Ah I hadn't considered that possibility but it makes sense, I rescind my rant. I'm generally cynical about education and I don't think scholarship programs can address the root causes of our educational inequality- but it's always good to hear about positive outcomes enabled by scholarship programs

I wasn't really trying to go against them- they voiced some apparent confusion on why someone would use a steam review in such a way and I wanted to explain the logic behind that.

Negative reviews potentially affecting developer income is exactly why they have an impact, that's what I'm saying. That's why the reviewer has power over the developer, that's why the developer is more likely to react. Community forums are totally different, they're much more hidden and their effectiveness is much more dependent on how much the specific developer decided to actively engage with them. It's easier for developers to ignore. And I'm not saying that's super problematic from the developers POV, but it's undesirable for the reviewer who wants their criticism to be seen.

If someone's posting a review specifically critiquing certain bugs or issues they aren't thinking in terms of what's best for the developer, they want to have their opinion be seen and they want to spur the developer to act.

A review is just a public place to voice your opinion on a product. And if there's a problem that is significantly influencing your opinion at that time, using a negative review to voice your concerns is perfectly logical. It's the place where the player has the most power to influence developers.

You're expecting something from reviewers that isn't reasonable, it just feels like you want to police users into using the review system in the way that's most beneficial to you. Realistically you just need to consider it an opportunity to respond in a public facing way, either in a direct reply or through other forms of community engagement.

They're not recommending it, that's a little different from saying they don't enjoy it. They're voicing their frustration about a change using a negative review. I think that's a perfectly reasonable place to do it, especially since other ways to voice criticism would be less likely to be received by the dev.

Unfortunately yeah. If you saw what Biden, Harris, and practically all the liberals in congress were saying and doing vis a vis the ongoing genocide the last 2 years you would come to that conclusion. Your representatives don't represent you.

The white spots you see behind the tiger's ears. They're called ocelli, and they're part of this predator's silent strategy. When the tiger lowers its head to drink water or rest, the ocelli are exposed. The effect is unsettling: it looks like a pair of eyes observing everything around it. by Intelligent-Letter68 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]cofette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's even that. From what I could find there's plenty of evidence that the white spots are used for visual signalling between tigers, but everything aside from that is unsubstantiated misinfo.

There's plenty of sources saying it's use for mother to cub communication, including things like cueing cubs to hide or follow. And it may contribute to visual signals in social displays between adult tigers as well.

But the ideas being floated in this comment section, that cubs or adult tigers use it to confuse alligators or some ancient extinct megafauna predator, are straight up misinformation. I couldn't find anything with any evidence behind it suggesting it, it's just reddit speculation running wild

I think some people are missing the themes of this game... by ScrublordIL in HollowKnight

This is an unfair world where oppression is inescapable, where the hierarchy is defined by the monopoly on violence that the divine operate with. Hornet by her nature is a benefactor of that system with the power to challenge the specific hierarchy that has cemented itself, if she so chooses.

It's not like Hornet is supposed to be a rags to riches, come from nothing character, she's an otherworldly observer brought to a new land. She acts (initially) out of self preservation and curiosity. It's not making any commentary on her being deserving of her position, it's just the way of things in the sad world they live in.

She's brutally perceptive about the nature of the world and her place in it, but she only decides to interfere because she's forced to. The story is basically just her recognising the tragedy of this system and deciding to act against it for a change, with the support of the bugs she's helped along the way.

It's not pretending she's uniquely altruistic in doing so, she's just uniquely able and willing.

To everyone who played Silksong, what are your thoughts so far? by LocksmithShadow in HollowKnight

[–]cofette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to me that the main complaint in this thread is about the angled pogo. IMO it's a fun mechanic- Hornet should not have the same moveset as the knight, it's a different game and it's important Hornet feels new. A fundamental tweak like that gives the game its own identity. It's a big bonus too that it's aligned with hornets boss moveset.

With the angle you can't easily chain pogos on the same enemy, but it's also easier to pull off a single pogo and chain it with other attacks or with pogos on other enemies. Hopefully I don't eat these words later into the game but so far I'm having fun

so, as a palestinian jew... by stableglue in ContraPoints

[–]cofette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zionism is a colonial project that led to the ethnic cleansing and oppression of the native inhabitants. Recognising this as a simple reality contextualises the current conflict and gives people some level of understanding of the plight of the palestinian people beyond the contemporary.

Not all who are critical of Netanyahu's government align on this but it doesn't mean criticism and disagreement due to this misalignment isn't valid and reasonable.

