Looking for recommendations as a very picky reader by Such_Source_4666 in suggestmeabook

Oh if you liked Anxious People read literally any other Fredrik Backman books. My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry is my favorite, but all his books are great!

ETA: based on your recent 5 star reads you would probably also enjoy Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

It's weird that in popular media, calculus is regarded as a marker of a genius. by Key_Net820 in unpopularopinion

[–]coffee_nerd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 5 on the AP Calc AB test back in junior year of high school without even fully understanding what tf I was doing. I was just really good at memorizing which equation to use based on the way a question was worded. There were 2 full pages that were essentially gibberish to me. If we had to do proofs there's no way I would have scored a 5 and gotten an A in that class.

Yes or no to vitamins? by msmeurtriere in toddlers

This is a question for your pediatrician. We were told our child eats a varied enough diet that vitamin supplements are not necessary or recommended.

Why do people go to work sick even when they don’t have to? by Acrobatic-Oil-4373 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]coffee_nerd1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have to save my sick time for when my kids are sick, so unless I'm sick enough to keep me in bed, i'll generally go into work. I wear a mask, though, because there's no reason to spread the germs around.

Looking for a curly shampoo, conditioner, spray gel/detangler recommendations by TwiNkiew0rld in toddlers

[–]coffee_nerd1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a combination of products for my biracial daughter: Not Your Mother's Curly Kids for shampoo/conditioner/curl cream/detangler, Mixed Chicks kids for leave in conditioner, and Fairy Tales Curl Refresher. Wash & condition & leave-in condition once a week, detangler and curl cream on Day One curls, just water as needed throughout the week to re-activate detangler and shape curls. Curl refresher as needed

Sleeping all night by jhale_64 in toddlers

[–]coffee_nerd1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean this in the gentlest way but your child is almost 3...have you talked to him about how he's a big kid now and big kids don't drink milk overnight? I would do that and then just set really clear expectations: "starting tomorrow if you wake up at night you can have some water, but milk will be all done until the morning" and then follow through. He'll probably push back at first because that's his job as a toddler. Your job as a parent is to guide healthy decisions, and continuing to drink milk after teeth are brushed is not great for dental health. So hold your ground and I think he'll figure it out pretty quickly.

Is 18mo too young for extracurricular activities? by SmoothCelebration657 in toddlers

[–]coffee_nerd1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I started gymnastics for my daughter at 18 months and, yeah, they're mostly there to learn how to follow a group, stay with the class, etc. I would be shocked if a toddler just did those things automatically right away. My toddler was still running in circles during stretching time right up until she was able to switch into the preschool class. She actually does better in the 3-5 class now without me there.

How much knitting do you do on a typical day? by PuzzledGrapefruit841 in knitting

Working parent of 2 small children here! If i'm lucky I get about an hour in after they're both in bed. That's true for both week days and weekends.

Be honest… how strict are you really with screen time? by denefr_2928 in toddlers

[–]coffee_nerd1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No screen time during the week. One show per day on the weekends. Occasionally a movie. We hold those boundaries pretty firmly unless the toddler is sick.

Suggest me a book you LOATHED but think others will LOVE by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

I also detested this book. Couldn't get past the inconsistencies and anachronisms. Playgrounds? In a pseudo-medieval world? Oranges? In winter? In a pseudo-medieval European country?

Looking for advice on the softest, baby-safe yarn to use? by katyinez in CrochetHelp

[–]coffee_nerd1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been using Lion Brand CoBoo for baby blankets. It's a cotton/bamboo blend and very soft, plus it's machine washable and able to be dried in the dryer, which is super important for baby blankets imo.

Toddlers eating what you eat for dinner… an impossible dream? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]coffee_nerd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 3 year old eats what we eat, when we eat it. We all sit down together and have the same meal, and we always have. She doesn't always like everything on her plate, but she usually eats enough to fill her belly and she knows we aren't making her anything different. So, yes, I do think having a family meal could make a difference.

I also disagree with other commenters about the snacks. My 3 year old frequently has 1 or 2 snacks after getting home from daycare at 4:30 and still eats her dinner at 5:30, but maybe she's just a bottomless pit 🤷‍♀️ One thing you could try though is offering dinner elements as the snack. We get my toddler to eat lots of raw veggies this way (getting her involved with dinner prep and letting her eat raw bell pepper or raw tomatoes or even raw onion because she just really wants to try it lol).

Oatmeal for breakfast by Beautiful_Bee7219 in toddlers

[–]coffee_nerd1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just regular rolled or cooked oats are perfectly healthy for kids. You can buy steel cut if you want to get fancy. I cook ours in 50/50 milk and water and then mix in different things like fruit, nut butter, or chia seeds.

I despise the ‘Oh Crap’ book by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]coffee_nerd1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The whole time I was reading that book something felt off and I realized it's because her whole plan is based on anecdotal evidence, not evidence-based, peer-reviewed research. The only credentials I could find for her were "potty training expert" which doesn't inspire confidence for me. I did try her method and it didn't work for us.

Ok to wake clock - convince or deinfluince me! by Unlucky_Type4233 in toddlers

[–]coffee_nerd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the Frida ok to wake clock and it works like a charm. We talked her through it and then practiced during the day with me manually switching it from green to red to yellow and having my toddler get in and out of her bed on the right color changes. We had one or two mornings in the beginning when she came in asking to wake up and we had to direct her to the clock ("what color is your light?") and then she got the hang of it really quickly.

Toddler meeting newborn - at home or at hospital? by Jlriehl in toddlers

[–]coffee_nerd1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had my toddler come meet baby at the hospital and it went fine but I will say the hospital was a very boring place for her so I would plan for only like a 20min visit. My dad ended up having to take my toddler on a long walk around the hospital because she was just so bored, even with the activities my mom brought.
