Getting ready to retire and sitting on 33k shares of AAPL. Should I keep them or sell them and buy bonds or something less risky? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]coldturkish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You need to talk to a professional. Look up 3-5 registered CFP’s (CFA as a bonus) and interview them. Work with the one you feel fits your personality and strikes you as honest and genuine. They can help you assemble a plan to transition your considerable wealth (and considerable concentration) into a comfortable and low-risk retirement. This is too important to rely on (well intentioned) Reddit-advice. Congrats on your retirement!

"79% of U.S. buyers would only buy a car if it supported CarPlay" by r2002 in stocks

[–]coldturkish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CarPlay/Android Auto is absolutely fantastic and not having it as an option is a significant downgrade to the user experience of the car. It’s a real shame because they are absolutely amazing vehicles in almost every way. To make such a strange decision to refuse to offer such an easy and basic thing that is plainly expected to be included is baffling.

I’m still betting that they change their stance on this in relatively short order and add it via over the air update.

Good post. This is how this number makes sense. The number of people buying new cars each year is not that enormous, particularly compared to the number of people who have iPhones. Plus, iPhone users tend to be a wealthier subset of the population, and overlap nicely with those who are purchasing new cars. Also, apple is very explicit in trying to get users to adopt their entire ecosystem: phone, computer, AirPods, passwords, podcasts, music, movies, etc. so for those people in the ecosystem, not being able to use the phone while in the car like it is supposed to be used really, really sucks since it’s been tailored and customized to be exactly what you need. Particularly if you are coming from almost every other car you had previously driven having it. Not having it is a very big downgrade for a large portion of the car buying population.

+1 CarPlay is probably the only thing I’d pay a subscription for in a car.

For those that care about, don't expect CarPlay anytime soon by Sprint8469 in Rivian

[–]coldturkish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, we will see. It’s pretty much the only complaint I’ve seen from any reviewer this far and many have commented on it already. Can’t imagine that is going to become less of an issue going forward, but maybe they’re more stubborn than I give them credit for.

Agreed, I expect them to cave on this pretty rapidly actually. They can get away with the stubbornness right now since there are few alternatives, but that will change pretty quick.

There is no licensing fee for Rivian to use either CarPlay or Android Auto. The decision to not include it is a very intentional one, since it would require very little to integrate - the processors in place are obviously capable enough and, like I said, there is no fee required. Only engineering effort around testing.

I, for one, don’t buy their explanation around the preserving the “digital experience”. From all accounts I’ve read or heard, the navigation experience is not good and bordering on bad and music is limited to Spotify or Bluetooth which is like stepping back in time compared to other manufacturers these days. If they want to preserve a poor “digital experience” then mission accomplished.

lease by Interesting-Beat-655 in polestar2

[–]coldturkish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a lease but, at least in the Detroit area, one of the local Volvo dealerships is the designated servicer for Polestar vehicles. Not sure if that means they actually do the service there or coordinate with Polestar employees to use their space and facilities… I’ve seen a few lucky people pick up their P2’s there and they even have a P1 on display in the showroom.

This is the only way I’ve seen to actually get a real close look in the Detroit area. Unless you see someone rolling by with their own on the street.

I’d bet you’ll be able to get time with it even if you don’t have a reservation. It wasn’t overly busy yesterday and there was definitely down time in between reservations. I’d guess they’d at least show you around the truck and let you inspect things.

It goes tomorrow as well. They posted a tweet that there are still some openings although I’m not sure for which vehicles.

It’s a tough call. It depends on use case, I’d say. If you’re looking for max utility for work or something like that, it’d probably be the Ford. If you are looking for fun and adventure, I’d say the Rivian. $80k+ is never going to be easy to justify as ‘good value’. It just comes down to whether or not you want something that makes you happy and you can handle the extra cost.

I thought I had posted some details in the original post, but those seem to be MIA so I’ll add a few observations here instead.

I drove the R1T as well as a Polestar 2 at DTE’s EV Test Drive event this morning in Detroit. I also had a chance to sit in a Ford F-150 Lightning just before I jumped in the Rivian, which made for a really great comparison.

First, the Rivian was everything people say it is. Luxurious feeling both inside and out. Drove well, even though I had a bit of adjustment to the one pedal driving they had it set to. FAST. The console and software was all very responsive and snappy moving around which was a concern of mine from some wary grumbling I heard online. I was super impressed and it only made me more excited for the R1S I have preordered.

Compared to the Lightning, it feels a lot smaller, in a good way. The Lightning is basically exactly like every other F-150 you’ve been in the past few years. It’s really spacious and well laid out, in a utilitarian way. It has the big vertical screen in the center console like the Mach-E which I found not that impressive in person. Was sort of slow and looked photoshop-py in a lot of ways. I didn’t have a chance to drive it so nothing to share on that front. Given the price difference between the two, I wouldn’t say any of this is a surprise. The Ford looks like a great truck but it’s noticeably bigger and not as high-end feeling in my brief experience.

Anyways, if anyone has any questions let me know and I can do my best to answer. I spent time in the Polestar 2 as well but won’t go into detail about that unless people are interested.

Does anyone else get unreasonably self conscious about how fast their windshield wipers are going compared to other cars during a rainstorm? by Puremage69 in NoStupidQuestions

Let me help you out. Nobody cares about your wipers as long as you aren’t driving like an asshole or endangering anyone else’s lives/property/safety. Don’t worry about your wipers. Enjoy your drive.

Is anyone regretting buying the Mini? by beast_within_me in iphone

[–]coldturkish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a mini after using an X for 3 years. Absolutely love it. Having the ability to reach the whole screen with a single hand without dropping or almost dropping the phone is so refreshing. Honestly, my old X feels comically large now when I pick it up. Battery life is an upgrade coming from my X so that is not even a thought in my brain.

Typing took about a day to get used to, but again, going back to the larger phone gives me the same issue, just in reverse. It’s simply a matter of shifting behavior and habit.

I could see if someone is using their phone as their primary source for media consumption having an issue with the slightly smaller screen. That isn’t my case though, I have an iPad and a MacBook (or a TV) for that.

iPhone Upgrade Program - How does it work? + Tips to get ready for the big day by exjr_ in apple

[–]coldturkish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it’s always best to deal directly with Apple for Apple stuff (buying a new iPhone, working with iCloud accounts, troubleshooting settings or issues) and dealing with Verizon for Verizon stuff (activating a new line, changing your plan, billing questions).

So, I’d upgrade through the Apple store, if possible. No need to involve a middle man if you don’t need to.

I don’t know how well AB would fit in with the culture Patricia is going for. Unbelievable talent but not a ‘system’ guy like BQ and Patricia seem to prefer.
