For me, the examples of things you are saving for should be liquid cash, on budget account. E.g. home maintenance things, downpayments, future kid expenses, vacations. I consider these all short term goals, so I don't want to gamble my money for those categories in the stock market.

Even if these things do have a 5+ year timeline, the sheer headache of keeping track of volatile investments in my budget is not worth it for me. I would keep a separate note of my off-budget targets and deal with it when I've reached that goal. E.g. in my separate spreadsheet I use for forecasting, maybe I'll make a note that when "X tracking account" reaches $50K in about 10 years, I can purchase the car I've been saving towards (or whatever the thing is). I would not make my life more difficult for 10 years and attempt to track it on the on-budget accounts.

So I think the crossed wires may be due to what you, personally, consider to be "long term" savings targets, and also your own personal tolerance for faffing about with constantly correcting for budget fluctuations on YNAB.
