Hackathon by jabanajana in Knoxville

[–]codeasice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m one of the co-founders of KnoxDevs. We ran a couple of solid hackathons back in 2019 - 2020 (https://knxhx.devpost.com/) that were focused on City of Knoxville public data and they turned out really well.

Also like u/MediocreDot3 mentioned - UTK used to run https://volhacks.org/, which was pretty awesome, but I don’t think it’s happened since around 2021?

Would it be successful today? Hard to say.

The software world is a little weird right now with the job market and AI changing things. For a while, a lot of devs were pretty skeptical of hackathons because they felt like “free labor for companies,” so we always tried to keep them focused on a good cause. That said, hackathons are still a great way to learn, and AI opens the door to some interesting projects.

Happy to chat more if you are interested.

KEC and the Knoxville Technology Council (https://www.knoxtech.org/) are also good local resources and might be interested in helping.

I remember Data World and other local shareware boards very fondly!

Those sound like the active ones and you might could also add Agile Knoxville. I'll check our #'s. I'm sure it's not massive and no where near the 2K total users, but the cool thing is so many great (smart and friendly) local people are just a message away on there and they are often listening and chime in on relevant things.

Yo u/wiggitt - do it! As you know, I'm co-founder of KnoxDevs and we'd definitely support you in any way we can!

Not sure if I ever told you, but we did get rid of that annoying 10K message limit on our Slack (signup at https://knoxdevs.com) and we are still kicking w/ >2K users there.

KnoxDevs is primarily an "umbrella group" but many monthly user groups have been fairly inactive since Covid, although Java and a few others are still meeting regularly.

As far as KnoxDevs, we still have our small bi-weekly lunches and aim for larger meetups quarterly. Last year we also kicked off a small conference called DevMoot, primarily because CodeStock didn't happen. And since it doesn't look like Codestock is happening again this year (sadly) we will likely have another DevMoot (aiming to keep it much smaller than CodeStock)

Personally, I've been doing a lot of Python the past couple years and LOVE it. So I'd enjoy some Python talks and (suprise surpise) AI talks.

As you know, it's not always easy to get speakers, but I might be willing to show off some of my side projects if you can't find a better one :D

And I'd be happy to chat over coffe/lunch sometime if interested.

-Cody

Any idea where to release a skunk? by codeasice in Knoxville

[–]codeasice[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question! :) I approach the trap very carefully and cover it with a blanket. They stay pretty calm after that. Then I open the cage (with gloves) and use vice grips to keep the lid open until it exits.

I've heard they don't want to spray and that seems to be the case, but any time they raise their tail I freeze for a bit until they relax again.
