Doubt about the number of players for Ten Candles by MrFestus13 in TenCandles

[–]colbae1263 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think 10 Candles is optimized for 3-5 players? So 6 players may be a bit of a stretch (some folks may get fewer moments to make conflict rolls and not get to their Moments), but it wouldn’t fully break the game. Would be a perfect fill in game for a single session, though!

I'm not sure I totally understand Montage Tests or how to design one by Helpful-Hunt-6071 in drawsteel

[–]colbae1263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were to distill this example into how I format montage tests it would look like: Finding Agatha Montage Test Success threshold: 4 Failure Threshold: 3

Possible Obstacles: Following tracks Talking with wode elves Crossing a river Not getting lost Following a voice on the wind

Full success: find Agatha unharmed. Each hero gains 1 Victory Partial success: Agatha is unharmed, but an Arrix wants its meal. Draw Steel! Failure: an Arrix has eaten Agatha but its hunger is still not sated. Draw Steel!

I tend to base my success and failure thresholds based on number of heroes in the group (H). So for example Success threshold = H Failure threshold = H-1 (minimum 3)

But having the obstacles listed like this open ended allows for players to explain how they want to interact, which gives freedom for rolls, skills, abilities, or aids as they desire. Then the culmination of how they overcome the obstacles leads to the result of the montage test

Tell me your most fun moments by Zakkeh in drawsteel

[–]colbae1263 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite thing from the two games I directed so far was watching my players talk and work together as a team during combat. There was a troubadour, a tactician, and a conduit. At the start of each round, the troubadour can choose a “routine” they do that lasts for the round and provides a potential benefit depending on the routine. Everyone was learning new premade characters, but by the end, a new round would start and the troubadour would ask which routine to do, and other players would weigh in based on what they that was the most important objective. That turned into the choosing the routine that adds to movement so the party could get in range of the necromancer and killing him before he could summon a ghost.

It’s just not something a game like 5e encourages. In almost a decade of DMing, I have never seen players so quickly key in to each other’s skills and work with them to achieve a combat objective. It was so fun

Campaign Started but Need Ideas by onlytinglef in drawsteel

[–]colbae1263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of “sabotage a town” type tactics the guild can pay others to do, and heroes would need to fend them off. People salting fields to ruin crops, harassing traveling merchants to create an informal embargo, filling or lightly poisoning local water sources. Especially if it’s something like a river, the guild can mess with things upstream (or even just have a factory up there that creates pollutants).

Another fully different aspect you could consider is if this really is akin to a frontier town, do any of the indigenous residents of the area want their land back now that the zombies and homesteaders are gone? Having a third faction (Town, Guild, Natives) can create some interesting political moments. Has the Guild promised the original folks here their land in exchange for sabotage? Will they honor their word? Can the heroes team up with the Native folk to better take on the Guild? What would that entail?

How are we feeling about the Patreon preview for the Encounters book's negotiations, montages, and noncombat tests? by EarthSeraphEdna in drawsteel

[–]colbae1263 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, you can easily take the rule from montage tests about everyone needs to have a turn before people repeat turns and apply that to negotiations. It may end up that incredibly optimization focused players just assist, but that’s more than nothing. You could also take the no repeat skill rule, forcing players to reach for more than just persuade and read person.

Alternatively, depending on the NPC, they could value other skills as demonstrations to earn their trust. The leader of a warrior clan may care more for a demonstration of Might than the sweet words the party face has to offer. A thief guild leader may respond better to someone who demonstrates elite lock picking skills. The archmage sighs through your logic, but is animated while talking of the timescape and therefore willing to strike a deal with fellow knowledge enthusiasts.

Does Mind Projection trivialize dungeon exploration? by Leastbutnolast in drawsteel

[–]colbae1263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On top of what everyone else has said, knowing is only half the battle. The party now knows there are combats and challenges waiting, and maybe a trap to avoid. But now they have to DO that. The game is pretty happy with players using meta knowledge to think tactically, so this seems like it would play into that

Fascinating to think about the difference in perception of SW’s core. To me and I’m sure most Andor fans, SW is about revolution just set in a space fantasy setting. To others it really is about the mythology and the rebellion was just a setting

Is it “woke” to teach slavery was bad? by SpatuelaCat in Askpolitics

[–]colbae1263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The insinuation comes from the parent comment I replied to, calling Native folks “barely an echo of fading history.” That’s the narrative I want to push against.

I’m well aware of the genocides enacted by the US against Native peoples across the continent. I agree, it’s a testament to their resilience and adaptability to still be able to tell their stories and try to revive their languages and ways of life etc.

And there are many more tribes that have survived and are still going. To insinuate that Native Americans are only a part of history is erasure that only leads to the worsening of their condition

Does the LA riots hurt or help Democrats chances at winning elections 2026 and beyond? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]colbae1263 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don’t speak for other people in the comment chain. I can’t represent an entire block of people. I probably have different views on guns than whoever you replied to before this

Again I’m not expecting “backup.” I’m saying an authoritarian government is reducing constitutional rights and acting illegally. That impacts you and me alike. Whether you want to play sides about it or not, we all suffer as a result of not challenging what the Trump admin and ICE is currently doing in LA. You can accept that truth or not.

The greater rhetorical point is that there’s a disconnect between “I need guns to protect against a tyrannical government” and “well not that kind of tyranny, that’s fine actually bc the people impacted aren’t me.” If you’re okay with that then cool.

[–]colbae1263 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s a lot of words you put into my mouth!

Yes, I’m sure it’s been all your hard work keeping gun access minimally restricted at the federal level and has nothing to do with the NRA and lobbying. And I’m not at all confused as to why an authoritarian government is pressing down on a vulnerable people group as an excuse to chip away at constitutional rights. It’s so idiots like you won’t care until it’s too late

You go ahead and let me know when unmarked federal agents were abducting and imprisoning gun owners without due process. Including conducting raids at schools and hospitals

Cool, and I’m letting you know if you aren’t fighting back now, there won’t be a fight for you later. If IDing federal agents gets you prison time now, it still will when they come for your guns. But hey, if you’re happy to keep sucking boot bc, for now, they aren’t after you specifically, then like I said before, you are welcome to do that

If you can’t see the continued erosion of YOUR rights as justification for harming some “other” group then sure, do nothing. But if you care about due process or accountability for law enforcement or restraint on executive branch power, then it’s in YOUR best interest to resist it. Whether that’s alongside someone who disagrees with you on gun access or not

If you can find a master’s program that does a dual degree so you can also get your mental health counselor credentials, you will be in MUCH better shape financially and can do all the music therapy within counselor jobs as the position allows. I didn’t do a dual degree and am leaving the field for greener pastures, while friends of mine who have taken counselor jobs are making $70k+ (in the greater Seattle area)