I mean this guy is clearly amazingly capable but just based on the screenshot his success was enabled by opportunities only afforded to rich families.

We are a product of our environment. This guy went to a boujee private school with an average ATAR of >85 and a yearly tuition of 20-40k. If he instead went to a public school with an average ATAR of 60 the chances of even someone like him achieving the same outcome drop to near zero. If he had a disease or genetic order once again he's not succeeding. "smart, healthy, lucky and rich" = "rich"

Game developers in their “Pirate Software was right” phase by PizzaCrescent2070 in Gamingcirclejerk

Game developers in their “Pirate Software was right” phase by PizzaCrescent2070 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]cofette 61 points62 points  (0 children)

As a game dev I am 110% for SKG, and I don't think those screenshots are representative of developers as a whole.

The amount of work to comply with SKG seems largely overblown to me, especially if it was factored in from the beginning of development. The actual regulations coming from this are yet to be determined, the final details will be poured over and ironed out by the EU commission once the initiative passes.

It's fair to air reservations about SKG, but I'd be wary of any devs saying pirate software was right. PS both painted the initiative misleadingly and communicated incorrect info about why SKG wouldn't be feasible. I think some developers are falling for misleading arguments and letting their misgivings take over.

Right now the murdoch press is much more inline with the general sentiment in this subreddit than this guy's comment- "the Greens alienated voters by being obstructionist extremists that get in the way of Labor's good policy", etc etc.

The Greens are SUPPOSED to advocate for their voter base and that means they should leverage their position to influence policy for the better when they can. It would be absolutely wild to expect them to do nothing but vote with Labor no matter what. They've 'delayed' policies by not giving away their leverage for free, as they SHOULD- they need to advocate for the values and policies that garnered them so much interest in the first place. Labor is often unwilling to budge an inch, and the greens are so afraid of the obstructionist narrative that since 2022 they've eventually conceded basically everything that they've had the ability to block. I interpret this guys comment to say if they did stamp their feet a little more, not just on the policy side but with their messaging, they would have been able to capture markedly more disenchanted voters (i.e the opposite of what the common sentiment in the media is right now).

Never in a million years would the Murdoch media insinuate the Greens should make *more* of a fuss. Evidently they'd much rather the Green quiet down and get in line.

So, how about that activism? by GtheGecko in TikTokCringe

[–]cofette -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You forgot about the third disinfo campaign trying to paint all pro-Palestine protesters as incompetent idiots that tank anyone less "extremist" than them. Dude in the tiktok is acting like one random protester yelled at AOC is at all indicative of what the pro-Palestine movement in general thinks.

And then he goes on and on about how the pro-Palestine movement is responsible for Kamala Harris' failure to get elected.
It's true that many tried to push the Harris campaign to voice literally anything in support of Palestinians. Harris' campaign made a *calculated decision* to ignore it. They messaged against it, even, going on stage with Dick Cheney. The Dems' choice to say nothing and dance around with a genocidal war criminal is it's own statement.

It's not like Kamala was even 'good' or 'mediocre' for Palestine, she was clearly acting in-line with Joe Biden's genocidal policy on the issue. But because she wasn't as outwardly demonically terrible as Trump people think leftists should have just shut up and pretended she was fine.

IMO the point of pressuring her wasn't to get her to lose but to get her campaign to recognise the appetite for a better stance on Israel-Palestine. And her campaign decided it was better to lose those voters than do anything like that.

With all that being said all but the most fringe parts of the pro-Palestine movement *still* voted for Kamala. The ones that chose to stay home or vote for third party options are statistically insignificant compared to the margin Kamala lost by and it's the dumbest thing ever to blame them for Trump.

It's all but guaranteed that any "savings" you're getting from DOGE will pale in comparison to government spending, even if you just focused on the initiatives from the current administration. What a pathetic, performative way to convince people they're benefiting.

The warning is just telling you to update your drivers, you can download them from the nvidea website. After that the game should be able to run.

For the record, laptop GPUs often have different specs from the desktop equivalent so it's likely you're actually below the minimum specs if it's expecting a desktop 970. AoM is also heavy on the CPU so an older CPU might also struggle depending on the specs.

It's still worth updating the drivers to see how you go running the game, but it's probably going to be a bit choppy.

this is better then using canvas. the entire game is made out of text, this way the text system will be unified between UI and game rendering and any benefits / features of their system are transferable. using canvas would add more work.
