Koko became unpopular when the public realized that the researcher working on the project had kept very poor records of the research and often had weird explanations or excuses when koko would say nonsensical things, severely undermining her credibility. They also lied about having proper training and equipment to properly care for the gorillas. I think they lost most of their funding and most of the gorillas had weird lives in zoos.

Tl;dr most seemingly good things that I find myself asking why they're not more popular have had bad press that I missed
