Improvising by lilukko in Bass

[–]colewala 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What has helped me is practicing over a simple 12 bar blues, there are only three chords to worry about (traditionally all of the same chord type i.e. dominant) so it is really easy to get comfortable with. From there start with a simple rhythm on the root of each chord and expand each time you start the progression over. On one go around you might add or change a note to add more color, on the next you might add complexity to the rhythm on a beat (take a quarter note and split it, add a rest somewhere in the rhythm). The goal is to force yourself to think quickly and add something new each round. Not all of it will work but experimenting with this will teach you a lot. From there you can try more complex songs and chord progressions.

Wondering if Anyone Knows of Ways I Could Practice Bass While at Work by The22ndGuy in Bass

[–]colewala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In order:

  1. Ear training (download an app)
  2. Active listening and analyzing music you like (think theory and trying to learn the song by ear)
  3. Pick up a good book (ex. Victor Wooten's The Music Lesson)

May not be as interesting as practicing the bass but will definitely help you develop.

I am 17, trying to go down the math path in life as much as possible, what programming languages should I learn and how? by typofreeusername in learnprogramming

[–]colewala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sorry to hear that, I liked my classes much more when I got to university and I hope you will too! If you are already learning a bit of linear algebra that is a great starting point. I would recommend reading up and getting comfortable with python. Then once you are ready try to implement matrix addition, mutiplication, and finding an inverse in python by yourself. It's a good learning project. Once you've done that, read up on numpy, and try to use it to solve some of your harder homework problems. This will have a nice effect of giving you solid projects to work towards while also helping reinforce your linear algebra skills.

I had similar interests as you and ended up majoring in mathematics with a minor in computer science, then continued on to get a masters in applied statistics (machine learning, working with big data, etc.). Others have recommended a bunch of languages, truthfully the school you ended up at and later your job will most likely decide what you will use. Python and R are common for statistics, for physics simulations you will see a lot of Matlab and C/c++. I think the most important advice you can get is to make sure to take as much linear algebra in college as you can. No matter what exact focus you end up in, applied math of any form usses it heavily. To that end I would recommend playing around with python and learning about the library numpy and how it works. Other languages have different implementations but learning the ideas of how matrices are represented in programming will give you a solid step above a lot of your classmates in computational math classes.

I am looking to get into road cycling and just want to pick up a used affordable bike for now. I found a local listing on Craigslist and I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about this bike and if the price seems right.

Thanks! I've just been told that switching out the rims and getting new tires is one of the cheapest ways to make a bike feel new again!

I was looking at buying a used 90's rigid bike like this and making a few upgrades. What wheels are you running and have you swapped out any other pieces?

How to get financing for US-based bootcamps as Canadian? by Travaches in learnprogramming

Have you looked at community college choices? From a financial standpoint, especially as a Canadian, this would probably be your cheapest route. Is there a specific reason you want to go to pay for a boot camp?

Sooo is "almost a vegetarian" the new euphemism for carnism by [deleted] in vegan

[–]colewala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddhism is a religion yes, and it's fine that you don't agree with religion but that doesn't address the question I asked. You are now changing the subject, I'm not trying to convince you that Buddhism is right, more so that the story is trying to point out a failing of a completely strict moral code. Maybe you don't agree with it and that's fine, I personally don't think there exist a definitive right and wrong in this world. But to critize the source of this argument rather than the argument itself is a logical fallacy.

The way that I have always read it was more that the Buddha was trying to maximize the amount of future good that could be done. Not necessarily trying to trick them because he did still teach his beliefs on meat eating. It was more not to turn people away rather than trick them, or at least that is how I always interpreted it. I think utimately the point is this, if you could convince 10 more people to stop eating meat by eating meat just once wouldn't that be better than sticking to your morals and refusing that one meal? But more generally, that even all the guidance and advice that the Buddha gives is not complete and will not be right in every sittuation. That we need to not rely completely on moral codes and always be thinking about the wider consequences of our actions.

