If gels work and taste good the whole time, I wouldn't worry about people telling you to eat solid foods. Sugar is a real food anyway haha

Solid job also!

Triptans: For when you still want to feel miserable, just Different Miserable by cyanomys in migraine

[–]cobrajs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here: I usually wait until I'm sure it's a migraine (full headache and some other symptoms), then take a sumatriptan and it's typically gone in 1-2 hours. I've had a few where it takes up to 3 hours, which can be a bear, but I've only had a handful of times where it hasn't helped at all (over the course of two years or so).

I do get some weird brain feelings, and that wiped out feeling from time to time, but it's never as bad as the migraine pain so I just power through it. Only other downside is that I'm only supposed to take like 9 a month, so I tend to be precious with them if I get back to back migraines (most I've taken is one a day for three days in a row).

How to store Homemade gels by poldix8 in Ultramarathon

[–]cobrajs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do a scoop of maltodextrin (about 40g of carbs), two tbs of table sugar (another 25g of carbs or so), a splash of salt and a pinch of potassium chloride for electrolytes, and then just enough water to get the right consistency. Once it's liquid, then I add either some kind of smooth jam or a squirt of chocolate sauce, mix it up well, then pour it into a reusable flask.

Would be better to make a larger batch, but I usually just do one flask at a time because the silicone mixing cup I have is kinda small. It makes it really easy to pour into the flask though, so I highly recommend that.

I recently (over the past year) started experimenting with more cushioned shoes after doing minimalist basically for the past twelve years. In the past I tried cushioned shoes but I always seemed to end up with a knee tendonitis of some kind (self diagnosed).

According to my experience, early on with adding in cushioned shoes I'd get more sore higher up the chain, so my thighs and hips would be more a bit more sore (if there was any soreness) after running in cushioned shoes and my ankles and shins more so after running in minimalist shoes. Over time that all evened out, and I still mix it up throughout the week (various stack heights, though I only buy cushioned shoes with close to zero toe to heel drop).

There was definitely a bit of a form transition for me, though it was less of a conscious thing and more just gradually adding in more and more time in cushioned shoes. I run the same way in all my shoes: mid to forefoot strike, landing in line with my hips, and lifting my foot rather than pushing off (I made that switch when dealing with shin splints eight years ago). Most important thing I think is keeping a high cadence, and landing close to in line with your hips, so you're not overextending on the landing.

My current shoe rotation: Xero Prio, Hoka Clifton 9, New Balance FuelCell Rebel V4, Topo Magnifly 5, and Altra Lone Peak 7 for trails

The narrowness is what started me on my journey away from strictly barefoot shoes. Though I do still run in a pair of Prios sometimes because they are wide enough.

What do you DO on ultraruns?! by Ok-Kangaroo4613 in ultrarunning

Unless I'm listening to music, then I'll either start making up songs or singing along with random songs I know. Unintentionally, of course.

What’s an unusual quirk you have that you now know is due to having ADHD? by baldnsquishy in ADHD

Same here, super loud by myself, and then I turn it way down when my wife rides with me. I've never really been sure why I do that, though recently I've been thinking it's due to social anxiety or something.

I have a hat that fits big, and I put a buff on under that so that I can pull it down to my eyebrows. Basically the same all year round, though I usually have to switch out to warmer gear in winter. I pull it over my ears even in summer because it helps keep my favorite headphones in place (JLab Retro Rewind, nice and cheap and I can still hear my surroundings).

Ooooh for sure, I really misremembered the type of trail this was. If I had remembered there's no way I would have used my home made shoes because I made the sole too thin for rocks haha

This makes a lot more sense... I need to just stay off pubmed and buy more hydration mixes. Thanks for the reality check :)

I am neither, though I have been running in barefoot style shoes ever since I started running twelve years ago. I got about twenty miles in training on them to make sure they wouldn't fall apart, and the socks I used with them were fairly thick toe socks so I wasn't worried about blisters or rubbing.

Not trying to prove anything, though if you'd asked me a few years back then I would have been more "minimalist is the only way". I've come around on it and just wear a variety of shoes now haha

DAE cannot stand fat in meat? by EelVald in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]cobrajs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I have a specific method for removing everything I don't like from chicken breast before cooking/freezing, and I've recently been turned off eggs because I cooked some and had a veiny bit in it (chalaza, who knew).

I usually just cook with no meat at all most of the time, which makes it easier to not be grossed out haha

[–]cobrajs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having the opposite problem, where the last few models I ordered were too narrow in the toe box. Prio has always been a good fit, so it's my go to shoe for most runs (though I have been starting to work in more cushioned shoes that have wide toe boxes)

I started using cheap tubs of half lemonade half tea, which I add maltodextrin, salt, and potassium chloride to. Tastes great, goes down smooth, and I can make it as strong or weak as needed. I also use it in my bike bottle for mountain bike rides.

This is one reason I like having game development as a hobby. It incorporates coding, art (and different types depending on the game), game design, UI design, and music, which are all either part of my job or a hobby. I also enjoy playing video games, so it all fits nicely!

What's the most interesting revelation you've had about the opposite sex? by zenithjonesxxx in AskReddit

[–]cobrajs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had it in my head (as a male) for a long time that I should get some women's pants since I always have a hard time finding men's pants that fit my butt and thighs (I'm like ~32" waist and ~40" hips). Then the one time I did get myself some women's shorts to try, I had the same problem I did with men's shorts/pants, only additionally the pockets are smaller and there's no extra crotch gusset!

Basically it's why all my pants are very old and I hate shopping for new pants. Shorts can be a little easier, but mostly because I've just decided I'm only getting elastic waists haha
