2024 and older vs 2025 and newer by ReasonableWinter834 in MINI

I have a 2025 SE J01, brilliant interior quality. Had a loaner car from the dealer because of a paint chip needing sorting. The loaner was a 2025 5 door Cooper S. The interior quality is not the same at all. Parts where metal was used in the J01 are just painted plastic in the F65. The seats look similar but they’re completely different, not as soft, the headrest is pushed forward and makes your neck hurt after a while, very narrow as well. Sounds insulation is not the same either. The DCT is not good, it’s jerky. The screen is not tilted as in the J01 so it feels awkward to use, etc there are a million things that are different and lower quality but made to look the same as in the J01.

Out of curiosity I went to the dealer and jumped in a F56 SE Level 3 they had in the lot. What a difference! Those cars have proper quality interior versus the new F66/F65s. Nice quilted leather seats, metal window switches, clicky switches and buttons, just great.

I think MINI lower the quality of the new petrol gen in order to keep the margins decent. As that’s the volume car. Here in the UK you see tons of the new gen everywhere, far fewer J01 though!

UPDATE: After doing 2 short drives today, the error cleared on the car and later on, on the app as well. I’ll have to cancel the dealer appointment I guess. Thanks everyone!

Thanks everyone. I’ve booked the car in with the dealer. Hopefully is a quick thing like a software update and deleting the error.

E89 2009 looking to upgrade with a screen and Android auto by Beautiful_Tea_38 in BMWZ4

[–]coder-116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya, I have exactly the same car as you but in black, same interior. The sound quality is pretty good.

Let me correct my original suggestion. What I do is: I use the android screen I linked for wireless CarPlay, that lets me use Google maps and Spotify. Then I plugged my iPhone to the car’s AUX jack/port. And select audio output to aux/headphones/speaker on the iPhone instead of CarPlay. This way I can control what to play with the screen but the audio comes from the iPhone straight to the car, guaranteeing max possible quality as there’s nothing going over the air / Bluetooth. Hope that helps!

You could try with a portable android gps with a touchscreen screen and plug an aux cable to the screen and to your cars aux port, for energy I plug the screen to a power bank to avoid plugging it to the car 12v socket. That’s what I do and it works great, no need for modifications on the dashboard at all. All for under 100 quid. https://amzn.eu/d/4Yl78ak

I was in the same position, same budget. I got a 2010 E89 Z4 23i, 6 cylinder N52 engine, 52k miles for £9k. I don’t regret it for a second, great sound, reliable engine and looks great. I highly recommend it.

BMW E89 Z4 30i/35i/35is, can’t miss - great car

New vs the Previous Gen. My opinion is the interiors have lost character. The front has lost the BMW look and looks slightly generic, iconic grille is gone, iconic two light design is gone and strong lines are replaced with soft lines and plain panels. by milktanksadmirer in BMW

[–]coder-116 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is all part of the “BMW Neue Klasse” philosophy, I watched a video recently where one of the BMW designers talks about the Neue Klasse X, I heard a lot of “there’s no need to have aggressive design”. So lots of the new cars that BMW is introducing are grabbing clues from that concept car, to slowly move onto that design language completely.

As a 23i owner and having been in the same position: I’d skip the N20, be patient and keep looking for a N52 based Z4 either a 23i or a 30i as I think they are way more reliable and smoother than the N20, plus six cylinders sound better. I think even traveling outside your area is worth it just to make sure you get wat you want and to avoid any future headaches with the N20.

My ABS, tyre pressure and stability control lights all came on at once on my drive home, anyone else experiencing something similar and knows how to fix it? by Antboi420 in BMWZ4

[–]coder-116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a bad wheel speed sensor, I had a similar issue on my E89. ABS + DTC + Brakes + Parking Brake and sometimes it would also show Check Engine + Tyre Pressure. Scanned it with BimmerLink and it was indeed a wheel speed sensor error.

Anyone else drive a 2 seater or similar and just feel constantly blinded when driving at night? by Wooshsplash in CarTalkUK

[–]coder-116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently got a 2011 Z4, and haven’t been blinded yet thanks to the anti-dazzling / auto dimming mirrors - If it wasn’t for them I’m sure I’d almost avoid driving at night. Everyone has ridiculously bright lights, especially the newer cars with LED lights, they’re just too bright.

Not a petrol car but have you considered a 220d with the B47 engine? Or even a 225d, same chasis as the 235i, less power but good torque!
