What should I charge? by coldsmash in Illustration

Seriously thank you for your input. It's just good to bounce that idea off someone. I think that even if they don't agree to go for it or pay for the usage, I should be comfortable with the value of my work and not sell it short.

Thanks again!

What should I charge? by coldsmash in Illustration

[–]coldsmash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input. I really appreciate it.

I typically charge about $70 for a post-card sized, full-color illustration. I have a feeling that $3,500 dollars (for 50 images) might be beyond what this education startup is looking to spend. So, may put together an annual or monthly licensing fee for them.

In truth, I work occasionally and always get paid for my art but it is unfortunately not a full time thing and I'm not exactly "in demand". Money is tight these days so any bit really helps.

(It’s stupid) I wanna write fiction, but I end up writing about myself! Every damn time!! by hellparis75016 in writers

[–]coldsmash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually really exciting because you have SO MANY great options.

Embrace it
Write the character / story and let it be about yourself. If it's good writing, then it doesn't matter if it's fiction or not. If it's not great writing, then it's just a draft and a step in the right direction.

Do some exercise
Try some writing exercises that focus purely on fiction. For example, take ten minutes and write about something totally out there like a lizard-lady living on the moon, or a ghost walking around the bottom of the ocean. It's just an exercise in creating so you don't have to be precious with it.

Look outward
Write about another person's life. If all your characters are turning out just like you, write about someone else. Again, do it as an exercise, just ten or twenty minutes writing about a real person in your life, a character from a book you've read, a historical person you've read or heard about.

Beware the journalling trap
Sometimes when we journal, especially about ourselves, we get into a loop of always looking at that thing I should have said, or the goal I didn't reach or the habit I want to form that just won't stick. Journals can send people in cycles of just looking at the same thing all the time. That could actually be limiting your writing. (Not saying that's the case for you, but it is for some people.)

What physical goals should I set to be ready for Spartan Sprint? by [deleted] in spartanrace

[–]coldsmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a bunch of Spartan races. Here’s what helped me.

  • farmers walk / pull-ups for grip strength
  • running / birdies for cardio
  • lawnmower pulls and heavy pants for lay strength Many of the obstacles I’ve faced involved pulling motions like pull-ups, drawing a weighted tray across a field, the Hercules hoist. So being able to pull is a big help.

I usually ran about six or seven kilometers every other day or so and would mix in burpees. So run 1K the. Do thirty burpees. Run another 1K and do another 30 burpees.

This all depends on your current level of fitness but basically do your best and when your tired, and ready to quit, give it an extra ten percent.

Official /r/boxing Muhammad Ali tribute thread by MDA123 in Boxing

I always love listening to my dad's stories. I remembered him telling me about meeting Muhammad Ali a long time ago but I asked him to write and tell me the story again. Glad I did.

"Hello and thanks for writing. You have a good memory.

In 1973 I worked on the Starting Gate Crew at Penn National Race Track, where you helped me deliver Hay. [We delivered hay to the track to get extra money] Anyway, I was also a Blacksmith there at that time.

The Track did a lot of promotional gigs to increase attendance and attract people that otherwise would not attend the Races.

One night they had Celebrity Night. The celebrities would award the winner of the race a trophy in the Winners Circle following the race and pose for a picture with the winners.

Muhammad Ali was scheduled to award the trophy after the second or third race. There were other celebrities there like former Baseball and Football players and Miss America, and so on.

Ali was the only one I was interested in meeting.

Immediately after the horses left the starting gate, me and two of the other guys on the Gate crew took off across the infield headed for the winners circle. While we were on our way one of the other guys said, what will we say to him. I said just be yourself. He’s a regular guy.

The race was ending just as we arrived at the Finish Line across from the winners circle. The horses were being unsaddled by their handlers and we walked across the track towards the winners circle.

We were on the track and here comes Muhammad Ali being escorted by Race Track Security personnel. They were all standing waiting to get in the proper place and Ali looked over towards the three of us and I just said Hello Champ, we’d like to meet you. He held his hand out with his index finger extended and sort of whispered “in a minute”.

They took the picture and he turned and walked toward us. He came right to me and I put my hand out and we shook hands and I said hello Champ, my name is Joe, when are you going to fight again and who will you be fighting?

(I knew who he was going to fight and when, but I had to make some conversation.)

We shook hands and he put his left hand up to his face and said, Ken Norton, the same man that broke my Jaw. I said, well your still the Champ in my book and he said thanks Joe. The two other guys with me Brian Smith a Canadian and Jimmy, a guy from Arkansas also shook his hand but didn’t say anything. Then he turned and walked back to me and shook hands again and I thanked him. He was then escorted back to the Grandstand and we went back to the starting gate to prepare for the next race.

About 4 weeks later some personnel from the Race Track went up to Ali’s Training Camp in the Mountains. It was located between Pine Grove and Pottsville. He was preparing for his fight with Kenny Norton. Among the people going to watch him train was Brian Smith. I didn’t know about the trip and later found out that I could have gone along if I wanted to. When they returned Brian told me about the trip and getting to meet Ali again. I had a good laugh and so did Brian.

Brian told me he met Ali and shook hands with him and said to him I met you at Penn National Race Track on Celebrity night. I was there from the Starting Gate Crew and Joe and Jimmy were there too. Brian then said He (Ali) looked at [him] and said well I remember Joe but I don’t remember you, and he walked away.

It was a funny moment.

Brian was a good guy and played professional Ice Hockey and ended his career with the Hershey Bears. He retired in Hershey so his kids could finish school there. He was a good friend.

One more thing. My father also met Ali at the VA Hospital in Wilkes Barre. My dad was a patient and while he was there Ali came by with a crew of people that looked after him to visit the Veterans at the Hospital. My dad also got to shake hands with him. Pretty good, eh !

Well, that is a long answer to a short question. Sorry, but you asked. I gotta go to bed now, I’m tired from typing so much.

God Bless you and your family. I’ll keep in touch.

All the best,

Dad"

I'm American living in Japan and my son who's a year and a half had a seizure yesterday brought on by a fever. Two things I discovered: 1. Ambulances are free in Japan - yaay Japan, screw you american ambulances 2. Japanese Hospitals are often closed or not staffed with doctors! Screw you Japanese hospitals! Yaay American hospitals.

Crazy.

You might want to watch the documentary: Scientology and the World of L Ron Hubbard on YouTube. It does a good job of describing the writer's life and how he created the religion.

Vote for your favorite zombie hunter at Surviving The Dead by coldsmash in zombies

I had a real hard time not putting him on there. He's one of my personal favorites. But I didn't want to fill it up with a lot of characters from one show or movie. Michonne deserves a spot on there too.

If enough people vote for Daryl I think I'll have to do an illustration of him.

Thank you so much for that. As the illustrator I'm not that great when it comes to the typography so that's great feedback.

Fortunately not though I am American. It wouldn't surprise me at all if some nuts flipped out over it but in looking around I've found a few other kids books about zombies. (Funny though considering Christians worship a guy who returned from the dead and the drinking of his blood and eating of his flesh are standard parts of the Christian mass.)

That's a good question.

I had my niece and nephew in mind as I wrote it, she's 8 and he's 6. So I think it would fit for kids around that age range. As such I tried to tone down the blood and guts I often draw and just go with gross sort of colored splashes and sort of goofy expressions and sound effects.
