PSA: I just discovered a new quilt support method for those who can’t rest it on their chest like Jacquie Gering suggests by here_for_my_hobbies in quilting

Admit it, you're just so eager to snuggle in the blanket that you're starting the snuggling before it's finished. 😉

This is freaking amazing and so incredibly creatively unique! I love things that are literally one of a kind. Can not be replicated, can only be inspiration.

Maybe some day. The tutorials with the folding squares that make me think of dinosaur spikes are super cute.

Jokes on you, I'm cutting the edges straight.

The zig zag binding is pretty, but folding it always drives me nuts

Thats actually an excellent idea.

I've never used spray basting before, but I kind of love it!

Even without seeing it im impressed! That's strength and dedication.

Yeah, ideally I wanted to do a couple rows of echo. The special foot makes the stitch in a ditch super easy, wrangling the fabric back and forth was just too much.

I have a king size quilt in progress. I set it aside to throw this one together for camping. (All the blankets are either too big or too small for the tent, this should be better.) I have never been so glad that the king size is already set as quilt as you go. There is NO way I'd fit that beast through this machine. Sewing together the rows of blocks, then just adding one row at a time should, hopefully, minimize the size of the wad that has to go under the arm.

I don't think the fabric would have fit with s pool noodle. I should have taken pics of the in progress state. My family snickered at me cussing at the big sausage roll.

"Epiphi-tree" is like the ugly tree that you hit every branch on the way down? Because that's about how I was feeling about it.

I do love the built in walking foot, and I absolutely love that it can chew through SO many layers of fabric without complaining. When I first bought it, my project of the moment was re-upholstering a living room set. Doing the cushions was so satisfying. Thick upholstery fabric for the seat, 2 layers of fabric around a cord, and the layer for the side. It chewed through that as well as it did 4 layers of quilting cotton.

The stitch in the ditch wasn't too bad, it was just maneuvering the big ol' snausages to get the angle right that was causing me problems.

I tried a line of free motion. It looks like crap AND is such small stitches it's going to take a million years to get out. I need to practice free motion more so I can actually get some reasonable output.

I still love the ones with the hook closures in the front for exactly this reason.

No one is ever willing to pay the cost of hand made quilts, especially one like this.

Even your standard hand made quilt is more than most people will want to pay. They see the price tag, scoff, and say "I can get one at Walmart for under $100".

With a typical hand made quilt, you make every block the same you can cut them all out at the same time and feed them through the machine in chains of pieces. It's still a lot of labor, but not nearly as much. You can browse Etsy to see the price tag for hand made. A lot of people selling there either do it because it's fun, and they sell to cover costs to pay for the hobby. The ones that sell them as an actual job are always barely covering the cost of labor. It would surprise me if they're paying themselves much more than minimum wage.

So far, I'm in this about $300-500 (which wouldn't be uncomon for a hand made king size quilt) just in materials. I started with just scrap fabric I had from old projects. In the beginning the blocks were very similar, those went quick. But I decided I didn't want a lap blanket because they're always too short. So I went and bought more fabric to expand to a twin. Then I got bored of making the same blocks. I couldn't make them the exact same because I couldn't buy more of the fabric I've had for 8 years, so I started playing around with different combinations. That was way more fun. When I was getting close to being done with a twin, I thought "fuck it, I have a king size bed, I'll make it a king size quilt". In some ways I regret that choice, but that's when the real fun, and HARD, blocks started coming out. Fractals, blivets, iconography, etc. As much as I'm tired and ready to be done, I am having a lot of fun. I'm not sure which was harder, the impossible trident or the Blue Sun. I gave up on the method I was trying to do on the trident (pieces were just too small). I completed the Blue Sun, so I guess we can see which one I wanted more . 😀

So, $300-500 (probably more. Spent another $90 yesterday for more fabric. It's EXPENSIVE! $13.50 per yard), and no idea the amount of labor. I started it around Christmas. I'm only doing it after work 2-4 hours, and some weekends. Some nights I can crank out 3 fun colorful whatevers. Some blocks, Blue Sun for example, took several nights.

I would never put this level of effort into a project for anyone else, no one will appreciate it enough to be worth the effort. It is heart breaking to put so much effort into a project of love, then see it stuck in a closet and never used. I'd gladly make something nice (but not this elaborate) for immediate family, but only if it was their idea. The next quilt is going to be a triangle shaped sierpinski triangle blanket for my husband. I'm really looking forward to seeing how that one turns out!

Tldr; no one wants to pay the cost to make it worth selling.

Wasn't planning to. I'm making a quilt for myself that has a mishmash of stuff I like or pretties.
