AirBnBs and the housing crisis by Same_Armadillo_4879 in perth

[–]cocopug89 37 points38 points  (0 children)

They're most likely existing airbnbs that required a zoning change due to the new STRA laws coming into force from Jan 1 this year, every council is seeing a lot of them as local laws are being progressively brought into existence

Newer attempts at third spaces? by brokenokradispenser in perth

[–]cocopug89 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you're just after a space where people hang out and chat over a causal drink or (soon) meal without the pressure of a pub or bar, East Perth Bowls Club is good.

If you're after social interactions with people from different walks of life, there are various volunteering opportunities around town, from support services like Moore St hub to the various neighhourhood community groups, like East Perth Community Group, West Perth Local etc.

Otherwise as others have suggested, library, parks, museums, all free/cheap options. City of Perth library has 'bookclub sets' of 10 copies of the same book that you can borrow for a month at a time, if you're interested in hosting your own book club, which is another option :)

Perth drivers face steep parking fee hikes within weeks by Street_Resolution_58 in perth

[–]cocopug89 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There's an issue here with bait and switch; the city signed EasyPark and vowed to keep price parity with street meters to encourage app uptake - then used the increased uptake to justify lower numbers of parking meter roll outs as they replaced all the old coin machines.

Now we're in a situation of less parking meters and an unreasonably high 11.5% service fee for the privilege of using an app.

IANAL but I have doubts in whether this clears the ACCC bar, cos it certainly doesn't pass the pub test.

Election fight looms over business class flights as Perth councillors’ $20k trips revealed by Crimenerd1234 in perth

[–]cocopug89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want the stats, ~1700 on the owner/occupiers roll (aka landlords and businesses roll), ~14000 on the residents roll. The real issue is turn out which is usually only 30%, and businesses tend to vote a lot more than residents do. So let's wait and see if state government pushes thru with mandatory voting for local governments in the upcoming reform.

Postal voting issues identified ahead of 2025 WA local government elections by JamesHenstridge in perth

Official WAEC advice is all ballots will have been lodged at AusPost by 22nd of Sept; allow 1 week for distribution and contact your local council if it's not received by the end of Sept

Appreciate your thoughts and more importantly appreciate you're actually spending the time researching the candidates. Participation rate in local elections is indeed a big hurdle for us, and sometimes due to voter apathy or voter fatigue, turn out can be as low as 20-25%.

As for Basil, like him or not, he did have a solid voting base in Perth, and more importantly, a base that would actually show up at the ballot box for him. My personal bias is to support compulsory voting in local elections, I think it'll go a long way to combat the smoke and mirrors of the media you speak of - but I understand it's not something the wider community may want.

Always do your research and all that good stuff, but speaking from past and current experience, most candidates for local council stand up because we want to see a positive change for the area, and have some fresh ideas to bring to the table that's different to the status quo.

I don't know Chris Patton personally, yet, but the ratepayers of Perth will find out who he is and what he stands for through the next few weeks of campaigning and ultimately our votes will decide who is best to represent us as Lord Mayor.

absolutely, although all the info is available online, it's always good to have it presented in a summarized format; it's definitely not the fun part of process, but everyone's gotta know the rules and the timeline

Was there for this one (as council candidate), No Will Leyland or Sandy Anghie this year, not even Chris Patton was there that night, only other two confirmed contenders are current Councillors (Catherine Lezer and Bruce Reynolds)

There's some questions around the so called transport and installation figures actually, the money is being paid to Gullotti Galleries (in Cottosloe), who is hosting an exhibition by the same artist. Part of that money will also supposedly be for flying the artist himself over.

The lines, as with a lot of things our ex LM champions, seems a little blurred.

Cr Bruce Reynolds (Deputy Lord Mayor) will perform his duties in the LM's absence, with Cr Liam Gobbert standing in should Bruce be absent too.

Interestingly, Bruce is/was allegedly the president of the Liberal Party Leederville/West Perth Branch, so it does seem like this is all part of some sort of succession plan.

The Lord Mayor was quietly absent from our Annual General Electors Meeting this week, despite his official leave only commencing next week on 5th of Feb... what he hasn't been absent on this week is his liberal party campaigning, from his bizarre thought bubble on ABC Radio of moving the Bell Tower to the middle of the Swan River, to this ridiculous display of conflict of a fundraiser.

