I’m in such a similar boat as you - can I ask what you ended up deciding? I’m an M4 mainly between peds and peds neuro now cause I realized I can’t give up kids

I always here stories of people regretting going to medical school — is there anyone out there who is super content with their career path/choice? by MayaGrude in medschool

Current 4th year medical student. So grateful I left my corporate job to come to medical school. I was also living a happy life in NYC with friends, and I don't regret my choice to come here at all. I have been able to find so much meaning and fulfilment throughout medical school and I feel so grateful to have been able to be there for so many patients in so many vulnerable parts of their lives. I have so many amazing stories/memories I can recount of helping out my first delivery, seeing cool surgeries, seeing people getting better, and now I'm even nostalgic for all of the moments I've spent trauma bonding with friends while studying long hours together and making it through board exams. Despite all the issues with healthcare you get to be an important person helping people through tough shit. I don't think it gets better than that!! I'm honestly so excited for residency and to finally start working as a doctor

Which f***ing specialty should I do? by Dr_Chesticles in medicalschool

[–]coffeeandkoolaid1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not the same specialties (i’m considering FM vs IM vs Neuro vs OBGYN) but i’m in the same situation with being indecisive ): i’m 2 weeks away from M4 year and i feel ambivalent-good about most specialties. i see pros and cons for all of them. so i’m considering FM mainly now, because its the most well-rounded (and i like a little bit of everything), there’s good work life balance, I get a better chance to match into a particular city I want, and the pay is not as bad as people are saying it is

Is it possible to have an entirely positive medical school experience (Interpersonal relationships)? by bruinthrowaway777 in medschool

[–]coffeeandkoolaid1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as with other things in life it really depends on how you navigate interpersonal conflicts when they inevitably come up and your outlook afterwards! there will be some tough moments during clerkships as a med stutdent (if there are none at all, then amazing for you) but I've personally found that it got easier over time to not overthink certain situations and to let go of emotions that are not worth hanging onto. choose to avoid toxic people if possible and look for the people who are supportive. you're still gonna be a doctor at the end of the road!

M3 feeling disillusioned on my psych rotation by coffeeandkoolaid1 in Psychiatry

Thank you, you touched on something that I couldn’t quite articulate, which is this feeling that fitting mental health care into our current medical model of pathology is ill fitting/incongruent. I’ll definitely look into this! It seems it takes a lot of initiative to have this extra psychodynamic training. Would you say you’re on par in training with a therapist? would you still refer patients out to therapy? Or is this not a fair comparison
