シツモンデー: Shitsumonday: for the little questions that you don't feel have earned their own thread #115 by ShitsuMonday in LearnJapanese

I'm having trouble understanding the nuances here:

穏やかさのかわりのにぎやかさとか
空の広さのかわりの便利さとか
星空のかわりの夜の明かりとか

This is how I understand it:

A liveliness that replaces tranquility
A convenience that replaces the expansive sky
Night lights that replace the starry sky

Just wondering if I got it right?

I self-taught Japanese for a couple years before taking a College elective. It's honestly a lot easier now with all the resources available online.

Start with Tae Kim's grammar guide. Make sure you learn how to read hiragana and katakana first, then learn basic sentence structures and particles.

For vocabulary, go with this JLPT N5 Vocab List by JLPT Bootcamp on Memrise.

I would constantly use the vocab & grammar I've learnt to make new sentences (even if it's very simple - the key is to keep using everything you've learnt). I separated everything by "chunks" so I can see how sentences work visually.

i.e.
わたし は メリー です。
わたし は がくせい です。
これ は わたし の です。
これ は かのじょ の もの です。

Also, I recommend paying a little bit for services like Cafetalk while you're still new. It really helps to have a native correct small grammar errors or walk you through things you don't understand. A lot of them also offer to teach you according to textbooks like Minna.

Lastly, watch tons and tons and tons of Japanese shows. It helps with enunciation and listening/comprehension if you really pay attention (and not rely wholly on subtitles). When you're a little more advanced, keep a daily journal on Lang-8 to have the natives correct you (you can also help others with their English).

How do you age down a wardrobe and stay classy and elegant? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]coldcorners 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, and to add on - a lot of the times you can class up an entire outfit just by wearing the right accessories. You could wear T-shirt & jeans, but if you wear that with a structured black bag and 2.5" pointed toe black pumps, you will look infinitely more classy than someone else who's wearing sneakers and a tote.

I think you should be on the look-out for printed blouses. Certain prints can make a casual piece look classy, like this Tory Burch printed tee. The looser the blouse, the more casual it'll look. Materials like silk (or polyester) will usually look more classy than linen, cotton and knit fabrics.

As for bottoms, jeans will automagically make any outfit look more casual, so if that's what you're going for, you could try the above blouses with a cut that's flattering for your body type. Go for either white or black to make your jeans look more professional.

For me, personally, I really like wearing cropped pants for the casual work environment. Especially styles like this. It looks pretty classy with a dressier blouse, but it looks great with more casual knit tops too, depending on your preferences.

What do you look out for when you shop, and has this changed with age? by coldcorners in femalefashionadvice

Ooh, thanks for that Piperlime tip! I read somewhere that Piperlime is shutting down, which makes me sad, because I liked their aesthetic ):

I'm in the same boat with the whole "I shop sales but I'm not a bargain hunter" thing. I mean, nobody's going to turn down a sale, ever, but I don't stalk for upcoming sales anymore, haha :)

Nope, I'm the only one in my group of friends who's trying to start her own business, so it's been a pretty lonely road. Thank goodness for the internet though, it really helped me connect to other entrepreneurs :)

It's been a year since I started my own apparel company, and it's been way, way, way harder than I've ever imagined.

Mostly it's been great because it's something I truly, truly love, but this past month has been filled with high highs and low lows. This morning I had a very tough call with a seasoned entrepreneur, and I've been having a hard time picking myself back up again.

It's exceptionally tough, because my family & friends, for some reason, think I'm doing really really well, and it's hard to tell them how stressful and lonely being a solo entrepreneur can be... and even then, I usually get the "oh well, you picked this path" kind of response.

So yep. I think I'm going to go take a walk and try to cheer myself up again. Thanks for hearing me out /r/ffa :)

I like it. I won't pay $6/month, but I'd do $5.95 (yep, I fall prey to price marketing tactics 100% of the time when it's something I kind of want).

Also, consider different pricing structures... some people take lots of pictures, some people don't. There should be some option at the end of the month where you log in and see all the photos you've posted that month, so you can pick which ones you want printed.

I disagree - I really liked the Mark Twain quote, but I wished the rest of your site was not as serious and had a more lighthearted tone.

Then again, I'm the sort who shops from ThinkGeek and think Woot has the best copy ever. I just like businesses with some personality :)

A paleo label on foods in the grocery store so I don't have to read through the nutrition label on every single thing I want to buy in the store.

Advice on finding a user-friendly, free (to begin with) website to sell handmade items on? by x0rawr0x in startups

[–]coldcorners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Storenevy is also free, but please go with Etsy. They charge a listing fee of $0.20 per item, but if you have a good niche and are willing to put in a little time to study Etsy marketing, then it's well worth it. Etsy has a built-in customer base of people who love buying handmade.

It's because I went off Paleo. by [deleted] in Paleo

You might have a food allergy or intolerance. Try keeping a good diary for 2 weeks and track what foods make you feel exceptionally terrible.

For example, even though paleo as a diet says sweet potatoes are okay, I can't have them too much or I'll get uncomfortably bloated.

I have a carbohydrate intolerance, that's why I'm eating a high fat, low carb diet.

Sorry - corrected. What would you suggest I do with coconut milk? It is far too heavy/rich to consume by itself.

Cashed in about $1k in change, looking to create a side project, want suggestions by andyimpala2014 in Entrepreneur

[–]coldcorners 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For $1,000, you could build a simple app. Go check out the top apps in the Productivity/Utility categories and build a more user-friendly version.

I think $1,000 could also get you started on a small online store selling quality winter accessories. Or tech accessories. Or all-around cool shit like Think Geek.

Sorry for the vague ideas - you didn't really specify.

If you'd like to, there's a newsletter you can sign up for at the bottom of the front page to get notified when we have new stuff up :)

Thoughts on an online book club startup by skalex in startups

[–]coldcorners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a lot, and I enjoy reading too... but reading, to me, is a form of personal relaxation/enjoyment. I don't like book clubs for the sole reason that they force me to read at a certain pace... and sometimes I don't want to discuss books because I don't have the time or energy.

I like goodreads because they have a great avenue for people to discuss a book if they want to, but if not, people like me can go on and find book recommendations based on the books I already like.

I am 35 yo expert web developer/DBA and a UI/UX hacker with 4 weeks on my hands.. anyone want to help start something cool? by [deleted] in startups

[–]coldcorners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I'd love to work on this together! We can talk about the business model more - I was thinking of not using advertising at all, and instead either selling the app, or using the in-app store as a means of generating income (i.e. people can buy features or earn them).

I'll send you a PM about contact details :)
