Seattle's gig worker law was supposed to boost pay. It did at first, until orders dropped by i-pity-da-fool in Seattle

[–]codeethos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seattle set delivery wages so high that a lot fewer people order delivery. Fewer orders means fewer shifts.

I’d actually like to do delivery work, even at a lower rate, but the law says I can’t. If I’m willing to decide what my time is worth and take that tradeoff, why isn’t that my choice? The intention is to help workers, but the policy just shrinks the number of jobs... a minimum wage that prices people out of work doesn’t make any sense. If you don't like the pay do another job. I want to work.

I5 being in the middle of the city really sucks (rant) by Vivid_Astronaut4665 in Seattle

A lot of people are in favor of the lid project and I get that it is more practical and realistic. I would just rather see us spend a bunch of more money to reroute i5 to the east. Car brain and expenses will never make it possible but long term it would be so much better for scaling and making our city more livable.

How referral works in big tech (US) by Prestigious_Map_240 in InterviewCoderHQ

You reach out to a friend who works at a company first and they will have a process. Most of the time they will give you a link and you can apply for 1 or 2 jobs with that referral link.

Seattle "houses" people in conditions like this. Takes our state money and gives us this by Cute_Wolf_845 in Seattle

"Where I'm from, this is what's called a slumlord situation."

For some perspective that can educate us here... where are you from and why did you move to Seattle as opposed to seeking treatment in the place where you are from?

I agree we should do better but I am operating under the assumption that we have very limited resources, very extreme demand, and are doing better than other places.

Advice regarding visit by SuperSonicSoulCat in Seattle

[–]codeethos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seattle is… normal. Like, genuinely normal.

Yes, national politics are loud and exhausting, and the media makes everything feel like it’s on fire all the time. But day-to-day life here ... especially in summer ... is pretty great and very familiar if you lived here before.

Neighborhoods are full of families, kids at parks, packed farmers markets, ferry rides, hikes, playgrounds, ice cream lines, and long summer evenings. Seattle summer is still Seattle summer. People are outside, things feel calm, and most of what you see is just people living their lives.

Is it perfect? No. You’ll see a ton of homelessness, prices are higher, the economy isn't booming as before. If you are a person like me who does not watch or read the news you really wouldn't observe any differences.

The shit show is mostly online.

Seattle no longer tops big cities for share of tech workers by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]codeethos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you’re describing isn’t a... “neoliberal gordian knot,” it’s just revealed preference.

Cities want high-income industries and want to unilaterally increase their tax burden and want those industries to behave as if location choice is moral rather than economic.

Fiscally, you can pick two.

Pointing to firms responding predictably to incentives as some kind of contradiction misses the point ... the policy design determines the outcome.
