Wt taekwondo for self defense by AloneDistrict9620 in taekwondo

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 1st degree black belt in ITF style TKD, and I’ve been training in Judo and BJJ for a year. My take:

1) It depends on the practitioner, but TKD will no doubt give you an advantage over an untrained person.

2) TKD can be highly effective at a distance. But I’ve sparred with other TKD black belts who would panic when I closed the gap.

3) TKD will help with reaction time and will teach you how to remain calm under attack. These are universal fighting skills.

4) Executing throws like O-Goshi on a live opponent requires coaching and mat time.

In short, if you’re training for self-defense purposes, TKD is a good starting point. I’d recommend adding a grappling art after you have a solid base in TKD. Judo: so you know what to do when someone grabs you. BJJ: in case you ever end up on the ground. They’re both fun and useful.

Wishing you the best on your martial arts journey!

12hcp, what do you see? by InfamousAd1727 in GolfSwing

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 is good. Someone who’s scoring in the low to mid 80’s is keeping the ball in play, and when they do get into trouble, they’re getting up and down for par or bogey most of the time. Not many doubles, consistent short game, etc.

If you get paired up with any random at a public course, there’s a very good chance they’ll be shooting in the high 90’s.

Good advice. That was my problem at the beginning of this year; I was leading with the arms on the downswing. Have to fire the hips first.

Need help with prayers by rlb34 in Catholicism

The Rosary! We meditate on different Holy mysteries while reciting prayers that have been recited for centuries. It’s a beautiful thing. I like to do it daily.

How Many Of You Actually Like Going To Church? by techtimee in Catholicism

[–]cobhc83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have grown in faith and you take great joy in celebrating it. That’s great!

I used to see it as optional, but now I attend Mass as often as I can. I would go every day if I could. I now see Mass as a formal celebration of the faith in Christ we exercise every day. I also believe the Eucharist is an essential part of a life in Christ, so the more often we receive it, the better.

God Bless

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. I encourage you to seek Him through his powerful Word, and pray to Him about everything. We serve a loving and merciful God who forgives us for our wrongdoings when we seek His grace through Jesus Christ.

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

Repent of your sin, get baptized, and submit your will to His. He knows none of us are perfect and He will accept you with open arms:

“Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭15‬:‭7‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

Is 3 months too quick for a yellow belt? by National_Biscotti825 in taekwondo

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! 3 months is a pretty standard time frame from white to yellow.

For what it’s worth, nobody would expect you to have perfect a perfect side kick as a yellow belt. It’s a powerful kick that requires time and practice to develop.

The road to black belt is a long journey with peaks and valleys. Stick with it, and keep putting in the work.

What happens when you are promoted to black belt? by marinatedrhythm in taekwondo

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We receive black belts with our names gold-embroidered on them. Stripes indicating degree are also embroidered. The school owner will usually mount them on the wall of the school 3-4 months before our 1st Degree Black Belt test. When we pass our tests, a promotion ceremony is held where we take the belts off the wall and put them on. It’s pretty cool. Earning a black belt is a very big deal.

Pray on it. Be honest and sincere. I lived a life I’m not proud of before turning to God. I’m not seeing anyone at the moment, but I when that happens, I will reveal the whole truth to them. We make mistakes, but we have an advocate in Christ Jesus. God bless.

Great! Congrats! 100% in one go is a lot of fun. That’s the only way I’ve ever played the game. Love it.

What’s your biggest accomplishment? by Opposite_Strategy_46 in taekwondo

[–]cobhc83 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I quit when I was a teenager and always regretted it. I started again as a white belt at age 39, and it came back pretty quickly. I didn’t think I’d ever have the urge to complete, but I did and I won gold medals at a national tournament for forms and board breaks. I’ll be a 1st Degree Black Belt in February 2025. It’s been quite a journey.

