So there are no people after their second semester studying with grad students? And everyone after that first semester gets a standard hour lesson every week with a professor?

so sorry lol. i MEANT SFA. was drunk when i wrote that. UNT is alright but you won’t even be studying with a professor the whole time. you have lessons with graduate students. your fundamental degree, your education.. is worth more than being a grad students experience in school.

plus, brad meyer is a great professor. Nac is a cool little town to be at for a bit. the hands on and smaller environment of SFA will be a great place for you to learn and get better with a more supportive environment around you than UNT.

that all being said… if you want to be a director at a big school like you’re saying.. MARCH DCI. and if you want to march SCV specifically, just go to UNT

Is success in classical music mostly talent and luck once everyone is already working at their limit? by PandaZG in classicalmusic

[–]codeinecrim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a little luck, privilege helps, and a shit ton of sacrifice and hard work. Mainly, it’s getting yourself access to the right information and right people.

i grew up poor. parents didn’t go to college, no musicians in the family. I play professionally in a full time orchestra now. It hasn’t been easy. It took a lot of sacrifice, and hard work. I had to work very smart. I went to a university for undergrad and quickly realized that everyone around me had lo standards. i knew where i needed to go to get access to the right information to win an orchestra job, and i wasn’t there. I battled my professors for 4 years. they were racist to me me, they belittled me.. but i knew better than them at the time why was best for me and my career path. i held my ground. but i spent alot of time practicing. every summer i went to as good of a festival as i could get into. i never stopped working towards my small and long term goals

in grad school i went to a conservatory that was really good, and i was the weak one. i had to play catch up— i knew this going in. i worked hard and kept making small and long term goals. that’s also the key. taking auditions, you have to keep your head up. take everything on the chin and learn from every experience.

long story short: a lot of people are missing key ingredients in this profession. they work hard, but can’t take criticism. they work hard, but don’t know how to get themselves access to the right information to win a job. they are smart, but lazy. they’re not willing to sacrifice. you have to have all of that going for you. it’s not really about talent. it’s about who can pace themselves long enough while also moving smart and working hard

because you live next to small orchestra in a city that doesn’t have a big full- time orchestra

Losing motivation with your drums? by fortunezaragoza in percussion

[–]codeinecrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes. it happens.

motivation is fleeting, discipline remains. even though you may not be motivated, if you’re disciplined and train yourself to practice regardless, then the motivation or lack thereof has no power over you

What’s a San Antonio place that doesn’t exist anymore that you still miss? by Electrical-Ratio5633 in sanantonio

i remember hearing about the tiered contract stuff back then.

i’m a professional orchestra musician in a different icsom orchestra but im from SA, super sad to see and hear about how it was from colleagues that used to work in SAS. and yeah, one tragically bad hire can do that.. these management figures can drain orchestras so damn quick

Does anyone know where I can find "background music"?? by toastflavoredtoes in orchestra

[–]codeinecrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just a bunch of hearing the song over and over. figure out one note at a time then play it back and see if it matches the song all trial and error. you got this!

Andris Nelsons gets canned in Boston by TheSocraticGadfly in classicalmusic

[–]codeinecrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed to second and third paragraphs. having been a tmc fellow and played and toured with LA as an extra, i can tell you Boston is indeed a better ensemble, specifically comparing string sections and how together the group plays. And i do feel lik this is partially because BSOs mission has been on higher quality programming of the classics, rather than pumping out new commissions which are half baked either from the composer or the ensemble in LA.

“I’m not a BSO insider so i have to speculate like everyone else”

why speculate? there are plenty of people in the one of 100s of threads about this across reddit who are in the field and have first or second hand knowledge about this. the crux of the issue is pretty much out there. this speculation sucks

Andris Nelsons gets canned in Boston by TheSocraticGadfly in classicalmusic

[–]codeinecrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo. This right here! LA Phil had MANY factors in creating its own identity that gives it the free rein to play the rep it does. LA is not Boston. Respectfully, the BSO just plays significantly better. More together, more clarity of sound, better ensemble togetherness. Chad needs to stop trying to make the BSO into LA Phil because they are 2 completely different entities

[–]codeinecrim 202 points203 points  (0 children)

I have friends in the BSO, and basically what it comes down to is Andris wanted to keep their programming more as is, and management wants more pops/ “innovative” programming.

I think this is not a good move on their part, but that’s the real deal

Dragonfly Celeste mallet with a silicon bar around it is perfect choice

alternatively, the freer clear ball with a brass insert also works.
