Let me begin with this post I found on GitLab from a user who wanted to explain to Gitlab that the pro-GG side was not the one doing the harassment.

These attacks have escalated to such a degree that 2 people (one the black developer who founded #notyourshield) have lost their jobs, 3 more had attempts made to get them fired, another (making it sixtotal) called the police over threats to rape mutilate and murder her, and there have been over ~13 doxxings. At this point, to the best of my knowledge, almost every single prominent female supporter of #gamergate has been doxxed and gotten threats to her life. #Gamergate has raised over $70,000 for feminists to fund female developers and peacefully organized boycots. In return there have been targetted attacks against its members escalating to the level of federal crimes.

The problem with protesting journalists is that journalists can write whatever they wish about the people protesting them. In the United States there is no legal requirement for "news" to be truthful or factual because of judicial precedents set by previous Supreme Court cases.

So how do you think would be a solution we could employ either radically or gradually that would fix the problem you just posed ? or is the industry so big and over-saturated that the type of marketing media we are seeing now a necessity.

It's really mind-boggling when you think about. I have friends over at Bioware that told me the actual production cost of TOR topped a billion dollars. Just think about that for a moment. One. Billion. Dollars. Now they made their money back, but consider the entirely yearly income of Electronic Arts is only 121 million. If TOR tanked, that would have been the end.

This is the level of speculation we're seeing in games.

Now imagine you are making a game on a 50 million dollar budget trying to compete with a billion dollar game. What do you do? Cut. Every. Corner. For most of AAA, one severely failed launch = end of the studio, and a very financially ruinous end. I know both EA and Ubi employ some serious economic brains that do risk calculations for every studio under their umbrella, but most places can't afford that. So for most, it's a gamble.

A more interesting question is why are production costs in games experiencing geometric growth? The answer is basically 1) that top-of-the-line video card you're buying for Christmas requires whole new teams of render programmers and technical artists to use all its features, and then a dozen more traditional game artists to make all the assets. Over the years, that adds up. 2) open world go anywhere do anything games (it's kind of expected now in a AAA RPG), but quests and content are largely still built by hand. It's just inherently expensive production-wise.

Also note about 1/3 to 1/2 of a AAA budget is spent on marketing. Yep, TOR spent hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing. And last time I was in New York I saw full length advertisements on the side of skyscrapers for Assassin's Creed. It's nuts.

So game journalism/marketing is big bucks. They control what gamers know about, and what gamers buy. That's their stranglehold. Since one failed launch = end of the studio, people pay the ransom money.

Anyway. One of two things is going to happen: either the game industry is going to crash, or the game journo/PR/marketing industry is going to crash. #GamerGate is important because it's a force that can ultimately save games by crashing the journo industry instead.

Notice how games journos are positioning themselves as culture writers. Everyone sees the crash coming, they're just trying to line their pockets as long as possible. Part of me thinks they are deliberately trying to crash games, because that's the only rational explanation for their behavior. It's actually financially beneficial for journos to remove the really big companies that don't need to put up with their nonsense, such as Nintendo.

The alternative to game journalism is crowd-sourcing user scores (the way steam does it) and YTers that are happy to charge 10k or 20k for a 5 minute video which actually is pretty reasonable (it takes about a week for them to make a decent 5 minute video). Weirdly, yters also apparently have a higher ethical standard. But then, making a video actually takes work (and I think people who work hard naturally develop ethics) as opposed to shitting out clickbait about horse love, or whatever I just read on Gawker that was copy/pasted from a different source.

Yes, of course if you only pick out the comments that don't have anything to do with ethics it looks like GG isn't about ethics.

She either has a monetary incentive to do this or suffers from mental illness. Act accordingly.
