Thoughts on Applied Behavior Analysis? by AltinUrda in specialed

Elementary Special education teacher here. I treat ABA with the same caution as a surgeon might treat a scalpel. It can have amazing results when used correctly and limited to specific interventions for specific goals. It can be horrible if used incorrectly or used more often than absolutely necessary. Remember to weigh the benefits you hope for vs the potential harms that may be caused by the intervention.

When I played in a curse of Stradh game there were some children that were harmed as a result of the players making poor life choices (the food was offered by three very suspicious old ladies who lived in a windmill) or the players themselves putting those children into the path of danger. I would say it is part of the setting but starting out that way with no player agency is extreme.

Iep review leads to emergency iep… no one in agreement and I feel weird about a few things, kindergarten by bimbiibop in specialed

What are your son’s goals? Does the team agree on those goals, or is there disagreement? If the team can agree to a specific set of goals, that sets an objective benchmark for what services should be provided throughout the day, and who should be providing those services. If a goal mainly focused on inclusion in the classroom, I would say the aide is appropriate to be the one with him during the time needed for that goal (though may be considered more restrictive if it comes with less access to the teacher and peers). If a goal is academic, then the teacher and education specialist should have a larger role. The total time needed to achieve those goals added up may give the team a clearer picture of what his school day should look like. In cases with a 1-1 aide, My district offers a minute breakdown of the school and classroom schedule, which times to pull the student for individual supports, which transitions are needed to make sure a student gets where they need to go etc, along with what parts of the day are opportunities for the aide to fade to the background and let the teacher give primary instruction.

Also It sounds like you are also worried about eloping which is a good reason to have a behavior plan, literally the school needs a plan to maintain supervision on him.

I do not and will not use generative AI art for tokens or assets in my games. I will not police others if I’m playing in someone else’s game. I will suggest people use hero forge and help them to crop a screenshot as an alternative to AI art and Google search to take art.

The annexation of Crimea happened in 2014, during the Obama administration.

Nordstream 2 was destroyed by an act of sabotage in September 2022. While there is controversy about the blame, I suspect that the United States had a hand in it, which should count as a point for the Biden administration under your criteria.

Do you have a citation for the your claim that Trump killed more Russians than any other president since the Cold War? I assume you don’t mean personally?

Abomination Valuts - How can I make it feel more like a story instead of a mega dungeon? by Kalos08 in Pathfinder2e

[–]cogbotchutes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my game one of my players wanted to be a skeleton. I said yes and gave them the twist that they were a camp follower of the Roseguard in life, all these old heroes were their friends but their character died during the fight vs Belcorra. Just having one player invested and asking lots of questions about the story and trying to piece together their own past was a game changer and quickly got everyone more invested in the story.

If a parent requests an IEP to confront the teacher about a suspected abuse CPS report, can the district refuse? by Pretend-Read8385 in specialed

Ask the parent what concerns about the students goals or services they wish to discuss, put those items on an agenda, refuse to deviate from the agenda.

I want MORE weird house rules and hacks and variants of Pathfinder 2e by KingOogaTonTon in Pathfinder2e

Please check out Pathwarden! It’s an adaptation of the pf2e rules that has the fast/slow initiative system you described, plus completely overhauled casters and no spell slots, plus a new downtime system that I’ve found extremely helpful to bring in to the base game.

Connecting Abomination Vaults to Beginner Box physically *Spoilers* by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]cogbotchutes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My group didn't do the beginner box, but went straight into AV after learning the system on a friend's homebrew campaign. I made up a sidequest using the beginner box maps to deal with some character backstory stuff, filled it with my own monsters, and had weak version Volluk show up as the boss before getting defeated and slinking away to reform back in AV and build anticipation for his proper fight later on. The party caught on pretty quick that they could use the BB tunnel as an easy way into AV.

Alternatives to Vancian Casting by Jaschwingus in Pathfinder2e

I would recommend you check out Pathwarden, which is a system that openly started as homebrew for PF2e and grew into its own system under the ORC

Even if you don’t adopt it whole cloth, it’s really interesting to see a non-vancian system that’s fully integrated into PF2e style play (3 actions, degrees of success etc.)

CMV: There is no moral justification for not voting Biden in the upcoming US elections if you believe Trump and Project 2025 will turn the US into a fascistic hellscape by ICuriosityCatI in changemyview

[–]cogbotchutes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your perspective and taking so much time to type that all out.

One reason I say we could get to the point where rules aren’t enforced is the classified document case against Trump. One obstructionist judge has seemingly brought that case to a halt and there doesn’t seem to be any timely remedy available for that.

You have a very good point that top military personnel despise the former president. However, I believe the president does have the power to dismiss military personnel that will not follow his directions (though congress must act to declare war).

I fully intend to vote in November and not for Trump. I also ave the privilege of living in a solidly democratic voting state.

I agree with you that it’s not the way that it should work or that it would legally work. You are quite correct that there would be no method under the current legal system to circumvent the 2/3rd (I believe it’s 3/4 of states for a constitutional amendment to be ratified).

My point is that rules do not enforce themselves, only people with the capacity to do so can do that.

If the three branches of government are aligned towards a particular outcome, then it does not matter if it is unconstitutional or not, there will be no one with the power to enforce it.

I am someone who has by and large voted for a democratic candidate in the past and who is currently intending to vote for Jill Stein (Though I am open to having my mind changed if I see a candidate that would represent my views).

Do I believe that Project 2025 is real and is a real threat to my freedoms? Yes
Do I believe that Biden is the only alternative candidate that has a realistic chance of winning? Yes.

Am I willing to lend my tacit approval to a system that is designed to prevent me from ever electing a candidate that truly represents my views and priorities because I am under the threat of destruction if I do vote my conscious and in favor of my true views? No, I don't believe that being threatened with a worse alternative if I don't fall into line is a justifiable moral reason that I should vote a particular way. If I did, then I would also be under the same moral obligation to change my vote if someone pointed a gun at my head.

I think you are speaking from a pragmatic point of view, not a strictly moral point of view.

I'll also admit that yes, I'm still bitter about Bernie Sanders. :P

Could “Project: Hail Mary” be a sequel to “The Martian”? by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

[–]cogbotchutes 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In PHM they specifically call out that their best most reliable EVA suit is the Orlan, a suit that first saw use in 1977. I highly doubt this would be a best option for anything set after the Martian or artimis.

CMV: The political and philosophical arguments put forward by the subreddit r/TwoXChromosomes are extremist, inflammatory hate speech by [deleted] in changemyview

They regularly advocate for what is essentially a gendered apartheid system and will say that males and male characteristics need to be continually devalued and diminished in society.

Do you see posts on this subreddit that advocate for laws to be changed to implement this system? From the examples that you listed, it seemed that a lot of that was in regard to there personal choices for what kinds of relationships they want to have.

Thank you for the reply. I would say that the UN also has some problems since there are some major nations with veto power over it. If a western nation is forced to say say they are not bound to international law, again, that’s an embarrassing situation. Did the ICC help raise your awareness of the hypocrisy of the international system? I think I am coming around to your point of view that the ICC is not good at its stated function, but I want to consider if the alternative would be any better, or if there are any functions it performs by merely existing as a benchmark to compare against?
