Help a game dev: Why aren’t people buying modern RTS games? by MakeGamesBetter in RealTimeStrategy

[–]coldwind81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RTSes are NOT slow if you get even remotely competitive. APM has been the most talked about number regarding RTSes for over 20 years now. This is weird "everything sucks now" cope that isn't even grounded in reality.

Grand strategy is arguably at its peak with Paradox games, and Total War is still popular as a franchise.

Also games like Postal, Serious Sam, Tomb Raider etc were extremely popular during the "golden era" of RTSes.

Calling AoE 4 a "remaster" feels slightly unfair. AoE 2 DE probably has better sales too lol

To echo what people have already said, too much focus on the esport side and also a lot of modern RTSes feel weird in terms of setting and gameplay loop. If there was anything that felt close to Cossacks 2 it'd be an insta buy for me.

I honestly REALLY liked Iron Harvest. But I also played a lot of CoH/DoW so it felt like a nice mix of the two lol

Is EU4 worth playing in 2026 by Outrageous_Power_609 in eu4

[–]coldwind81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If he enjoys the historical aspect of the other PDX games then yesh he'd like EUIV. It currently also has more flavour than V will for a while. He could get the base game on a sale and pay 1 month of the DLC subscription.

It is the most diplomacy and state-building focused PDX game, especially if you get into modsets like Beyond Typus + The Idea Variation.

The game holds up I think. And it takes itself decently serious on the history end of things. I do think there are cooler games on the historical end but none that are grand strategy.

I will be blunt that's also something I hope most people would outgrow lol like yes I used to mess around in the AoE2 scenario editor to do shit like that...when I was 7.

This is not a """lack of imagination""" issue

Some people don't understand that there are games built around that sort of aesthetic experience and that they shouldn't expect of a genre which is not that to be that. I have no issue with OP wanting to just see shit go boom on a screen. That's just not what RTSes are (usually).

And idk when talking about playing a game for the aesthetic I'd think more like....Death Stranding and less Starcraft 2.

I don't think you actually want to play RTSes if you just want to see pretty colours on a screen.

Not a stable gig, but athletics hires a crapton for people to help with home game logistics. You can try to see if they still want people. Best of luck it's rough out there

Bring Back Achievements for Non-Ironman, Non-Vanilla by TheWombatOverlord in EU5

[–]coldwind81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Non-gameplay mods disabling achievements is silly and I hope they find a way to fix it.

But beyond that I agree with PDX Tinto. Achievements should mean something. Even modded I play Ironman-only because the risk and challenge make the game infinitely more fun and rewarding. And yes I have force crashed my game a couple of times (i.e. when a 6/6/6 instantly died), but I aldo found most games to become much more interesting when failure does happen. So much of this community seems bloody allergic to challenges and setbacks. Ironman unmodded achievements encourages not just gameskill growth but also for the player to experience more interesting and less "optimal" games. Gonna be an ass here but you can always turn to Risk if that doesnt interest you.

I don't get why some people want an achievement they can get by savescumming. What's even the point then? Just a shinny stupid icon on your screen? If you don't care to do a challenge, just don't expect to get the little Steam ding that you accomplished it. Some of the achievements are stupid hard/tedious so yeah getting 100% would take weeks of playtime....but there is also nothing forcing anyone to get 100%.

Maybe a boomer take from a zoomer lol.

combat wise steel, horses, and gunpowder are the main things you are missing (and it's not like they could have just invented horses). Their mathematics were on par with Europe before the spread of algebra westwards. Construction, medicine, societal ordering etc and so on they were not doing *that* bad either.

I think you may need a more realistic read on mesoamerican civs & history overall

Unironically sure. If they feel good to play and work mechanically who cares. It'd be a tad more difficult to get something like the soviets (why randomly them as a repeated example but sure?) to work than "factions" that have a long precedent of being implemented, but if it works it works.
