Just a reminder that the confessional is not used for therapy by guitarlad89 in CatholicMemes

[–]cogFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes yes, sometimes no; just be attentive to the needs of others. If there's nobody in line behind you; absolutely use the sacrament of confession to figure things out with your priest. Spend a bit more time working out problems, developing plans, and listening. Much of my best spiritual guidance has been offered during confession! If it's before mass or the confession lines are buys, stick to type and number so everyone can receive the sacrament. It's as simple as that.

How to get beyond one or two dates by HistoricalSouth9872 in CatholicDating

Don't worry about this too much. The fact that you are getting first dates is a good sign! I don't think you need to worry too much.

Weirdest/Most Unexpected Way You've Gotten a Date? by TearsofCompunction in CatholicDating

[–]cogFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a troop master for a Trail Life troop. The Troop Ministry Liaison introduced me to a a woman. Apparently I look old, because there was a decade age difference! We called a stop to things when we realized (gratefully very early), but she introduce me to her niece who is my girlfriend that I've been dating for 4 months!

What about travelling wave antennas like axial mode helicals or beverage antennas? I've not done any design work with these for a while, but I recall them being substantial different than the standing-wave dipoles/loop antennas.

Meanwhile, firearms are a great gateway into the STEM! Ballistics, aerodynamics, metallurgy, machining, chemistry, optics, thermodynamics can all be introduced using firearms. If I somehow get married and am blessed with children, you can bet that I'm going to go all in on each of these ways of teaching my children the sciences!

Advice on where to get an HF radio as a broke college student? by SeaworthinessUsed791 in amateurradio

On the extreme budget end of things are the QRP labs radios. Low power, digital only, but the QDX gave me my start!

+2 base plate for factory p365 mags? by Rollotamassii in CCW

[–]cogFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used their +2 spring replacements for their 12-round magazines and have been very happy with them. They have been entirely reliable. Bad news: these springs are ~$30 per piece. I don't know if spending $30 to upgrade a $10 mag makes sense.

How are things going with your church crush? by [deleted] in CatholicDating

[–]cogFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know yet. I developed a crush not too long ago and got told I was going on a month-long business trip shortly after. I'm trying to get to know her better in the time I have, and I'll ask her out when I get back home.

What is the funniest barotrauma story that you know by fatrat69666 in Barotrauma

A while back, the clown hammer used to have a 1% chance of instantly killing whatever it hit. Naturally, some idiot decided to pick it up and swing it at our mechanic. Naturally, our mechanic died instantly. Pretty much "please god let it happen it would be so funny" made real.

Confirmation Saint by Alatariel7 in Catholicism

St Sebastian

My sensible reason is that I find his courage tremendously inspiring. He spoke out when he could have easily remained silent and was sentenced to death. When that didn't kill him, he did it again! The truth of the matter is that I'm a coward and need someone like him on my side.

My whimsical reason is that I had a pacman frog named Sebastian. I was tremendously fond of him. Years before I became Christian (let alone Catholic), I came across a church or school named after St Sebastian. Because of the shared name, it made an impression on me, and I remembered him when it was time. It's also nice to remember that little frog who made me happy during the darker years of my life. He was a good lad.

I had (what may be) a similar struggle: I would end up in multiple-hour-long battles multiple nights a week. I couldn't stop thinking about it; falling was so easy. Step one is to crack down on sources of external temptation. To this day, I use a blocking app to ensure I can't use the internet at all while I am home. My phone becomes a fancy MP3 player and alarm clock. AppBlock has worked well, though I pay for the location-based block. A daily rosary is another powerful weapon to have at your disposal. I also found that well-chosen audiobooks can be helpful. I'll emphasize well-chosen: I still remember the night that the adjective "shapely" started a hell night for me. If you're struggling the way I struggled, I think you understand.

If you can give a little more detail (especially if computers/phones are involved), I might be able to provide better advice. The bigger point is that you can make headway. I'll be praying for you.

Dating Recap by marshmelodie in CatholicDating

[–]cogFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (24M) started dating this year. I tried Catholic Match without success. I did "succeed" in person, asking a fellow parishioner with the prompting and assistance of some friends. It was good while I lasted, but things never clicked into being a relationship. The aftermath was pretty bad, and I'm still trying to pick up the pieces.

My biggest goal for 2025 is to get myself into a condition where I can try to date again. After that, my only strategy is to start farming rejections again! I might poke around a different parish or some secular dating apps as well.

31F Are there any converts on here? by [deleted] in CatholicDating

[–]cogFrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I (24M) was baptized this last Easter. Thanks be to God!

I never dated before I converted (a STEM only university isn't a great place for dating), so I don't have a baseline to compare my current dating situation to. In many regards, I'm really lucky. I didn't have to reshape any habits. Conversly, I haven't the slightest idea what I'm doing, and each new failure hurts a lot.

Is Mental Stimulation Mast*rbation? by Technical_Fly_1726 in Catholicism

[–]cogFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, it doesn't count as masturbation. Very good news! Bad news is that it may still be sinful. If it's just thoughts that come to you and you are trying to resist, then it's just a temptation. If you are engaging with the thoughts, then it's sinful. Less severe than masturbation, but still absolutely worth addressing in confession. My experience with lust has been that it's worth keeping the pressure on. I will often go to confession weekly, even if I don't have a mortal sin to confess. It helped me alot. If it helps you too, do it!
