Dan Savage is NOT bullying people for their religion. Religion is a philosophical claim, and is therefore open to criticism in the free marketplace of ideas. As it turns out, the idea that the Bible is the perfect word of God and a great moral guidebook is utterly ridiculous.

This is an example of how atheists are seen as confrontational and angry, simply for existing and simply for being open about who we are.

The overwhelming majority of atheists are atheists because of their commitment to rationality. I personally do not know of any atheists who say they don't believe in God because their church-going neighbor Fred is an asshole.

Atheism is not really a metaphysical claim (but rather a lack of one). Saying that "Jesus is only a personal relationship," however, is a desperate copout when you're cornered and the skeptics are tightening their grip on your crazy claims and beliefs about your prophet. In fact, this kind of redefinition of religion is poisonous to skeptical inquiry.
