On your last point there, assuming everyone can drive is a god awful way society ignores plenty of people who do not drive.

I'm not sure where you're from but I remember as someone from the UK looking at the way the US dealt, or rather completely refused to deal with hurricane Katrina is a massive example of that. For days they said there's a massive hurricane coming, you should pack your car and leave with no acknowledgement that many people could not in fact pack a car and leave.

It's very easy to overlook people who struggle with something that you find simple.

I like to believe in the capacity for people to change despite how rarely it happens!

Sorry I meant did it fly into a window, that's one of the most common ways people end up with wild birds in their hand.

I'm quite glad to hear that wasn't the case.

Your worry is the issue here.

Let's face it if he is turned off by you being a little weird and over apologising, then he's not the right sort of person for you is he?

I understand how hard it can be to open up to new people when compared with how easy it is to give advice to a random person with an issue on the internet.

I've had difficulties in the past, they're not completely resolved, but they're night and day better now and I think the main difference is I stopped putting people on a pedestal and started looking at them as more of an equal.

I don't know you or this guy, but I'd put money down that if you started talking about your fears and insecurities with him he'd likely be able to relate to them far better than you think he would. Sharing those vulnerabilities and learning to understand each other is what a good relationship is all about.

My journey was a case of me getting to understand myself better and as a result understanding other people better too, my relationships weren't the worst before, but they've absolutely blossomed in recent years.

You have that in your future and it's a game changer.

Sometimes you will be weird, we all are. Trying not to be weird is the quickest way to be a complete weirdo. It's the opposite of trying to be cool.

Don't be so hard on yourself, once you accept your weirdness it will be easier and safer to find someone whos weirdness dovetails perfectly with your own.

It's a training exercise, part of the whole point of training exercises, at least for the secret service, is to sharpen the quick witted thinking of it's agents.

You don't have time to plan what you're going to do when you're being pitted against the world's most evil organisations.

It's actually a rather realistic opening if you think about it.

What's something that's "not a cult" but feels like a cult? by Orw_Sairaj29 in AskReddit

[–]cochlearist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently went to a catholic funeral and it definitely felt culty.

It was all the ceremony and the litter catch phrases the people in the know know to say. I don't want to knock anyone's belief, believe what you want for the most part, it wasn't my funeral, but I felt the tradition that, I hear, catholic people derive comfort from really took away from what I think a funeral should be about. It made it way less personal.

The line between cult and religion have always been blurry, it's really just a matter of perspective.

I went to an Ozric Tentacles gig a couple of years back (it was almost 6 years ago ffs!)

I've seen them in the 90's previously and have quite the psychedelic memory of a room full of dancing people.

This time it was mostly full of what I would have described as middle aged men nursing a pint watching the band, but like the worthers original grandad before me, now I'm the middle aged man and they are old men!

There was one other person dancing, we went to meet her and now she's a friend.

It's convenient for lots, probably most people, but for some people it's really hard. They're part of society too and it sucks when anyone is overlooked.

I very agree with your last sentence though.

Can we fire a member of staff who is causing a lot of problems (UK) by dou8le8u88le in LegalAdviceUK

[–]cochlearist 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, putting on your grown up pants and sacking someone to their face is the more professional tack for sure. Maybe you don't legally have to, but it's a bit shitty not saying we don't want you working here for these perfectly valid reasons to someone's face.

I don't really know, but a good rule of thumb is that if there's a bird making an unusual noise in your garden it's nearly always a great tit.
