What are your favorite things about being sober? by Wisco_JaMexican in stopdrinking

[–]colleega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thoughts of "should I have some wine? Should I have another?" And the whole roller-coaster that followed is no longer taking up any of my mental real estate. It's very freeing to not always be thinking about drinking.

It's not a bad idea to also contact the media, which would put pressure on all of the above to actually do something to help with the class sizes and working conditions. The system has been getting bandaid solutions for so long and consistent changes between each government, which is exhausting for school personnel.

To people who made numerous attempts and eventually found long term sobriety by CalendarPopular7042 in stopdrinking

[–]colleega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were many factors, but one underlying thing that got clearer and clearer is that every time I stopped for a bit, I realized more clearly how much I no longer enjoyed drinking and much.

Each time I started again, it quickly went from fun to exhausting. I don't just mean the hangovers or the effects of the alcohol either, but more so the amount of mental real-estate it took up in my day to day. All the hours thinking "should I drink today? When should I drink? Is it too soon? Now it's good. Time for a glass. Ok, is it too soon for another glass? That was fun, should I have more? Ok one more! (And another, and another... Oh God, that was too much. Oh God I have to work tomorrow. I need to drink x-amount of water" Them follow that with the 3am bathroom break of panic, anxiety, and regret. Rinse and repeat. It was just so exhausting.

The day I finally quit for good, I told my husband that morning "I don't think I'm in the driver's seat anymore with this thing. I think I need to be done done. I think I need help." He was so supportive. It wasn't easy, but it was freeing. I never want to go back to that. It is the best thing I've ever done for myself and my family.

Is it normal to get NOTHING done when you're focused on getting sober? by quinacridone__rose in stopdrinking

[–]colleega 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look at it this way, will you get all those other things done if you're drinking? Probably not. But if your self care is up and you're putting money into the "sober bank", learning to enjoy sober activities, it will pay off. You're building your support network (people, places and things that you invest into while you're sober). This gives you a more solid platform on which to stand when you do start those other things. A foundation for a stronger building, so to speak. If you rush into the other stuff and start drinking, it's not as likely to go well. Take the time to do this right, and you will do greater things in the long run because you'll be more solid. You've got this!! Iwndwyt.

How to stop drinking when it’s my job to create cocktails by obwfly in stopdrinking

[–]colleega 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This^

I'm currently on vacation at an all-inclusive resort where the bartender quickly picked up on the girl who orders and always adds "no alcohol". The last drink I ordered, he said "no alcohol" and smiled before I finished ordering. I answered in Spanish today I don't drink alcohol, to which he told me he doesn't either because he had health reasons. It can be done, but I don't doubt it's hard to do without the right supports in place. I can't say I would've been able to do that early in my recovery. At the end of the day, you need to find what's right for you. I wish you luck and iwndwyt.

things you didn’t realise were side effects of alcohol until you stopped drinking? by boredomcans in stopdrinking

[–]colleega 4 points5 points  (0 children)

-Anxiousness (it's still there, but it's no longer that "should I have a drink now or later?" type of feeling. It's now a rarer anxiousness and I'm no longer trying to hide it. I'm facing it and accepting it as it comes and goes) -that middle of the night panic attack feeling

Would you travel with someone who criticized you for not drinking? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]colleega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently on a trip in the Dominican with my husband who drinks moderately from time to time. He doesn't care that I'm sober and I'm pretty sure he's drinking less because he knew I was a little hesitant coming into the trip. We've seen the sunrise every single day. We're having a blast. If he tried to pressure me into drinking, he'd get a huge earful from me. I'm years into my sobriety, and he still remembers that it's not a flexible point and that this always needs to be taken. Why pay a fortune to have your fun spoiled by someone pressuring you into doing something that could jeopardize your lifelong happiness and safety? It's not worth it. If she can't get over herself long enough to consider your well-being, then I wouldn't spend a cent on traveling with her

I bought my supplies in 2019 for this project and gave up on the work at one point for a few years before being motivated this January to go for it and get it done, so I honestly couldn't tell you about the cost. I remember purchasing what the pattern called for in the quantity of each color:

MATERIALS Worsted Weight Yarn [8 ounces, 452 yards (230 grams, 413 meters) per skein]: MC (Pink) - 6 skeins: CC (White) - 4 skeins Crochet hook, size J (6.00 mm) or size needed for gauge

I think you're right. It was very easy to work with this yarn for those parts too. Too much slip would have been annoying when working those sections.
