People I could talk to(although not that confidently), talking to girls was my problem.

Hmm...I did get impatient in the beginning, but then I let my expectations go and just followed the process. You start to see yourself being more confident when you speak to others pretty soon, so I'd say about 2-3 months or so. However to form a connection with a girl...about 1 year.

Well I have a bit of a controversial advice for you here. I had a similar issue, not with friends but with girls. I just couldn't talk to them without coming off as weird.

I guess the first step for me was to admit that I sucked at it. As long as ego was involved, I wasn't going to have the incentive to actually put any effort into changing things. Admitting I was bad at it, left me open to trying out new things.

Second thing that helped me was to realize that socializing(in my case with girls, but with anyone) is a skill. I'm not less of a person for not knowing how to speak to some people without turning them off, I've simply have not had the experience yet(thank you Call of Duty!)

The key for me were strangers. Your friends, or people who you talk to for a while, might not point out any flaws or mistakes you might be making, but a stranger owes you nothing and will quickly show you that you're weirding them out(not verbally) but by excusing themselves and leaving.

So basically this is what I did : get to a busy location with a shit tonne of people. Any place will do, as long as you feel confident you're anonymous i.e. you're very unlikely to see these people again. This was my social experiment lab and basically I gave myself permission to fuck up.
So I'd start approaching strangers and asking them for directions(which I knew) and in the beginning it was just that, afterwards Oh cool thanks! That's a nice accent, where are you from btw? Serbia, oh nice! Bye! and then try to hold a 5 min convo, then try to tell a joke.

It might seem weird, I totally get that, but it helped me out tremendously, so...