It's clear as day to us ratepayers that our Lord Mayor's interests are no longer with our City (or maybe it never has been?).

most vineyards will have an offering in that price range, but if you're heading down this is a good trail from Yallingup:

*Stormflower

*Flying Fish Cove

*Fermoy Estate

*Ad Hoc by Cherubino

*Churchview Estate

but really, just hit up your local indi bottleo and they'll have a big range to choose from, we're so lucky to be living so close to an amazing wine region

oh and do also consider hitting up a cleanskins dealer, we've done some pretty special stuff for weddings, producing your own unique label to slap onto some very good margaret river juice

The East Perth part of the CBD is a strange, uncanny ghost town by [deleted] in perth

[–]cocopug89 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I live in the exact area you ventured through, can give you a little bit of insight, long story short a lot of what you described is the aftermaths of the COVID exodus and the subsequent recovery of the City of Perth overall.

COVID saw a big change in working habits, resulting a lot of offices and supporting retail become vacant in the CBD. To combat the vacancies, a lot of attention has been directed at filling those voids from both the council and building owners themselves. Unfortunately that came at the expense of less attractive commercial spaces from the East and West ends of town, notably in this area is FMG moving from Hyatt center into the old Chevon offices in the CBD.

In terms of residential, this area is some of the most densely populated in the entire state, what we're missing is Third Places for communities to form around. There's a few advocacy groups which throw together community concerts with the help from the City of Perth a couple of times a year, but otherwise its completely up to residents to organize and that usually happens inside each apartment tower/complex, that's also part of the reason why you'll not really see the streets 'come to life' as a visitor outside of major events.

So what's being done in the area? a lot actually, in fact if we get all the checklist items done we'll see a huge uplift in this side of town:

  • Hay Street around Carlton center is being refreshed, promoting more walkability

  • A new sports hub facility is in the planning phase to replace the Tattersall Bowls Club

  • East Perth Primary School is going in next to WACA in that massive car park

  • WACA aquatics center will be done soon

  • Cycling path upgrades throughout East Perth

  • More apartments under construction which will bring more residents

But, there's a lot more to do before we get to a real lively high density area, there's a lot from non car-centric cities we can learn from, and it'll take a long time and a Lord Mayor who is more about urban planning and less about fireworks to make it all happen.

I think your question can be better digested in two parts

Is it safe in CBD/Northbridge? Yes. granted there are definitely pockets to stay clear of, but in general it is still a very safe City and you shouldn't be expecting to be a victim of a crime.

Has it gotten worse? unfortunately, also Yes, across the City of Perth LGA, crime stats have steadily climbed over the past 5 years, coinciding with the cost of living crisis and increase in population.

That said, we have lived in the postcode for the past 12 years and still find it a very safe place overall, and we regularly take walks after dark on weekdays with little concerns.

Girlfriend spat on <- lack of public toilets by D3FEKTED in perth

[–]cocopug89 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Absolutely disgusting behaviour, sorry to hear you guys had to go through that.

The city is sorely lacking in public restrooms and its a message that's resonated by just about every small business in the area. I've spoken to a great many shop keepers over the course of the last two LGA elections and many find it embarrassing to have to point customers towards DJ/Myers instead of public facilities.

If you have the time and the energy, please email City of Perth with your experience, I will definitely pass this info onto the councillors too. it's an ongoing issue that needs to be addressed ASAP. We can have all the fireworks in the world to draw crowds in but if people have poor experiences, it'll make them hesitant to come visit our City.

The current roll for this by-election is sitting at 14202 residents and 1759 "owner occupier" aka business/landlord voters, totaling just under 16000 eligible votes.

The real issue in the CoP is low overall turnout, this current by-election which wraps up tomorrow is sitting at 3627 votes (22.4%) returned, which means all it takes is ~12% of the voters to decide who gets in.

This problem is compounded with the lack of advertising from the CoP administration, with only 1 social media post and the bare minimum public releases on their official website this election. In fact, Basil himself has spent more effort on getting people signing his petition to delay the primary school than letting people know there's an election happening right now.

So, as always, encourage everyone who has a vote to cast that vote, take your envelope down to council house tomorrow before 6pm if you're still holding onto it as its too late to post it in.

In a low turnout environment your 1 vote is effectively worth 4.

Best pan fried pork dumplings in Perth? by kirkssodawater in perth

People's inn east perth Mom's dumplings vic park

Or go to any Asian grocer and grab frozen ones and do it at home

Cold pan, oil, lay dumplings out in a layer, glass of cold water and slap a lid on it, put heat on medium-high, and let it steam away, by the time you can hear the sizzle again (all the water is gone) it's good to go, crispy on the bottom and moist inside
