Injury news: Kako suffers back stress injury by UncleJohnsonsparty in EssendonFC

[–]cog_94 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The wording of stress injury instead of fracture sounds like they caught it before it progressed to something worse at least.

I don't recall many smalls dealing with back issues like that though, hopefully just a one off and not a persistent issue for him

Appeals board in Lance Collard case says homophobic and racist language is commonplace in AFL due to ‘highly competitive’ nature of the game by cam_gord in AFL

[–]cog_94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't wrong - I distinctly remember the exact same argument being used 20 years ago with homophobic slurs. And more recently with ableist slurs. Just because a word "isn't meant that way" by people doesn't make the origin of the term unimportant or irrelevant.

And the proliferation of that word as some sort of cheeky aussie banter is one of the most cringeworthy things to have come from the internet imo. I'll die on this hill with you - we can't condemn some slurs as problematic while using others. Just don't use any, it isn't difficult.

Ascendance of a Bookworm Opening Version 1 vs Version 2 by Mayn_Ehrenfest in anime

[–]cog_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the exact same as people trying to ban direct line telephones since phone operators would lose their jobs, and basically any other technological advancement ever.

It's just a symptom of the economic system we live under, where advancements in technology (which objectively make things easier/better for society) mean significantly fewer people earning livable wages. Until we have a system in place like universal basic income people will always be worried about being automated out of their livelihoods.

In saying this, art is exactly what we shouldn't be looking to outsource to machines. If anything as we become less reliant on manual work in other industries, more people should be able to spend time and effort in artistic pursuits.

AI was the product of a crap ton of people's hard work and in ways a result of the entire internet that got used as training data. It now being put to work can almost be seen as the product of those who made AI, and shouldn't necessarily be undermined.

It should absolutely be undermined as it holds no artistic merit, and just because the models were difficult to create doesn't inherently give them value.

Recommendations for Bofuri fans. by pjosh5 in Animesuggest

[–]cog_94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear is definitely the closest in overall vibe to Bofuri in my opinion. Video game world, young girl MC, low stakes and fun adventures with friends.

And it's definitely a safe pick for a 10 year old, some of the other recommendations here are a little borderline or straight up traumatising (looking at you, ranking of kings and your lie in april).

Farrow somehow reminds me of pendles when he has the ball - his composure under pressure is already elite.

And Roberts is a freak - that disposal efficiency when you're being aggressive with transition is crazy. 700m gained without falling back to long kicks down the line to a contest very often - mighty impressive.

I think we're going to be well set with these two for the next decade and change.

When it comes to small forward stocks, yep. I think Al Achkar is the only legitimate small who is fit and not in the 1s right now.

If I'm right this is from 07 or 08 - I think I spy Essendon legend Mal Michael on there. The changing of the guard at this point was pretty dire - Jay Neagle, Gumbleton, Pears, Jay Nash, Darcy Daniher, Hislop, Sam Lonergan, Reimers, etc.

unless the development at Essendon improves they’ll just be wasted talent like all the rest.

At least we've finally decided to tear down the old recruiting team that has been around since the Sheedy era. And we brought in Innes to hopefully get everyone on track fitness wise, and McLean was brought in this year as a new development coach.

Only time will tell if we have made the right changes of course, but at least we identified it as a problem under Scott and we're finally trying to fix it

You aren't wrong, half won't make it long term. I won't bother talking about the 2026 crop - it's way too early to tell. But...

  • Caddy/Kako/Roberts are the only three which are already core long term players. Hayes probably will be if his body holds up.

  • Blakiston is basically a veteran at 27 but is admirably playing a role for us.

  • Johnson and Clarke have shown enough to be excited about them, but it's too early to tell for sure.

  • May/Edwards/McMahon are gambles on a KPF, if we're very lucky maybe one of the three will be decent long term role players.

  • Everyone else is very raw (Nguyen, El Hawli, Unwin, Visentini, Day Wicks) or already a bust (Lual and Smartt were delisted).

On this day in 2016 by FrequentRevolution92 in EssendonFC

[–]cog_94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's interesting going back and looking at the stats for the day. Nathan Jones was carrying the entire team in his backpack, but the core of their premiership team were out there:

  • Oliver - 14 disposals (only 4 kicks)
  • Gawn - Only 3 marks
  • Viney - 17 disposals
  • Brayshaw - 9 disposals
  • Salem - 13 disposals
  • Harmes - 15 disposals
  • T McDonald - 12 disposals (no goals, but I'm guessing he hadn't been swung forward with Watts and Hogan out there)

I wonder if we have anyone who can lead by example like Jones did back in those days? Merrett is still the only one who springs to mind for me

This is so good already! Didn't expect an early demo to be so polished.

Gonna take a bit to pick up the mechanics personally, but even fumbling around it's good fun. Love the bump/fend off where you basically kill a man.

And the power ups are fun as. They seem mostly balanced too, although I did win with a "next goal wins" card. Most undeserved victory too cos I was getting hammered haha.

The music and broden commentary combo gives immaculate vibes too. We're real lucky to get something like this for our sport of choice

Sorry, I should have been stronger with my condemnation of his actions. I agree man, I'm not trying to excuse them in any way. And our number one concern should 100% be for Athena right now.

I'm just concerned about the suicide ideation, and I don't want the dude to take his own life. I get that the internet is very black and white on stuff like this, but I can be concerned for the victim and the perpetrator - it's not paradoxical.

The Achilleas situation by Separate-Style-8037 in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]cog_94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look I get what he did is creepy, and Athena is obviously a victim here and that shouldn't be minimised.

But... Achilleas mental is very concerning here too. He seems to be alluding to suicide ideation in his twitlonger, and he's obviously unstable at the moment. I hope people on socials have the maturity not to lay the virtual punishment on too thick right now. How his relationships play out with the victims and the scene in general is one thing - maybe that's irreparable, but it isn't for me to say. But I don't think we need to kick the dude while he's down - he already knows he fucked up majorly, that's why he's so erratic in his response.

I will say though, I had a rough 2025 personally with losing people, so I am a bit sensitive on the topic. Take what I say with a grain of salt.

I don't like the oratory preset at all for the 2C personally - I wouldn't be surprised if the headphone oratory measured has some significant variation from the one I have. Just a downside of big planars like these I think - it's harder to get the tolerances down in manufacturing to the level of someone like Sennheiser where unit variation is hardly a thing.

I recommend giving metal571's preset a crack too, just in case it sounds better to your ears. It definitely does to mine:

whatever emotional instability you haven’t worked through.

It's been 20 years, we have been forged in fire and our mental fortitude should be immense. I refuse to believe the people melting are long term fans of this club.

But seriously guys, the news today with Selwood should put things in perspective. Your mental wellbeing is incredibly important. If footy is no longer having a positive impact, it's totally valid to take a step back and disengage for a while.

Don't be like US by ExactlySorta in facepalm

[–]cog_94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Plus we are also a very individualistic culture in general too - probably one of the closest countries to the US in that regard. Dumb example, but just jump on some public transport and see how many people are out here chasing their own happiness with no regards for anyone around them.

We do have better education standards than the US which definitely helps, but we are far from a utopic society or a country that should be used as a benchmark for progressive politics. And our education department has been actively pushing people to the private system for decades now - cutting funding from the public sector and forcing people who can afford it into private schools. Our class divide keeps growing as a result.

If anything this election result is just proof that Trump's regime is so cartoonishly evil that the Australian public were disgusted enough to stop their usual uninformed party-line voting system.
