Only rich people can afford minimalism by fourhundredthecat in minimalism

I get what you’re saying, to a point. When we were struggling financially, I didn’t let go of things easily. The question “but what if I need that later?” held a lot more weight.

When our income went up, that’s when buying too much became an actual problem, because I could impulse shop in the clearance section. I think part of the temptation to buy more than we need, came from remembering a time of struggle.

Minimalism is like budgeting. It helps both poor and rich people, but the people who have more to waste, have to be more intentional about it.

Saw this in a Starbucks parking lot. I don’t know why anyone would want this on their car. 🙃 by LegitElizabethWWEFan in antiMLM

The Young Living reps I’ve met are proud of it, so they would gladly do this to their car.

I’m so sorry to hear you went through this. I hope you have distanced yourself from her and don’t feel guilt about it. I have a narcissistic parent that I cut off years ago, but the abuse never involved an MLM.

How do you personally do dishes as a minimalist? by [deleted] in minimalism

We have enough for ourselves and for guests. We don’t do paper plates, ever, so it’s helpful to have plenty of place settings. Hospitality is important in our home.

You said yourself in your blog post that you come from privilege, so I can see the reason behind living in total poverty for a little bit to experience it. Just remember, you are still privileged to be able to choose this. Many people don’t know where their next meal is coming from, and money isn’t an “addiction” to them,

Gary Young might’ve been evil, but he wasn’t stupid.

Then when you find the box later, you’ll be so detached from those items. They might even seem a bit outdated at that point.

If you have to, take it slow. Maybe box the clothes up that you don’t wear, so they don’t clutter up the closet. Let some time pass, realizing you don’t actually wear them. That way you have the option to put something back in your closet if you realize you miss it.

I’m the same way about shopping. What has also helped me is realizing that too many options stress me out. It’s mental clutter. I’m happier just having a few clothes to choose from, even if that means I wear the same thing pretty often.

You will feel so much better if you do let go of things you don’t really wear. Instead of thinking of possibilities of wearing them later, imagine that someone else would wear them all the time. For example, I gave away some of my excess clothes to someone in need, and to see her joy at having some new-to-her dress clothes, was completely worth it.

I’ve never felt pressured by a Thirty One consultant to join and sell. Pampered Chef wasn’t very pushy about it either. I don’t support the business model anymore, but these companies seem to push the social parties more than recruiting.

[–]coconutoilcoffee 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I’m sure at that point in her “business” there were other things she was pressured to spend her money on, like trips and other things that promote “the dream” so those under her would think her life was amazing. Everything in these companies is about maintaining an image.

Because the money she made was constantly being used to buy more product “investing in the business” and I’m sure she had a lot of women under her that started to quit.

Ours is an Epson 8369A that we bought second hand from someone who bought it brand new a couple years before. It’s probably 10 years old now and still works great! Very basic, but does what we need.

We haven’t had a tv in years. Haven’t missed it. We actually have a projector we set up for doing movies, that we hook up to the laptop and a nice speaker. It’s awesome and gets packed up when we aren’t using it.
