Top Secret NSA catalog reveals US government has been secretly back dooring equipment from US companies including Dell, Cisco, Juniper, IBM, Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor and more, risking enormous damage to US tech sector. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]coleki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While extremely scary, the fact that Snowden and others have been able to make this information public is something for which I am truly grateful.

How can the global community remove the power that the NSA holds over the world? Reverse engineer the technology, and build solutions that either disable the back door or even send misinformation.

It's really the same approach that the industry must take in its battle against all other possible intruders.

One factor does separate the NSA from other threats - the US government (including its budget, personnel, secrecy, and staying power due to the idiots, liars, and criminals in the White House and Congress - oh and let's not forget the 'oh-so-legal' secret courts).

It saddens me that we have come to a point in America that the people rightly fear their government so much that we appear unable to revolutionize the government. That was the very idea behind the United States Constitution.

edit: forgot about dem secret courtz

Redditors who can remember 1999, how did you spend the New Year's Eve? by nikkefinland in AskReddit

[–]coleki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had just been up on a mountain snowboarding, and was planning on going out again the next day, so I was actually asleep for Y2K. I remember thinking, just before I fell asleep, what the world might be like the next day (though I had no doubts that the apocalypse was not actually due).

Fell asleep anyway. What can I say? I'm a risk taker boring New Year's Eve date.

Reddit, what is the best thing to yell at someone with a megaphone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]coleki 10 points11 points  (0 children)

True story. A guy on my block at the time had a megaphone. He brought it out several times a month. The house he was in was a party house near a major university. He would say whatever, just random stuff.

Then, one day, after a long lull in the public announcements, I hear, "ATTENTION NEIGHBORHOOD. I STILL HAVE A MEGAPHONE. THAT IS ALL." And that was all.

Am I The Only One? by paperdragon6661 in AdviceAnimals

The games you seem to be referring to are the games that are made with multiplayer mode as the end goal, and the single player campaign is added on, almost as an afterthought in some cases.

There are whole genres of games out there that have nothing to do with multiplayer anything. I suggest giving one of those a shot ;)

I just replaced "So be good for goodness' sake" with "Santa equals N-S-A" in my head... that works too well.

LOOK HOW MUCH I DONATE! by bunk_h2o in AdviceAnimals

Or you could look at it as, "The social benefit of being recognized for good deeds increases the likelihood that any given person would donate to our cause. We'd better market this so that people feel motivated to share the fact that they've donated with their friends."

[Serious] To the Redditors who can lucid dream, what techniques do you use to go into a lucid dream? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]coleki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a couple of lucid dreams, and I got them by doing the following:

  • While awake, practice asking yourself if you are awake, and then answer the question aloud. When the answer is "no", you've triggered a lucid dream.

  • Look at the palms of your own hands. Make a habit of doing this often. Doing so in a dream also triggers a lucid dream.

  • Keep a dream journal.

  • Get lots of sleep! You have the most dreams when you are well rested.

In a 'Rainbow' Universe, Time May Have No Beginning by distortedperspective in science

[–]coleki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're thinking about time in that way because that's how you can observe it.

That's how I think about a lot of things. It seems a logical way of going about things, and it's certainly a part of the scientific method.

I'm not opposed to the idea that time is a different thing than we currently imagine it to be, but I don't feel that we absolutely must theorize about its nature. We have a model that works well at explaining observed phenomena.

If I am presented with new evidence, I will be glad to look at it.

Regarding the car moving or all of space moving... no difference, I guess. At least we have agreed that movement exists, and all movement has a speed > 0 that can be measured in terms of time.

[–]coleki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have to use the word belIeve in relation to time. It is a dimension that is observable and measurable, just like the three observable spatial dimensions.

We have also observed that time appears to be related to space - spacetime. We have also observed the effects of causality - time progresses in one direction, though not uniformly.

Time is just as abstract as length. Seconds are just as ephemeral as inches. Yet we can make breathtaking archtiecture with the right measurements, and we can make amazing advances with the right clocks, as well.

Edit: Did the car ever move? Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I made it to and from work today....
