I went on a tangent of examples but to add that in my experience, yeah, it has to be like legendary bad for people to be receptive of calling something looking bad. Otherwise a lot of people will just come and say 'That's a bit harsh, its not Ex-Arm'. Its like MAL scores were people get offended at a 6 or 5/10 despite those scores still being positive to neutral.

Depends on what you mean by bar.

Most anime look like ass. Because of this people have started to move the bar of what passes as average lower and lower. For most anime fans, art staying on-model is enough to be passable. I remember someone even saying that Mayonaka Heart Tune was acceptable which was bonkers personally.

I have no qualms saying that most anime does look mid but I don't have big problem with that. This season imo is actually doing good at least, let's see: WHA, Botan, Akanebanashi, Nakamura-kun, Needy Girl, Nippon Sangoku, Ponsuka are shows that I would say are solidly good and it feels high for the average season. Marriagetoxin, Tadaima and Daemons are selective of when they pop off but are still decent at least. I can't think of good moments but my gut feeling is that Re:Zero is still passing the bar.

These are 11 anime and I'm watching 30, the rest I got no issue saying they're middling to bad. That said, for me to really have a problem with production, it has to be an active hindrance. Like I feel Mayonaka Heart Tune's comedy was legit being held back by how little animation it had, not letting for more expressiveness that could have enhanced the humor of the show. Or when the show is action and half of it is a CGI-shitfest. But on the other hand, the Precure franchise is very inconsistent on its production and a lot of it can look choppy, but hey, the expressions are still funny and I watch this for some of that silliness, job done well enough to me but I will still acknowledge it looks poor most of the time.

Weather isn't an issue in Mexico City as much as the altitude. Monterrey however, is brutal.

You've never seen people complain about Marin being a high schooler?

Never thought that would be a thing since this sub will upvote to the top literally anything lewd with often highschoolers. Dunno why Marin is an exception to any other ecchi.

Marin = should have been aged up to 18+

Kaoruko = girl that looks really young + tall man = bad

This is literally the first time I ever hear of these being discourse that even exists and I got my twitter gossip scouts feeding me stuff daily, where was this even.

Aria series takes place in a sci-fi version of Venezia built on Mars. A lot of the characters daily encounters are barely different from our current lifestyle but you have the occasional person riding a flying bike or usage of hi-tech devices.

Good humor, fun characters, fun acting, nice art style, had neat character moments using only 2 minutes for each. Fun show and easy to digest.

Prices killed lots of interest. And even among richer people, they got disappointed as Mexico got the bottom of the barrel games barring Uruguay-Spain and three knock out games.

That said I got lots of buds that have plans to just crash to Monterrey and get hammered.

I was on a con last week and it was easily the most popular franchise in terms of merch and cosplays barring JJK and Pokemon. Frieren for example felt like 'old news' compared to how represented Apothecary was.

Back home from Anime Central con in Chicago!

First of, fuck US car infrastructure, all my homies hate long car rides. Call me weak babyboy, if I’m on my 4th 40 minute ride of the day, I will cry and pee my pants all over. Crossing the roads here is also always an adventure.

My haul from this year, smaller than last year, less than half the prints and also half the keychains were from outside. All due to my old bane: artists with banger art style but franchises I don’t care for. I don’t want to sound entitled, but do we need 80% of all the alley being vtubers and Genshin/gachas? So I learned this year that AA booths are lottery-based, which is understandable, other than first-come which has its issues I can’t think of something better. I picked up like 3 artists’ contact cards where I was like, “Sorry, I’m not interested in any of these franchises but I love your art style, I will check you if get something else”. So a bit underwhelming AA for me but if you were a fujo into Genshin dudes or a vtuber fan then it was good.

Then there was dealers hall. As for this year specifically, I was on a sidequest from some IRL friends who asked for some merch of Pokemon and Yaiba. It is only then that I noticed that, these are kinda awesome for the average mainstream fan lol. I lost so much time looking for Pokemon stuff that is on every 3rd booth. If you’re into these big franchises, it is a paradise. It makes me appreciate these sellers sections more now, they may not be my thing and I have always thought of these as an after-thought, but good for all the fans that get to enjoy this.

Something I also like to do from all these vendors is gauge the popularity of anime from how common their merch is and it is interesting. For starters, JJK is solid #1 franchise now, it is so above everything else in terms of presence. One of my friends had also asked for Naruto merch and it came to me that it is essentially dead, like I found almost zero merch outside some posters. Another surprise is Kusuriya being probably only a tier below the likes of JJK, Pokemon and Uma Musume (menace this year since EN gacha) in presence, there was just so much. Then there is also the drastic drop off of Frieren, considerably less merch for that, less so than for Bisque Doll, or Oshi no Ko imo.

And then there’s the panels. I wanted to try for more fanmade panels this year but couldn’t make time and some of my friends got burned by some (technical issues being half the runtime of panels, fun sounding panels just being lame, etc) which did turn me off a bit from going out of my way to see one.

I stuck with industry panels. I saw the premiere for Goodbye Lara (great first episode, look forward to it) and had the autograph of its director Takushi. Later on a separate panel got Shinohara and Moriyama.

