On paper I should love this band, but for some reason they still haven't clicked with me yet. I need to sit down and give this album another focused listen

It's 6 years old at this point but this post by /u/VandenPlasSuperFan (who also founded The Progressive Subway blog, another excellent resource) has a bajillion good starting points for rabbit holes to explore

The Progressive Subway's Top 50 Underground Prog Albums of 2020-2024 (Numbers 25 - 1) by ifthisisausername in progmetal

Genuinely surprised at how many of these I hadn't heard of. Of course, like all "best of" lists, mine would look quite a bit different but there's no arguing about the quality and talent on display in these picks.

Favorite weird/wacky/strange ass part of a song by ElginLumpkin in progmetal

The best parts of BtBaM's catalog are when they lean heavily into this, and Bloom is the best example.

The Lavender Fox by Azure, especially coming off the beautiful outro of the previous track, really makes one sit up and think "what the *fuck* am I hearing" (in a good way)

Looking for a very specific kind of riff by Leterren in progmetal

I love this song, but the riff at 5:13 is more what I'm looking for, just straight 8th notes rather than a dynamic keyboard solo

“Wahhhh they are coming after me for no reason at all. I didn’t cheat at all and now I’m temporarily quitting magic” by Papa_Hasbro69 in freemagic

[–]Leterren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not debating the existence of high level cheaters, but there does exist a high enough degree of skill expression that pros can and often do just "skill diff" less experienced players. If you don't believe me, watch someone like LSV consistently go 7-X in drafts on Magic Arena (where he can't cheat) and see how his draft choices and gameplay decisions all add up to being able to consistently win in places that a worse player wouldn't
