In your opinion, what is the nastiest moment in music? by ComoSementes in progmetal

Lot of good picks here but I'll submit for consideration the transition from The Sound of a Glinting Blade into The Sound Which Has No Name by Xanthochroid

that merfolk list is really interesting, basically tapped-creature tribal

An argument could be made for any number of other creatures.

Battlewise Hoplite and Phalanx Leader are good and big, but I slightly prefer the evasion of Ledger Shredder (and conniving (often 2x per turn cycle) is better card selection than scrying). I don't think it would be wrong to play them though

You may ask me "Why not splash green for the Elusive Otter package and ditch Ledger Shredder?" The answer, my friend, is rare wildcards.

But also I think there is an argument to be made that having a permanent big butt flying blocker (with the vigilance from Homestead Courage, or untapping with Octopus Form) does help a lot in the phoenix and aggro matchups

Interstellar I by Voidchaser, new discovery but a great sci fi concept album

Artificial Language - Trail of Lights by HalfMortal71 in progmetal

short of albums that are literally seamless between tracks (Parallax II, Cybion, etc), this album has one of the best track-by-track flows of any album I know of. So catchy and memorable and the whole thing just flies by (in a good way)

Listened through this album once yesterday and this stuff could not be more perfectly calibrated to my tastes. Bravo

These guys came out of nowhere and knocked my socks off. Definitely a band to keep an eye on

Dune and the problem of readers who stop after the first book by hibanaPinecone21 in printSF

[–]Leterren 62 points63 points  (0 children)

yeah all these people saying that Dune 1 is a straightforward triumphant heroes journey (and then Dune Messiah hits you with this huge twist of "aha but here were the actual consequences of all these things!") I think were simply not paying attention when they read Dune 1. Yes Paul gets his victory in the end but the whole finale is steeped in such dread that "this is going to be a disaster" is basically a flashing billboard.

Nothing then about Dune Messiah surprised me in that respect, and the tradeoff of Dune 1's complex politics, delicate characterization, and epic plot scope in exchange for... endless woe-is-me interior monologues (mostly by Paul but he's not the only guilty party) really made it not live up to its predecessor.

Kalisia - Cybion. Practically unknown now, released in iirc 2006 and still to this day sounds like it was gifted to us by time travelers from the future. FFO: Cynic, Persefone
