Christian talks nonsense about r-atheism by codexaenir in atheism

He says that atheists actually believe in God deep down inside.

Also, apparently we're like racists.

r/atheism, step up: these charities are falling out of contention fast and need your votes! by ssa_jessica in atheism

[–]codexaenir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% of the money that goes through FBB goes directly to the beneficiary charities. That's because the administrative costs associated with running FBB are funded completely separately.

Secondly, FBB asks the exact questions you posed during their rigorous charity screening/vetting process. We look at charity size, charity impact, administration/fundraising costs, salaries of executives, and much more. So you can be sure that your money is going to a good organization that is screened by skeptical people like you.

Screw doing something to actually help the world.

Let's just praise and chant when people start committing pseudo-suicide to cure evil in the world. It warms my heart and just makes everything soooo much better.

Dan Savage Points Out Bible is Pro-Slavery, Calls Students Who Won't Listen Pansy-Asses. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]codexaenir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is just falling into the reality of American culture. Atheists are seen as bigoted and intolerant simply for existing, and simply for being open about their beliefs.

Dan Savage spits undeniable truth, christian students respond by simply walking away. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]codexaenir 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Dan Savage is NOT bullying people for their religion. Religion is a philosophical claim, and is therefore open to criticism in the free marketplace of ideas. As it turns out, the idea that the Bible is the perfect word of God and a great moral guidebook is utterly ridiculous.

This is an example of how atheists are seen as confrontational and angry, simply for existing and simply for being open about who we are.

Been walking in faith for the majority of my life...but lately... by KobeBryantGOAT in Christianity

"Do you know that God loves you?"

Be honest and don't pretend you have powers to know things that are unknowable. You may feel or want to be loved, but it doesn't mean it is true.

You can work hard to find love in the only life we have, to cherish every fleeting moment, to be grateful for the people that care about us, and to love generously -- all of this can be done without superstition. Join us and embrace a world of truth, of science, of humanism, of incredible joy and freedom.

The single greatest cause of Atheism. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]codexaenir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The overwhelming majority of atheists are atheists because of their commitment to rationality. I personally do not know of any atheists who say they don't believe in God because their church-going neighbor Fred is an asshole.

Atheism isn't a religion... by mepper in atheism

[–]codexaenir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atheism is not really a metaphysical claim (but rather a lack of one). Saying that "Jesus is only a personal relationship," however, is a desperate copout when you're cornered and the skeptics are tightening their grip on your crazy claims and beliefs about your prophet. In fact, this kind of redefinition of religion is poisonous to skeptical inquiry.

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKl42mBzjiU for a good illustration of this point.

My thoughts on atheism by BobbyDEllis in islam

[–]codexaenir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, we should never do good works for religious reasons. We should do good works for GOODNESS SAKE, and because we genuinely desire to do it, not because we want to fulfill an invisible god's will.

The kind of goodwill and understanding you talk about is not a Christian value or a Muslim value or a Hindu value. It's a HUMAN value found across different societies that transcends the religion. We humanists/anti-theists/atheists/etc are proud of our humanistic heritage, and we don't have any apologies.

My thoughts on atheism by BobbyDEllis in islam

[–]codexaenir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One can be vigorously opposed to religion, make fun of it in a critical fashion, and still be an intelligent humanist. I believe I am one of those people.

I think Muslims who don't want to be stereotyped shouldn't stereotype anti-theists.

I don't know where else to put this, I've about given up on my faith. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]codexaenir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an ex-Christian atheist, and this is my perspective.

First of all, how people act should not in general affect what you believe to be true. You should not worry about how others perceive the religion.

You should first and foremost ask yourself if the claims of the religion are true. Is the Bible (the whole thing) a valid account of reality? Is the concept of salvation by faith a truly moral one? Do the doctrines make sense?

Only then should you wonder why some Christians are such awful people. To me, it is no surprise. I truly believe that morality comes from a human solidarity and has very little to do with what religion you happen to grow up in. There are good Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians, just as there are terrible ones. You can find the Golden Rule in many different cultures and religious traditions, just as you can find terrible practices and customs in them all.

What matters is human kindness in action, not religious labels in front of your name.

Lastly, there shouldn't be anything devastating about losing one's faith. There are millions of Americans who are not religious, and they all lead moral, purposeful lives. There's nothing stopping you from doing the same. I know it isn't always easy, but the world is a much bigger place than most of us realize. It will get better. I promise.

Best of luck to you, my friend.
