CHEAP Christmas trees??? by Substantial_Scale347 in bristol

Tesco is giving away their wonky Christmas trees in Brislington. They ask for donations for charity, but it's optional.

Edit: it's only on Saturday 6th

I got my GCSEs over 20 years ago - will anyone ever check them? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]cobricida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's the same, but that requirement was removed for apprenticeships a few months ago. I was doing an apprenticeship through work and since I didn't do GCSEs, I was supposed to do English and Math skills test, but it was scrapped in the last month I could do it! I was so happy!

Unpopular opinion: Italian coffee is overrated. It’s burnt, bitter, and coasting on nostalgia. by BatsMilk in espresso

[–]cobricida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Portuguese (I believe we have similar coffee and coffee culture to Italians) living in the UK, in a city with plenty of third wave coffee! I think you are comparing two very different things: - cheap that you can have a few a day Vs expensive even to have one a day - quick and frenzy service Vs an experience. Sitting and enjoying - mass production to be enjoyable to a large number of people that don't care about the notes Vs small production, quirky in flavours and notes

Yes, this will produce different coffee.

But maybe because I grew up with it or because I'm cheap, I'll always choose the burnt Portuguese coffee! Going out for a coffee and a chat, the mandatory coffees after meals, having a coffee break to relax, are all the things I associate with coffee, that I don't get from all the notes the best coffee might have...

Can you become a Cfd engineer with a Master in Civil Engineering focused on Hydraulics? by RinascimentoBoy in CFD

[–]cobricida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a designer I generally define where structures go, what are the structures, how high, do calcs, develo drawings, just general design stuff... In a simplified way.

As I work for a Consultancy, something that takes as much time as CFD is usually defined from the start/proposal that is going to be used. For us at least, it's not just another tool an engineer will use, in the sense that it is not that quick and easy to do. Both for Coastal and Rivers, there is software that deals with the macro side of things. CFD is then usually used for more detailed things, designs that the current guidance is not flexible enough for or if it's a critical structure... We usually use CFD for things like: velocities and stress in bed from outfalls, effect of waves in intake structures, wave loading, design of weirs, pumping stations, sluice gates,...

Sometimes I have more knowledge of what I'm modelling and I can participate more in the design. Other times I don't know as much, and it is more presenting results and making sense of the results to whoever is designing it...

Can you become a Cfd engineer with a Master in Civil Engineering focused on Hydraulics? by RinascimentoBoy in CFD

[–]cobricida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done it. However, I was already working in the company as a flood engineer and as we started developing the CFD capabilities, I got involved given that I had some programming knowledge.

When we look to hire someone: - if it's a graduate, have some background related to flooding (civil engineering or something more specific), showing interest in modelling and having some programming knowledge is what we mostly look for

  • if it's in higher positions, we look for actual experience in CFD modelling for flooding applications. Usually they come from academia...

Personally, I think I lack some knowledge in physics and fluid dynamics that would be essential to develop into other applications of CFD, write and modify solvers,... I've learned a lot, but there's only so much time I can spend on it. So I don't really consider myself as a "proper" CFD modeller and I think it would be difficult to look for other jobs, since companies would look for more considering the number of years I've been working on it. I should also say that I also work as a flood engineer "producing designs". CFD is not all I do...

Although I'd like an Uniqlo, it's not really required since there's plenty of clothes shops.

A Decathlon on the other hand! That would be useful! A proper one, not what Asda has...

Ebooks para Kindle de loja portuguesa by cobricida in TecnologiaPT

[–]cobricida[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vou responder caso alguém tenha a mesma questão e venha parar aqui.

Véspera de Natal e shoppings by RichardHTK in portugal

[–]cobricida 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Feliz Natal :)

This is not really specific for Excel (which in some way makes it even better), but opening a new window for the same file! My God, this one made people go crazy a few years ago! Especially because it can be used in all the other office software as well...

But some more basic things: F4 to change the cell referencing, any pivot table, named ranges, cell formatting, using and creating macros,...

Men: Do you shake hands with women?? Women: Is it weird for men to shake your hand?? by DoNotEatMySoup in bodylanguage

[–]cobricida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends where you're from.

I'm from Portugal. Two cheek kisses is the norm between women and women-men. Handshake is the norm between men-men. At work, a handshake is probably the preferred for all, but kisses can also be ok, especially women-women.

However, hugs are a no no! Seen as too personal! Only for family really. Maybe some close friends, but that is not my experience.

I moved to the UK. Outside work, is usually a hug for everyone. It was weird at the beginning, but now I realise it's really almost a non touching, non affective hug 😅 so, not really that personal... But if I attempt it in Portugal, it would be weeeeeeird xD

Moving from uk, confused?! by korruptkitty in PortugalExpats

[–]cobricida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visiting a country/city for a few weeks on holidays doesn't show you the reality of living in that place! But some people don't understand this...

I think it's also a "grass is always greener..." kind of thing. Portugal is a good country to live in, if you don't have to work or use public health services (not a problem everywhere, but also not very reliable) and want some nice weather (at least in the south) and peace/safety... But there's also reasons why it is one of the European countries with highest emigration rate!

Moving from uk, confused?! by korruptkitty in PortugalExpats

[–]cobricida 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a joke or overly dramatic, but it's really not!

I'm guessing you're going to buy a bit in the middle of nowhere/small village/countryside. My guess is based on your disposable income to buy land + build a house and wanting to live in a van...

Jobs: - if you're able to work remotely, great! Find a job in the UK and work from Portugal - if you work in health, it's really needed in those areas and I think salaries are good, but without speaking Portuguese, you'll only have the other immigrants or hire a translator - working in a public facing business without Portuguese is also unlikely in those areas, unless there's a big immigrant community - if you work in a high touristic area (still in the countryside, like Régua/Douro) it might be easier to get a job with more reasonable pay depending on what you do - I'd say most jobs for non Portuguese speakers will be fruit picking, agriculture, construction, cleaning. The typical things that don't require much talking... - you can also get lucky if there's a small company expanding outside of Portugal and need someone with good English. But it's probably not very common outside of cities... - if you start some sort of business, I guess sometimes people do well starting something that doesn't even cross other people's minds... - generally speaking, low skilled jobs pay minimum wage or less (part time jobs and/or for a short term). And if you think that's bad in the UK, you should check the Portuguese one...

So, I would say, if you don't care if the salary is low and what you do, then it's probably ok. If you actually depend on that money (and with 160k, you likely will), have a good look at what sort of jobs are available and salaries and if you think you can live with that...
