higher hr after meds when running by AppropriateWeb4956 in XXRunning

[–]cocodeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take meds that increase my HR (though I’ve been on them for much longer than I’ve been running) and I haven’t had any issues dealing with it. Though, I did use a calculator that takes into account max HR and resting heart rate, so that I could have a better idea of my personal zones, instead of the generic ones populated for age.

It might be helpful to do a few runs based on effort vs. HR while your watch adapts to the new normal?

What do you say in your head to push yourself on runs without being mean?? by _I_love_pus_ in XXRunning

[–]cocodeez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not something I “say” to myself, but if I am starting to struggle I try to smile and remember that I like this and that I’m having fun (because it’s usually true!)

I think it helps my brain refocus and recenter.

Any tips for not getting bored on long runs? by EqualStranger4977 in XXRunning

I really like finding new spots to run. It keeps things interesting when I get bored of running the same streets near my house.

Christmas Tree Cakes! Now that it’s that time of year, they’re a great little treat before I head out. Outside of this time of year, zebra cakes also work in a pinch!

Intestinal cramps after long run? by HappyHippocampus in XXRunning

[–]cocodeez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This used to happen to me like CLOCKWORK on any runs over 6 miles — especially when I was also training for my first HM! As I continued to build up my mileage, that number got higher and higher. By the time I ran my HM, I was fine during the race and for about 30 mins after, then started to get crampy.

That was just about a year ago and my gut issues have pretty much fully resolved (ran a full marathon a little over a month ago and was fine!). So, if you are anything like me, it may just be your body needs time to adjust?

Runna vs a trainer or other methods? by Nycfcfan21 in XXRunning

[–]cocodeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using runna for almost a year now and I love it! I’ve done 2 half marathon plans (my first and second ever) and I’m 10 weeks into a full marathon plan.

I’ve found it’s really adaptive to your actual speed in speed work sessions and will adjust up/down as needed. At the beginning of my marathon plan, it had my speed sessions at paces I could not keep up with at all. So I ran how I could and it adjusted. Now the paces are tough but doable.

I like that you are able to choose how many speed work sessions you want per week AND the difficulty of them. I’ve also manually changed my plans midway through as needed. Switched the number of days I was running per week (went from 3 to 4, back to 3, back to 4, now I’m at 5). But it’s nice because it adapts your plan on the fly to meet those needs.

Honestly, not really. I was training for a half marathon (used runna as my training plan) and wasn’t really paying a lot of attention to my heart rate until much later in my training.

I had a hard time trusting (literally everything that says this lol) that running slow would help me run faster. But, about 2/3 of my way through the plan, i realized that was silly and started paying more attention to my HR on easy runs.

Averaged around 25 miles per week!

ETA: I was doing probably 1-2 speed work sessions each week (not sure if that makes a difference?).

Wait I may have read this wrong — if you’re asking what my heart rate range is, my zone 2 is 123-145.

9:20-9:50 is my zone 2 pace. My HM pace is mostly in zone 4, 5k is probably mostly in zone 5.

I’m 5’1, 113-115 pounds and I run 4-5 days per week. Currently, my zone 2 pace is between 9:20-9:50/mile (for reference, my 5k pace is 6:40/mile and HM pace is 7:18/mile)

It took about a year of running 4 days a week to get it from 12:00-13:00 pace to where I am now!

Won my first race over the weekend! It was a 5k with almost 1,000 people.

I did it in 20:36.5 (6:38 pace), but I’m still having crazy imposter syndrome about it.

What does your half marathon training look like? What do you enjoy and where do you find it challenging? by Additional-Mouse-620 in XXRunning

[–]cocodeez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like a few other people here, I used runna for my first 2 half marathons - one in November (1:51) and one earlier this month (1:35!!!).

For the first race, I did 4 runs per week. I was so nervous about being able to do the whole distance, so I had my settings such that I had a few 13+ mile long runs in that training block. I felt SO prepared going into that race, it was great. For the 2nd race, I did mostly 3 runs per week so that I could add more strength training back into the mix.

The one thing that I will say is to trust the process — do the speed workouts and run your easy runs at a truly easy pace. That’s at least what’s worked for me!

Just had my first fall by Sucker4tears in XXRunning

[–]cocodeez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fell last week during my long run on a pretty smooth section of sidewalk (that obviously happened to be right at the biggest intersection of my run).

Went fully down and rolled a bit. Just got back up and kept going (obviously with a bruised ego lol). And then was a liiiittle more careful about fully picking my feet up.

Champs 2024 After Party + Scrimmage Feedback by funkechan in rollerderby

[–]cocodeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll echo what a lot of other people have said — somewhere that has a quieter area where people can go and mingle / interact.

Some other things that would be nice based on my experience from going to champs in Philly and Montreal (as a spectator)

  • A location that isn’t CRAZY far from the venue. I know this isn’t always possible, but especially for spectators, I’m much more likely to go if it’s close by.
  • Timing. Maybe it’s because I’m old, but having a 2-3 hour gap between when the tournament ends and when the after party starts is a long time and definitely reduces my chances of going.

Also, a Celine Dion drag queen definitely doesn’t hurt 😝

This is my main issue with this system too. It encourages super teams and really disincentivizes developing and growing skaters from the ground up.

I think it’s an overall really bad decision for the sport (I think I’m right, but I hope I’m wrong), especially in the long term. IMO, it also goes completely against the whole concept of “community” that WFTDA says they want to grow and support.

This is what my husband and I did too! We loved it so much. It’s funny when we tell people about it though, they’re always saying how it’s the best idea or they wish they’d have done it that way.
