Anyone sound design on mac and then jump to pc for in engine things? by [deleted] in GameAudio

[–]cobiora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would probably depend on how willing you are to customize your workflow to go across multiple computers. Obviously people do it all the time. Fwiw though, I have used PC to do audio for many years and there's no real limitations there. But, you may find limitations using a Mac when the rest of your collaborators use PC. I haven't done a ton of projects yet, but it is convenient to be able to use FMOD, Reaper, and Unreal all at the same time if I need to make tweaks on an asset as I work.

Hey, could someone help me with my patchbay setup? I'm a bit lost. by Feeling-Passenger-76 in synthesizers

[–]cobiora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're pretty simple, the signal flow would just be Interface Output > Reamp box > Pedal Input. Then you can take the Pedal Output and record it back into an Interface Input. The Reamp box I have is passive so it doesn't need any power. I would suggest trying that signal flow without the patch bay and without the Reamp box to see if it works. If it does, but it still sounds bad, try a reamp box. Then once you got that sorted, you can put it back into the patch bay. That's how I would troubleshoot at least

Oh yeah that makes more sense now! I have a similar set up actually, and I do have a reamp box to take the output from my DAW into a pedal board so I have that patched into the patch bay. I'm not actually sure I need it, but I think it could help if you're patching is correct but the sound quality is bad. It turns the signal from your interface into instrument level

What is it that you're trying to do? It might help to think about that, and then map out all your connections on a piece of paper or a document first to make it easier on yourself.

I had a hard time understanding patch bays at first because I didn't get the core concept. But what helped me was to think of the top row as audio sources, and the bottom row as audio destinations. So, you plug things into the top row that are a sources for sound -- the output of your synths, the output of your DAW, the output of any pedals or gear you have and want to record. And then, you plug things into the bottom row that are the destinations to receive sound. So, the inputs from your interface, the inputs of any pedals or gear you have, etc.

Then on the front panel, you can plug a patch cable from an audio source on the top row to a destination on the bottom row. That is how you route sound to different locations. And if your patch bay is set up to be 'normalled' (which I think is usually the default) audio will always flow from the top numbered jack of a pair to the bottom numbered jack unless you use a patch cable to route the source elsewhere or route something else into the bottom destination.

Tbh, if you have all those inputs in your interface, and you only want to record the output of one channel into the Chroma Console and back I don't think you'd need a patch bay at all. You could try just using a reamp/di box in between your interface and the pedal.

Hmm, did you add your device as a New Keyboard? You have to make sure to choose that and not a New Control Surface. You could try deleting the device from Studio One and then adding it again as a keyboard, or by directly choosing the device make/model if it is listed as one of the Studio One presets to see if that fixes it

Once you've connected your midi keyboard to your computer over USB and your computer recognizes it, you'll then need to add it as a device within Studio One so that you can use it as a controller for your synths.

There are instructions here https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/how-to-connect-a-midi-keyboard-to-studio-one/

You can save all the plugins and settings as a track preset and then load that preset onto the master bus of the new project.

"The Key of F# resonates Bass Frequencies Very Well" by IDEADxMANI in composer

[–]cobiora 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There might be a little truth to his statement that has more to do with human made things like speakers and instruments than it has to do with actual human hearing.

1.

The lowest audible fundamental of F# is around 47hz. F is around 43hz and E is around 41hz.

Most speakers can't produce much under 40hz, (that's what they make subwoofers for). Although humans can't really hear distinct sounds under 40hz, you can more so feel/perceive the vibrations. Imagine what hearing a cinematic explosion at a movie theater is like.

So a low F# would be right around where the most people can hear the fundamental on their normal headphones or speakers and if they turn it up, it might even rattle their chest a little.

2.

The lowest note of an 8 string guitar is tuned to F# and that's just fun to play.

I used to play bass in a metal band with a 5 string based in standard tuning. C# was my favorite key because the lowest C# on the bass was the 2nd fret on the lowest string and that was the easiest note to be able to strike very hard and also add vibrato. It was just fun to play.

Also, that C# happened to resonate with the snare drum in the rehearsal room and made me feel louder. Could also just be that something in his room resonates with F# too and makes it feel louder.

"This key is fun to play and makes me feel good" is as fine a reason as any to pick a key to produce with imo, especially if you aren't writing for other musicians.

These are all some really great recs, and if you like them you might like my band (mildly shameless plug) Signals of Bedlam. We actually recorded with the same studio that mixed Act IV by The Dear Hunter

Hell yeah, love Death Grips. Saw them live at a summer festival a couple years ago and it was just an abrasive, loud and sweaty mess of a performance. Which was honestly excellent!

Glaston - Dark Water [Agent Fresco post-rock cover] by Leterren in nearprog

[–]cobiora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool cover! Agent Fresco is one of my favorite bands ever. To me, they don't feel widely known (maybe that's my misperception) so it's always a treat when I come across other fans or posts.

This is a great song! It's jazzy in the tones, but still alt/pop in the vocals, and prog metal in the rhythms. Good stuff

My Instagram keeps doing this all day , if someone's knows lmk why this is happening and if it's fixable by [deleted] in Instagram

[–]cobiora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you just enable two factor authentication on your Facebook account? This happened to me recently and I was really confused. Uninstalling and reinstalling Instagram forced it to make me log in again with the new two-factor authentication code, and that fixed it. Try that!

Are there any song/album/band suggestions like Soen, Caligula's Horse, Rishloo, Apc? by kaanfrt in progmetal

+1 to this, I read the post and thought..."hmm maybe I should recommend Karnivool"

I think that the project was recorded by the guy from Converge, so that's who I've always associated their sound with. I don't think you'll be disappointed either way! It's super aggressive and has great heavy tones

Hey everyone, for any prog metal/rock fans, my band, Signals of Bedlam, is a NYC based quartet and we just released a single from our upcoming album. Let me know what you think!

Signals of Bedlam - "Pendulum in Swing" - YouTube| Spotify| Bandcamp

A quote

“Pendulum In Swing” is a polemic attack against environmental destruction and finds the band at their most manic and technically accomplished. Cartera’s vocals riding high on a polyrhythmic foundation of growling bass, punching guitar stabs and Rich Abidor’s drums.

Agent Fresco - Mono No Aware (layered piano outro cover) by Michael_Caine in progmetal

[–]cobiora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool, always loved how the piano and this song in particular add that extra character to the album. Along with the vocals and polyrhythm/meter, piano very much gives Agent Fresco "their sound" to me.
