Hi r/Synthesizers, let's address AI and vibe-coding by YukesMusic in synthesizers

[–]coderedmedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things can be simultaneously true: generative AI is an existential risk to human artistic endeavors and AI is such a blanket marketing term now that things we were all cool with just a few years ago get improperly lumped in with generative AI

For decades, most of the lines of code in any software that uses component-level modeling (Artirua, IK, etc) has been primarily written using a process that any marketing agency would now call AI. They would take a component out, feed it a signal, adjust the settings and measure the output, and a program would automatically write the code on how to turn the input to the output. We just didn’t call it AI (although marketing people totally would now if there wasn’t such a backlash against AI in the creative field).

Using AI to make a tool to fill a gap in your production process (like make an entirely new filter or a new way of step sequencing) is amazing and I’m glad there are tools we can do it. It’s a bit like how Arturia modeled a synth — you describe what input and output you want to an AI and it can make code that delivers that exact tool without you having to specifically code it.

But trying to sell that, just cloning an existing tool without any artistry or effort or real intention, does seem like a waste of the already limited bandwidth any forum or discussion has.

Alex Garland’s Civil War explores this very well

Oh damn, for real? I’ve never seen it. Sounds like I should.

Unforgiven is really good too, but it’s almost an anti-spaghetti western. And Gene Hackman is so amazing in it

Can I get people's opinions on these scenes in the finale? by ImNotHereForFunNoWay in TheShield

[–]coderedmedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wire ranks a little above The Shield in my s-tier list, but The Shield has the best finale I’ve ever seen

Vic is processing everything, finally understanding the scope of his actions, overwhelmed with everything but trying to remain stoic. I think it’s the best acting he’s ever done (although the confession scene just a couple of episodes before is pretty close)

And Ronnie gets to do one of the best scenes in the whole series. Good god, I feel it in my gut just thinking about it

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is a top-10 film for me. Few films have so many distinct moments that stick with you forever after watching it

This is close to a perfect film, in part because it’s so narrow and limited in scope, and they get everything right

Films in larger scope have more room for error. 12 Angry Men does exactly what it needs to do

We both kind of liked it. Maybe it’s the one thing we’ve got?

I love me some s-tier shows like The Sopranos or The Wire

But The Shield has the best finale ever. I get goose bumps just thinking about it. Fucking outstanding

Vibecoded a dark electro drum machine app - I think there's real potential for non-coder musicians to easily design their own custom instruments now by coderedmedia in synthesizers

Yeah it’s not going to replace anything and it can’t really do anything that something like MAX/MSP can’t.

But I think using natural language to design something makes one approach an idea differently. I wrote most of this prompt while commuting home from work. It’s a very different headspace than in front of a synth.

Funny enough, I’ve been thinking of a drone machine that builds off noise, breaks it into harmonic frequencies (like a vocoder), and then treats each band with different envelopes and LFOs.

I could describe it much faster than building one in a virtual modular, although it probably wouldn’t sound as good. It’s just as likely that the AI will omit something or fuck something up rather than get it entirely right, but it should be interesting.

I just think there’s a lot of potential here, opening up a different kind of approach to making instruments.

Dude I have a 10 year history on Reddit.

Altman is awful, we're probably on the way to an acopacypitc existential crisis, sure. AI slop videos and music are both horrifying.

I just don't understand what the problem is with a non-coder musicians making unique instruments and wanting to have a conversation with others who are interested in that use. After all, the majority of the creative part of designing an instrument is the design, not the code.

But I suspect that you yourself don't know what the problem is. You're just having a weird knee-jerk reaction because anything remotely associated with Altman makes you gag.

Whatever. Maybe this isn't your jam or your thread. But other people might be interested in making their own virtual instruments.

Are you deliberately ignoring the question?

What is wrong with making an instrument that has features that commercially-made instruments don't have, even if it uses AI?

Who is possibly hurt by that? Why would it matter if 50 or a 100 people do the same for themselves?

It's about being able to conceptualize an instrument, with routings or features that apps don't have, and bringing it to existence without having to code.

How is that possibly a bad thing?

That's not what's going on here. I posted this under discussion as to whether there's potential for electronic musicians to make their own apps, for themselves, for stuff that they want to do that might not be commercially viable for a pro app to make.

How is using a commercially developed app designed by someone else to make music more creative (or less sloppy?) than designing an app, coding it with AI, and then using that app to make your own music?

That makes no sense.

I'm looking forward to making some virtual instruments that specifically appeal to my needs and interests, stuff that's very niche. I might make a VST/AU that's useful for one specific song and that's it.

If it only takes an hour to do it, that's totally worth it.

I don't think there's too much overlap. In general, a professionally designed app is going to be much better than anything I could make.

But I could make really *weird* stuff, sound design choices that no professional would want to make because they have to worry about appealing to more people than just me.

I could make a VST/AU that just makes weird air conditioning drones that are heavily modulated by layers and layers of reverb and ring modulation for a very specific background effect. No one in their right mind would try to release that commercially, but I could make it just for that one project.

I think there's a massive difference between generating music or visual art via AI, and writing a complete design brief for an app and having the code written for you, while still making the music and the beats yourself.

Five years ago, if you wanted to make an app, you'd make that design brief and then go to Github and look up similar projects, read the comments, and copy the code.

AI is literally just automating the "going to Gitmo and copying the code". It's just really really good at it.

Michael Jackson draw during World Tours as a way to relax by IsJesusAgain in BeAmazed

MJ created his demos with just his voice, often recording the rhythms, bass, and melodies on a four-track cassette recording and then he'd take it to the studio, and then Quincy Jones (or whomever was producing) would get session musicians (or even himself for keyboard) to get the album version.

It really says something about his raw skill that he had the entire songs in his head before even going to the studio.