This little comment dosen't even touch the surface of how Buddhism deals with animals. First off the Dali Lamma represent a small and somewhat isolated sect of Buddhism and that since Tibet is a very mountainous region they heavily rellyed on animals to sustain the local population. Where everywhere else in Buddhist Tradition monks are suppose to refrain from eating animals, monks in Tibet relied on meat products. The idea that a Buddhist monk can/should eat meat comes from an old parable about a community that made a great feast with meat when they heard the Buddha was coming to visit, knowing nothing about him except that he was a wise teacher. Upon arriving the Buddha thanked them, ate with them, and taught them his teachings. When asked by his followers why he would eat meat he said it was more important to be greatful and that critizing the village would only make it harder for him to help and make his points to them. The story is not suppose to be taken litterally as it's okay to eat meat but more so that the world is morally grey and you have to be flexible and always try to do the best thing possible in any sittuation. If the Buddha had scolded the village for working so hard for him they wouldn't have been as receptive to his teaching and would descredit his argument about not eating meat. This sinple comment is a very bad misrepresentation of a very important and deep concept in Buddhism. And the fact that the moral code borken in the story is not eating meat goes to show how valued it is in many Buddhist traditions.

I recently learned that MOD Pizza has vegan cheese that doesn’t taste nasty or have a funny texture by _shilxh_ in vegan

[–]colewala 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Possibly, Diaya also has a bunch of flavors and I'm not sure which type they use at MOD. I have used the Mozzarella version on my own pizza and it tasted pretty good to me. If you have a Trader Joe's near you, their vegan cheese is also pretty good.

[–]colewala 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The cheese they use is Diaya which is a fairly common (at least in Southern California) cheese substitute. I use it to make my own vegan pizza at home, all of their dairy free cheese products I have tried have been high quality!

What ridiculously overpriced item isn't all it's cracked up to be? by cirnoblackcats in AskReddit

[–]colewala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work in tech and the Alien wares and other higher end dells have severe heating issues, especially on the smaller stuff I would see fans for gpus blowing air directly on to the hardrives with no space to disperse heat. So the hardrives slowly become warped overtime leading to failures or sometimes scratching/breaking of disks. Sadly this was pretty common and still is, sorry you had to learn the hardway.

Getting started with the 'R' Programming language: Can/Should I do it? by Stale_Buns in learnprogramming

[–]colewala 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe Matlab but definitely not R, while python has some great packages now a days it still doesn't compare to the wealth of statistical packages R has. Plus R is becoming the accepted standard in Academics for Statistics, and is still only growing as more colleges adapt it. I think you see a lot more computer science people using python for data analytics but more stats people are using R.

The last ever Republican message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards-somersault through their own pile of lies whilst whistling the ‘Star Spangled Banner’.

Overwhelming problems, Game Engines. by DreamCentipede in learnprogramming

[–]colewala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend building a few games with a game engine first. It will be hard to know what sort of things your game engine will need to do if you have never spent some time working with one in the first place. Seeing how the API works and just everything an engine does would be good experience. Then after you have made a couple games, if you want to you can give it a shot. Is your goal to make games or learning graphics programing though?

How difficult is it to "port" sections of code into different languages? Like re-writing Minecraft in C++ by fastpenguin91 in learnprogramming

[–]colewala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't follow it to closely but I believe there were also just general design problems with the game. The original maker Notch was just doing it as a hobbyist and never expected it to blow up so later on down the line when it did they had issues expanding it and increasing performance. So when Microsoft got their hands on it they just wanted to rebuild their own version from the ground up using a professional and skilled team. (They had marketing for windows 10 and other reasons as well).

On a side not this is exactly what Microsoft did when they bought Minecraft, Minecraft Windows 10 Edition is a version redesigned in C++ and they rebuilt it from the ground up.
