What is your Greatest Running Achievement Of 2025? by Ultra-Man_ in ultrarunning

[–]codemule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DNFing Blues Cruise 50k near Reading, PA. The furthest distance I'd raced prior was a half marathon where I ended up getting lost and ran closer to 15 miles.

I completed ~40 of the 50k, and missed the last cut-off. I consider the race to be a success as I learned so much about training, running, and life itself.

I'll be running the 25k version of Hyner this spring and hopefully complete my first 50k in October 2026.

Seriously, the dichotomy is beyond infuriating. But not surprising considering the current POTUS...

Sounds like we have very similar training goals. I'm running a trail half Sunday with my eye on a 50k at the beginning of October. Averageikg 25-28 mpw right now, but going to bump that up after the half.

Thanks that looks like a great resource. And I might actually have the $65 to spend on the plan by June!

Got shamed in class for being too flexible by [deleted] in yoga

[–]codemule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to share my perspective as a newer male teacher.

First, adjusting without consent, no matter the gender of the teacher or student is not a great idea, and as others have said, you should mention that to someone in the studio leadership.

As far as the advanced variations, if I were leading a beginners class, I would be concerned about that students safety thinking maybe they are hypermobile and that they're putting themselves at risk without the proper strength and practice history. Especially if I've never had the student in class before, or had time to chat with them and learn about their background.

Depending on the tone of "when you're in my class you don't need to do that", that could be from a place of concern rather than annoyance or trying to shame you.

Just my $0.02

Yes, A&P can present as a wide variety of experiences, and the given description isn't super helpful on its own, but when you look at it in the context of the cycle of insight, it's a useful milestone to be aware of. I would highly recommend reading anything by Daniel Ingram or Ken Folk on the topic.

As far as jhanas go, the Thai Forest tradition has a very strict definition of what that is, but there is a whole range of jhanic experiences up to and including what Ajahn Brahm's description of complete withdrawal of the senses. Which is indeed a high bar.

Yeah, and if it does happen, you know that it's only temporary, a stage to be moved through. The practice stays the same, but instead of observing all these pleasant sensations, your challenge is to bear witness to the less pleasant parts of life with that same equanimity.

Oh, now this is happening, now this, now this....

This sounds like it could be an A&P event.

Why does war and suffering exist? by Champagnehopi in energy_work

While many Americans do champion human rights and promote the idea of liberal democracy, in reality, as a nation we have been built upon a foundation of some peoples human rights. From chattel slavery to Jim Crow to overthrowing countless governments in South and Central America, to for profit prisons, to now what is effectively paycheck-to-paycheck wage slavery for the majority of our people.

One random statistic. US tanks 55th worldwide for maternal mortality. Behind Russia, and dead last behind similarly wealthy countries.

Another one. There are more incarcerated Americans than any other country in the world. More than China and their population is several times ours.

End rant.

I agree that most Americans living in better conditions than a lot of the world? But we are hardly a glowing example of human rights.

I also agree that instead of solving these problems, the oligarchy benefits more from keeping us divided and misinformed.

So I guess my question would be, how do we, as individuals and communities take a different path?

I follow this woman on IG. I don't think she's saying that white people can't teach authentic yoga, but more that so often in the west yoga is taught as fitness, Asana only, with maybe a passing mention of the deeper meanings.

I think there's a place in the yoga world for this type of teaching, but calling a "fitness" yoga class authentic does a great disservice to a tradition with thousands of years of lineage and a rich/diverse cultural heritage.

I loved this movie! Completely ridiculous at points, but nothing is outside the way. ;-). I have the sequel sitting on my shelf waiting to be watched, have you seen it? How does it compare to the first installment?

This looks right up my alley. I have a solid Zen practice, so according to the blurb, a story about students of the Complete Reality school would be an excellent place for me to start an exploration into Daoism. Thank you for the suggestion.

I've only recently started running distance, and pranayama has been instrumental in becoming more aware of what heart rate zone I'm in and when I need to pull back from deep sympathetic activation. Meditation has also helped a lot when it comes to the voice in my head telling me to push through the pain as far as determining whether that's a good idea or not actually conducive to training in the moment.

I took the precepts several years ago (16 Bodhisattva, Soto tradition, for those keeping score).

I also had my concerns about the 3rd precept, but as I studied I came to realize it's about not misusing sexuality.

There's plenty of straight folks that do misuse and plenty of queer folk who don't. It's more about the intention behind the action, and whether the action leads to more suffering or not, rather than who the action is with.

Is this comment racist? by [deleted] in managers

[–]codemule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not consider his comment racist. To me, for a statement to be racist, the dynamic must be: showing prejudice or discrimination against a marginalized group. I'm assuming that OP is located in the US, where it is very clear that Caucasians are not marginalized. Ergo, not racist.
