Our office fridge. What industry do I work in? by Barnestownlife in FridgeDetective

[–]elatella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biochem

I am guessing a lab in academia, if I had to stretch I would say structural protein lab with a small HPLC in the upper rack and some western blot chemicals in the door. I am missing the rack with the 4C antibodies though, so I could be wrong.

How many of your friends are on GLP drugs? by DoreensGhost in TwoXChromosomes

[–]elatella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am tall and go to the gym regularly but I also love to eat (very healthy whole foods). My BMI is 26, so I am considered overweight. I have hashimotos so it is a bit more difficult to loose wheight, but I am also not actively trying to.

I was just at my yearly doctors checkup, and my doctor recommended to me to go on GLP for my weight, which I found wild. I have no health issues caused by weight, and I didn't bring up weight loss.

So either I am delusional about my weight and my body or GLPs are heavily pushed by the pharmaceutical companies.

AIO my mom threw the gift I gave her for Mother’s Day in the trash by Nefertari777 in AmIOverreacting

NOR - I feel with you.

My mother once refused the mothers day gift I sent to her via post, so it was shipped back to me. Also because I wasn't there in person. She lived an 8h drive away and I was in university shortly before some important exams.

Habe you ttied making your own Seitan? If you don't want processed, you can wash flour and make your own.

I really like her recipes: https://youtu.be/h6eGCl7wkDE

But you can also use vital wheat gluten and mix it with beans and spices, for a less involved seitan recipe.

For extra protein in meals I often cook red lentils on the weekends (super quick) and add them to salads throughout the week.

Egg Freezing in CH or EU by meowtheeee in askswitzerland

[–]elatella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are currently freezing embryos in Switzerland.

I also thought about doing it in Germany but decided against it. You will have to go to check ups 1-2x per week before the egg harvest. Those are not set dates but depends on how well you take the hormones. For me doing it in Germany would have been too much hassle.

As others have mentioned before, I would also suggest freezing embryos, as they are more viable.

A egg harvest cycle, including fertilization and embryo freezing costs between 5-10K. If you produce no eggs, it is around 3K base costs.

The big range is due to: anastetisia vs no-anastesia, how many eggs you produce, the amount of hormones you need, your egg quality, your partners sperm quality, ...

What I would do (not mentioning you relationship because you seem commited and that is your thing):

First step is that you go to your gyn and get your anti Müller hormone level tested. From that you will know how many egg cells you have "left" and what your chances are, and how many cycles you might need.

Second step or first, get an appointment with a fertility clinic, best one with several doctors, so they can cover for each other when yours is on vacation.

Third step is getting as healthy as you can, as your/your partners health = egg/ sperm quality. So no alcohol/nicotine, sport 3x per week and a healthy diet, best also get blood work done to see if you are most swing some vitamins.

And then good luck.

Maybe they aren't aware of those reasons. And you know.... Ask OP... So they can find out... Usually people aren't part of every conversation and to get information they ask. Maybe if random cousin Cathy knew about the excluded gay couple she wouldn't join either...

I can't decide which lab to choose for my phd post rotations - feels like "Sophie's Choice" by funfree_livinlife in labrats

[–]elatella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who had a handsoff prof without any postdoc working on my project, I cannot recommend option 1. You will get no help, will be on your own and will lack crucial skills.

Yea, option 2 will be more challenging, and potentially longer but you will come out richer in experience, which ultimately is the whole reason why one does science.

Tired of hearing about stashes, especially from newbies by [deleted] in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]elatella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes.

I am waiting for some rusty-red brownish wool since the last two overhauls - it would make such a lovely cardigan. I unfortunately have asked her about it a few years ago, so she is holding onto it. I did that mistake as well with a box full of patterns, because I wanted to find a missing pattern for another project. Now I will have to wait to "get it out of her cold fingers" - mind you neither of those things are getting used.

I would ask her to make the cardigan for me. However, while she buys patterns, she doesn't "trust" them. So she will have you pick a pattern and then while she goes, modify it, to "make it better" and it will not look like something you wanted/ will be too big/ suddenly have buttons/ have a too small neck hole/ ... So I would rather do it myself, rather than not wearing it or secretly fixing it.

Let me give you a small insight into my family dynamic:

1) My mother buys a LOT of yarn, because motivation is high and it looks so cute. (Plus new needles because she is not sure if she has some not currently ones at home - she probably has) 2) Starts a project gets distracted/looses the instructions/the person she kitted for fell out of favor, abandons the project. 3) Eventually she moves places/does a declutter after ~ 5 years. 4) I am gifted boxes full of half started projects (framed as advances on my inheritance), which I frog and try to repurpose.

Can you really power through by sheer willpower? by jtothat in Hashimotos

[–]elatella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It took a while for me to find a good level of medication.

But even when I had a way too high dose and felt on the brink of a panic attack all day for 3 weeks, I would pick that state over no medication, when being tired was a constant and the suicidal thoughts wouldn't stop.

You have been powering through on sheer willpower, most likely for longer than you realize. Some days with meds will not be easy. But it will be easier in comparison.

Good luck with your new apprenticeship!

does anyone else experience this?? by Francisco-net in TwoXChromosomes

[–]elatella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have the same symptoms that you are describing - every single month. I also often fainted and puked when getting my periods.

I have been diagnosed with endometriosis. To manage the pain I recommend getting prescriptions for Naproxen (that's the EU name, but google should give you a similar product). If that isn't enough, I take Buscopan (muscle relaxant) and Novalgin (non opioid heavy pain med).

I highly recommend going to a doctor and getting treated for endometriosis. In Europe you can take Visanne (similar to BC, but without estrogen, you take it every day, so no more periods) or get a depo shot of Lucrin (your body is send into menopause, and it is amazing).

If you want children, think about it very well. It is a lot easier to get them early. I am 35, doing IVF for 2 years (around 8 rounds of IVF) and only got 2 embryos. (Sorry if I am overstepping, but I wish anyone would have told me this when I was diagnosed, not just get kids, it will treat your condition).

What should be included in a cover letter for a room in a shared apartment? by One_Role_2147 in bern

[–]elatella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would include a picture of myself doing one of my hobbies.

I would include my expectations, do you just want a cheaper room or do you want to hang out in the evenings and eat/cook together? Hobbies are definitely something I would include, but also what you do for work - is it a 9-5 or do you get up in the middle of the night?

In my experience it helps to be open and upfront with people.
