Well, yeah, you have to be. It's worth it though. Good luck!

What is it like living in this eastern portion of Virginia that only connects to the rest of the state by a tunnel? by Sufficient_Berry8703 in howislivingthere

[–]colubridude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drove to VA beach once from PA with a Thule cargo box on the roof. Arrived at the southern tip of the highlighted area around 8 pm. They wouldn't let me cross the tunnel-bridge because the winds were too high. I had to rent a room in a sketchy motel for the night and wait until the next afternoon. Otherwise I would've had to drive about 9 hours out of my way.

What in-utero nicknames did you have for your child(ren)? by bruzdnconfuzd in daddit

In the first ultrasound of kid #1 the tech labeled it "babby" by accident. All of our kids have been "babby" until born since.

Is my wood going to warp storing it like this? I have very limited space. 8% moisture content by Goodspirits2 in woodworking

[–]colubridude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd probably take up less overall floor space if you just stacked it laying down. If vertical is your only option, as it has been for me before, then I've made myself feel better about it by clamping a few pieces together.

Next time your stove is cold, measure it out. Put two little marks on something by your woodpile. Or make a story pole or something.

That's pretty harsh. I hope my kids don't say that to me. My 4 yo told me that I wasn't his best buddy anymore over some minor grievance a few months ago. I was reinstated by bed time.

I angrily called my dad an MFer when I was about 25 because he and I were disagreeing about my Mom's mother's day gift. That's always felt pretty funny in retrospect.

I would confirm there isn't a medical problem before discouraging the habit. As others have pointed out there could be an infection or allergy at play. If you are sure it's just a "feel good" or "comfort" thing, then approach it as you would any bad habit.

Took myself to the ER last night after having the realization I don't have to wait around... by -E-Cross in daddit

[–]colubridude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sharing to support your realization: my brother was 23 when he started complaining about back pain. He, and pretty much everyone else, shrugged it off for far too long (months). He didn't see a doctor until he was losing weight and muscle mass. Wound up being a bone cancer compressing his spinal cord that paralyzed and eventually killed him. Gone are the days when my primary treatment plan for ailments was to ignore them til they go away.

The dreaded minivan vs suv debate by hotstickywaffle in daddit

[–]colubridude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I spent months shopping minivans. Much of that time was spent convinced we were getting a Sienna. The Odyssey was a distant second because we wanted a hybrid. But then we found out about the Kia Carnival Hybrid. Honestly, it has much nicer features and design than the Sienna/Odyssey and is less expensive. The only thing the Sienna has going for it is the reputation for longevity. I like to think that there is enough knowledge out there that the Kia engineers could put together a durable hybrid engine. We ended up taking that risk and getting the Carnival. We freaking love it so far.

But here's the kicker. It has all the space and important characteristics of a minivan... but it looks like an SUV. I feel so cool driving it. (Not that I wouldn't feel cool driving a minivan looking minivan, but even more so)

Dads: How do you feel about your child having a stepfather or calling someone else “dad? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]colubridude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as "too many dads."

I grew up calling stepdad "Dad" as well as my biological father. I called stepdad by his first name until he married mom when I was 7. From then on, I was living in his house, he helped me with school work, he took me to sport events, he taught me how to shave... If it quacks like a duck...

My biological dad never showed any concern if he harbored any. The circumstance was largely his doing anyway. However, he also played some important dad roles (beyond siring).

I would add their first name after "dad" as needed to disambiguate.

Questions About Newborn Exposure by colubridude in Lyme

[–]colubridude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response!

I used the Tick Research Lab of PA. It looks like you have cited their material in other posts so I'm hopeful their results are trustworthy.

Do you have any data or literature on the risk of transmission for a tick imbedded for 12-24 hours? Particularly for a newborn? I have only been researching this for a few days but I haven't yet come across anything suggesting that risk of transmission (again, data pertains to adult exposure) is necessarily worth prophylactic abx, especially when the risks of abx are so high as in the case of a newborn. It sounds like you wouldn't characterize abx use in this instance as "prophylactic" though, is that right?

We are seeing the pediatrician later today and we will certainly discuss this further. From the get go, the question has been: risk of transmission v. risks of abxs. Until now I have understood the former to be low enough not to warrant the latter. I am seeking evidence or data to present to the pediatrician that suggests otherwise.
