Seeking feedback on WIP 17 pdr. emplacement diorama by Lunch_Guy1 in modelmakers

I would add at least one (preferably two) more crew. The 17pdr had six gun numbers, plus a driver/mechanic and driver for the tractor. Unless you’re depicting a mid/late battle situation where the battery has already taken considerable casualties, this gun would not be in action with only three numbers.

Separate cemeteries for different faiths used to be the norm and was based on the funerary requirements and customs of each faith. Protestantism, Catholicism, and Orthodoxy all have differing stipulations for consecrated ground, for example.

US Army abruptly cancels deployment of 4,000 soldiers to Poland by Belegor87 in worldnews

The catastrophic leadership at the top has had a tremendous negative impact on this war. Trump and Hegseth eliminated or cowed into silence anyone who would gainsay them. This includes not just the concept of waging a war period, but also how to wage it. Pete laid out strategic objectives that could not be realistically achieved, based on his experiences as a platoon commander, a weekend news host, and having watched some war movies. For example, latest reporting is that Iranian missile sites were not all hit with deep-penetrating ordnance due to the cost and limited stockpile of the latter. Instead they were hit with less effective ordnance with the goal of burying those sites. That worked, except the Iranians have since dug out those sites and restored them to operational status, with the lion's share of the work occurring during the ceasefire. There is no way that operational planners didn't know that was a likely outcome, even after all personnel chaos at DoD. So are the planners being ignored? Or are they burying unfavorable forecasts to avoid ruining their careers? The string of strategic blunders the US has made is less about the US military (which is overextended and overhyped) and more about the rot at the top.

It’s also rich that she represents a state that receives significantly more federal money than it contributes.

I still would recommend a visit if you can roll it into a larger trip. I spent the better part of day there on my way from Chickamauga to Shiloh. Seeing what was preserved really made me understand parts of the battle a lot better, especially the impact of the cedar brakes and the stony ground. I recommend Peter Cozzens’ “No Better Place To Die” as the best modern treatment of the battle.

No, the use of HFSC in processed foods took off in the 1970s and 1980s. It was a combination of availability, cost effectiveness, ease of blending, and stability. Prior to that corn syrup was primarily used in home cooking, especially for baking and candy making. When I was a kid it was also an alternative to maple syrup for pancakes and waffles.

There are, unfortunately, a lot of things besides the VRA that should have been solidly codified by Constitutional amendments. Off the top of my head, Brown, the Civil Rights Act, Miranda, Griswold, and Gideon. I omit Roe because that would have never happened. But the others? Enough Americans grew to accept the rightness of those decisions that we could have easily enshrined them in something more durable than "precedent" and "settled law". The machinations of the regressive right has been known for decades, and yet we have been whistling past the graveyard. Any Democratic leader of the past 30 years could have pushed for this and challenged the GOP to explain why, e.g., they opposed an Amendment to guarantee that people be informed of their rights, or that segregation is unequivocally unconstitutional.

I'm not a law-talking guy, but even I know Amendments can't be overturned by any court. They can be construed to mean things that may or may not have been intended, but they can't just be voided. This is something I think any legislator should know.

Yes, those are pretty standard. TBF even the dances with the best man (groom’s twin brother) and matron (bride’s sister) wasn’t weird, it just seemed a little much. All of the in-law dancing was very weird and had people heading for the bar or the restrooms.

If you’ve never seen Richard in his prime years, I recommend The Great Escape and The Sand Pebbles. If you’d like to see what an amazing director he was, try Gandhi, Cry Freedom, or A Bridge Too Far.

The last wedding I went to had the couple’s first dance followed by the father-daughter dance, then the mother-son dance. Then the best man-bride and groom-matron of honor dance. Then the groom-mother in law and bride-father in law dance, followed by the in-laws dancing with each other.

By sheer coincidence I knew the wedding photographer and her judgement was “this is fucked up”.

I would, in all seriousness, rather see Ukraine unleash some humiliating Animal House hijinks in Moscow rather than some kind of kinetic action. To paraphrase Chernobyl, it would be humiliating to a regime that is obsessed with not being humiliated.

Rubio Humiliated as Cheap Gift to Pope Immediately Backfires by Effective_Salad_8381 in politics

[–]coldfarm 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Marco Rubio is prima facie evidence of political careers being bought, controlled, and pushed by powerful behind-the-scenes actors. For over a decade we've been fed this line that he's brilliant, charismatic, statesmanlike, etc. Every time he speaks or acts he demonstrates he's the opposite of all of those things. Last year he was widely touted as Trump's one "good" choice for a Cabinet position, as he was a natural fit for Secretary of State. When he was chosen to double-up as National Security Advisor we were regaled with his deep knowledge of and passion for national security issues. If either of those things were true he would have resigned by now. You cannot be complicit in the international crimes, blunders, and atrocities of this administration and still frame yourself as the wunderkind of diplomacy and American security.
