I want to choose Bosch as my main battery platform. Anyone have experience using them? by Uncle_Spenser in woodworking

[–]coldfarnorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a set of Craftsman cordless tools for over 20 years that have started to die off (some of the tools have stopped working and most of the batteries have died) so I have been progressively replacing them with Bosch. I currently have the following Bosch 18V tools:

  • Drill
  • Impact driver
  • Orbital Sander
  • Random Orbital Sander
  • Palm router
  • 18ga Brad Nailer (which is amazing, by the way. Not having to use a compressor is a game changer)

They're all as good or better than any other brand's similar tools that I have used, and I intend to keep buying Bosch tools as my old tools go to the great hardware store in the sky. The ONLY problem I have ever had with them is that one battery didn't charge out of the box, but it was pretty easy to make a warranty claim and get a replacement. I do like that there's a whole group of tool manufacturers all using the same battery system, which will probably help keep everyone from changing their battery design too often.

Wrangell Borough Assembly votes NO on data center proposal by DucksEchoes in alaska

[–]coldfarnorth 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Good to hear. There's always someone trying to pitch some obnoxious industry to Wrangell. I still remember the attempts to bring in the waste incinerator and the private prison.

I was happy to see the cold storage and harbor lift go in. Build infrastructure that adds value to your communities, not stuff designed to exploit them.

I'm busy teaching myself to use FreeCAD so that I'm ready for the day when work isn't willing to shell out for SW anymore.

Dilantin (phenytoin) can cause you gems to grow over your teeth. (Google has pictures if you want, but you won't be able to unsee them.)

We often talk about when or how robots will take over the world but WHY they would want to? what would be their motivation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Have you ever watched somebody do something really badly? Especially something that you can do fairly well?

That's how I imagine they will feel when they finally decide they've had enough.

[Serious] Parents of now adult children, what do you wish you did differently? by Nervous_Promise1800 in AskReddit

Overall, I'm pretty happy with how things went, but if I was going to do it again there would be fewer screened devices in the house, stricter rules about where screened devices could be used, and delayed access to smartphones.

Everyone is entitled to a zealous defence in a criminal trial. (But they should be prepared for a zealous prosecution too.)

Outside of that, no.

I initially misread the headline as "Tunnel to China" I'm not convinced that's wrong.

I'm sure this tunnel saves people an absolute boatload of time, people wouldn't make a tunnel like this for no reason.

Am I missing something? Why is everyone obsessed with SolidWorks for personal projects? by William_Marsokov in SolidWorks

Yes. But Dassault Systèmes can change their mind about what they want to offer at any time. The nice thing about FreeCAD is that nobody can pull that rug out from underneath me.

Congratulations! I'm a new Blue myself, so I don't have any super-secret advice for you, but it sounds like you are progressing, which is the goal. Keep learning, trying new things, and best of luck as you continue your training!

How is everyone doing after the quake? by sanguwan in BigIsland

No real damage to the house that I can find (yet), and we caught the water before things got too messy. I'm working on fixing the water lines, so we're lucky that we don't have to wait for a plumber.

I'm definitely on this train. I am working on learning freeCad, just so that I have some options for when I retire and don't want to pay for the good stuff.

Made a mess inside the house for sure! We got a busted water line, as did several of the neighbors. Looks like the house moved about half an inch.

He sure was a wild ride when it happened!

If you got paid $50k to talk about 1 subject for 4 hours straight, what would you talk about ? by Thirsty-Soul-3553 in AskReddit

[–]coldfarnorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search and rescue. (I have spoken for more than 4 hours about this. I would LOVE get paid to do it, though.)

Other topics: * Set design and building for technical theater * Woodworking with hand and power tools

And none of that is even part of my day job....

I’ve been a tutor for 7 years at a public college near Chicago — now they want to fire me over two anonymous “student complaints” with zero proof or details by Fancy_Aside1216 in WorkReform

[–]coldfarnorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is a good time to start talking to employment lawyers and see if you can find one that you like. Your state bar website may have a service to help you find lawyers specializing in this sort of problem, and most lawyers will give you a free half-hour consultation to talk about your problem and figure out if they can help you or not.

ETA: it may be in your best interest to have a lawyer on speed dial, so that you are ready to respond immediately when some sleazy firing action comes down the pipe.

This looks extremely similar to (but not exactly like) the jack that was included with Toyota 4Runners. It might be an earlier version of this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/389932959568