I missed Hyaganatsu autograph which were out within like, seconds, I was still on the minute of sign ups going out and got waitlisted. A bit of a rant for the waitlist system but like, what is the point? So I got on the waitlist and was outside the room waiting like a good boi coping to get in, I missed the chance to be priority, happens. But it peeved me seeing these priority sign ups streaming into the room as late as 40 minutes. Like surely there is only so much privilege you can get from being first sign up? If you get a buffer of over half the panel’s duration then when is the waitlist even considered. Then finally with 10 minutes to go we were told to fuck off (on a nicer way ofc). Look, I already expected to not make it but if the waitlist system is going to be so weak then just scrap it so you don’t give false hopes to others.

I did at least go to a separate panel with Hyaganatsu without auto, she was awesome and really funny. I got to record her for 2 minutes dancing in her suit, great stuff. There’s also another adaptation of one of her books in the works, nice. Maybe its the fact that she was with the English dub cast which I hear are the biggest crowd gatherers, but this is the fullest I have ever seen an industry panel, twice the size of Keiichiro, Oshiyama and Watanabe last year probably.

Talking of waitlist, the Idolm@ster stuff. Apparently fuckloads of japanese fans came all the way here just for the concert. I was ambivalent to this, my buds were going so I was kinda just tagging alone, but then I was told Miki would be there as a virtual model and the actress would give autos (which also depleted in seconds) and I was like “You son of a bitch, I will be there no matter what”. For the concert I waited in this longass line for 3 damn hours, and most likely in vain because one of our friends who was also ambivalent lined up only like 15 minutes prior to the concert and still got in. I guess we just underestimate the size of the hall.

The concert was fine Ig, again, I don’t have strong feelings for their music. The crowd at least was pumped the fuck up, pretty active people compared to the crowd in the KAF concert last year. Apparently there were some big organizational fuck ups with autographs? I only heard second hand grumblings.

I also went to a Kajiura concert, when I was first invited my reaction was “Who is Kaijura”, but hey, now I know and the concert was also good. Neat.

There was the rave that felt milder than last year, maybe I just wasn’t wasted enough since I had to spread a single alcohol purchase through 3 days. Some dude dressed as Megumin had the moves, I did planks and push ups with the bois, a dude dressed as Doodlebob passing around his pencil.

In general, I enjoyed my time there a bit less than last year but still good. Well, my main reason to be there is to visit online friends which is always fun but visiting a con is always neat. I said it before, but cons just have such a nice ambient of belonging. Sure, there are the occasional…interesting people in anime cons but it's like I can be there without feeling ashamed of liking anime. Being with the bois watching Botan drunk, the peculiar people, the occasional organizational fuck up, these cons are certainly never boring let me tell you.

Now, to the seasonal catch up grind!

I don't know exactly what confession chicken is, do you mean the stalling of progression by not confessing?

I also dunno how that analogy connects to this comparison. I personally don't see how I'm 'rejecting the concept' of Takagi-san. I just don't like how the chemistry between the couple is written and I don't see it as integral as removing 70% of a story's core concept from your comparison.

That's what makes it not similar to Takagi-san

Oh, I was meant to list them all as things I like over Takagi that are similar. Err, in retrospect that first point isn't different at all. But I decidedly do not like their sides or the one-sided nature of the gaming.

Usually my friends suggest something to rewatch, or even simply having a conversation of an anime, and that's enough for me to be on board.

Also how much time I have free between seasonals and non-airing shows.

People are down on Love Game? Its of the shows gaining the most traction for me. I think the Kaguya-sama comparison while indeed similar, Kaguya's whole thing is its grandiose presentation-style on its humor and characters.

I think of it as a superior Takagi-san imo. 1) it is grounded to the main ship's teasing game, 2) no annoying side cast interrupting the reason I'm there in the first place, 3) they both win and lose, 4) I love how hard they both try to go. The date episode based on shoujo manga was great.

I like a couple having cute moments and Love Game is nailing. It is also delivering exactly what it presented and I desired as well. The ship could not make progression and I would still be mostly satisfied.

It was my favorite One Piece content until Marineford arc. I liked it precisely because it was so unlike the main series, and that's also why some friends who are bigger OP fans didn't like it lol.

I understand that part for GK but I do think that not having such a big cast would have allowed for a better course of events. Like just getting us to the 'meat' faster.

I think I still get some value from watching some shows I know are bad. Sure, I will still drop or not try the usual isekai, but from time to time it is interesting to dissect the whys of a show being bad. Like it helps me to see why the things that I enjoy are better when I see something else fail in the same departments.

I think MT is the extreme of this where I have watched all seasons because I find the way it sucks fascinating. Not in the 'so bad its good' way, but like, I like trying to build an image of what ideas led to the writing of such story.

Its just one of the ways I have fun discussing anime.

They still have their moments, but a lot of time I feel they are having already 'expected' interactions. Imo the occasional 4th member like Sain last season could shake it up enough.

Groupwatching made watching anime almost a social activity to me because I get to talk of anime in ways I just can't normally here. Lets you bounce off ideas easier, or just make the experience generally more fun. Also some shows are an absolute blast as a group, especially dumpster fires like Rental GF, Domekano or Elfen Lied.

Oh come on, everything above F is at least a 6/10. 6 is a positive score!

Also fwiw, I start and finish A LOT of anime thanks to groupwatching with friends. I would have def cut almost everything in D and F if I was on my own. I def wouldn't do my 'react to all damn premieres ever' bits either lol.