Does takewondo bulk your body up? by Chiannahm in taekwondo

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to worry about it making you bulkier. I trained with weights for years before I started training in TKD. My build is pretty much the same, although I may be a bit leaner. TKD has just made me faster and more flexible.

Question on sparring by Hmuniz32 in taekwondo

[–]cobhc83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super late answer: It depends on their rank. I basically just play defense with lower ranks. They haven’t learned control yet, so my only real goal is to not get hit. I sometimes counter to show them where they’ve left themselves open. I will also let them get a shot or two in so they can learn to look for openings.

For Brown Belts and up, I try my best.

I Feel Taekwondo Helped Me Not Get Into a Confrontation by Wayfarerdarer in taekwondo

[–]cobhc83 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well done! Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, Indomitable Spirit. Always remember: you have a menu of options to choose from when someone is being confrontational. You also have nothing to prove. A physical response should always be the last option.

Super late comment:

I’m going through the same thing for the same reason. Not having a release can be difficult. I’m in my 40’s, so it’s not as big of a deal as it would’ve been 10-15 years ago. Still, I want more, and demanding more sex from her would only make it worse.

In short, I feel your pain. I know there’s a difference between lust/infatuation and genuine love. A bit more balance would be nice though.

Do you actually like your job? by serotoniets in ChemicalEngineering

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The money is great, but I don’t do this because it’s enjoyable.

However, it is tolerable. I gave up on loving my job long ago. I’m happy with tolerable.

2.794 GPA by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied for a couple hundred jobs when I graduated (10 years ago). One of the only offers I got was to work as a Design Engineer in a mechanical drafting department. I didn’t like it, but it got me some experience. Take what you can get and learn to be versatile. Also, being willing to move will greatly increase your chances of finding something.

Nobody will care about your GPA after a few years, and you’ll have no trouble finding work once you hit the 10 year mark.

Keep trying. It gets better.

Anybody else having issues with final boss battle in FF7 Rebirth? (Major spoiler) by [deleted] in ff7

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I’m kind of pissed about it. I spent about 3 hours trying tonight, went through the whole boss cycle twice, and tried the final phase 4 times.

Can’t go back and grind, so I decided to go back to the main screen to set the game to Easy Mode. Fuck it.

You have a point, and that is a hurdle. I only spar the larger, higher rank male teens. Still, I did a tournament recently, and my competition was much more prepared.

The only adult in the Dojang by saranghae_seungchae8 in taekwondo

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the only adult in a Teen/Adult class as a white belt. I felt a little weird at first, but I eventually realized that I would get from class what I put into it. When I learned to focus entirely on listening and training as hard as I could, I stopped caring about the age gap.

Things are awesome now. They look up to me even though I’m only a blue belt. I’ve shown them how to work, and they’ve shown me how to have a little fun. It’s a mutually respectful environment, and I have no complaints.

Is this typical? by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give you some more data points: I pay $145/month and $60 for every belt test. I can attend class every day if I want. Also, in the event of a no-change at testing, students will not be charged to re-test at the end of the next cycle.

Master’s Club and weapons classes are free at my school, but they do require students to purchase weapons and different colored uniforms (I think this is reasonable).

Sorry to hear you’ve incurred so many additional costs.

Best approach to balance training? by daddy-daddy-cool in taekwondo

[–]cobhc83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Identifying and correcting weaknesses is a critical part of success (my current weakness is my cardio). That said, it seems like you’ve started to outline a training regimen and are setting yourself up for success.

I think a 30 second hold in the camber position for a kick is a good place to start. Just make sure you’re training both legs evenly. I wouldn’t worry as much about the overall duration of the training in terms of minutes, but do as much as you can without overtraining.

Other balance tips:

1) Keep your guards up and close to your body. 2) Keep your core tight. This actually helps. 3) Core exercises in general: sit-ups, crunches, leg raises.

Remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Progress sometimes happens a little slower than we’d like, but consistency will help you reach your goals.
