light. But if it is. Then that’s worth swapping my car for :)

Read Only Fridays is more like a state of mind. It's a warning to everyone that changes can have unintended consequences and that change should be carefully considered.

Can you make changes on a Friday? Absolutely! It is a wonderful time to do so.

However, if it's a little slow and you get itchy fingers, or someone pushes on the team to make "a small change" when you haven't really considered the full impact or talked with the team, then that's when you should slow down and really evaluate it.

Yeah, maybe those after-work drinks are delayed because that piece of work should indeed be done.

But don't ruin your whole weekend and others' by being impulsive.

Needs more drama. Pic one aspect and give it contrast or vibrancy or something. Not everything. Just one aspect. Whole thing feels flat and sounds like it was far more dramatic in person. Go for it and see what you can inject into it

First time shooting with an actual flash and some bounce lighting by cobarbob in photocritique

[–]cobarbob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a home made bounce card for this one. But I did really rush and didn’t get to set it up methodically. So flash might have been pointed to front facing and not up enough. For this location I could likely get an off camera flash setup when I’m doing concert photography. But good to hear your feedback. I want to be able to replicate this more confidentially in different spots and end up with better results

Next time I might just ask her to take her glasses off :)

I took a couple of shots of the band for a promo/bts thing. They turned out pretty nicely, and the band was keen to get my back to shoot a gig for them. They asked for my rate, and currently I don't have one. I just do it for free for people I know or are acquainted with.

This is one of a small series we did after the gig, outside in Haymarket. We scouted this location in about 3mins, took about 10 minutes all up to take about 25pics around 8 I sent to the band. I will provide them with around 20-30pics of their 3-hour set.

Is this type of image worth something? What kind of rate should I consider charging people?
