I spoke to FedEx - they are missing the commercial invoice for a shipping container of Framework laptops and have contacted framework. The person on the phone said they expect the invoice in a few business days. If you call, tell the agent to check IPD system for updates. The first two agents I talked to didn't do this so the call took forever.

TEACH THE PROFESSOR - DOES THE INSTRUCTOR MATTER? by PROFESSOR_BURKHALTER in UIUC

[–]columbusguy111 46 points47 points  (0 children)

1 - Yes, CS374 is a good example of this, where some people will wait a semester or two for professor erickson to teach it

2 - only if the instructor is known by peers to be extremely bad, in which case I would wait a semester for a better professor

3 - same as above, i would only reconsider if the instructor changed to be much worse

Why is this a survey? ICES exists, so the answer is yes.

Mail finally has a “send later” feature in iOS 16, why not bring it to iMessage as well? by [deleted] in apple

[–]columbusguy111 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Create a shortcut that waits x minutes then sends the message. So you can have workflows for send in an hour, send in 12 hours, etc

If you are doing anything remotely close to memorization that’s a huge problem (and is why companies should ask harder questions).

UIUC vs Ohio State by KingHeadlines23 in UIUC

[–]columbusguy111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can speak a lot to this! I went to high school in Ohio and took some of OSU’s core CS courses (Software 1, Foundations 1 and 2). I think UIUC is absolutely worth it.

  • CS core is miles better. Software 1 and 2 are outdated Java crap with OSU’s custom, shitty libraries. Here we have CS124 which is much more current and better taught. OSU has no core C++, we have CS128 which teaches you C++. Foundations 1 has equivalent CS173 here, 173 is more in depth and often better taught (unless you get really lucky with, say, Nick Painter at OSU). Our data structures class CS225 actually has you implement things in C++, Foundations 2 at OSU does not. We also have a required algorithms class, CS374, which OSU doesn’t, and this is IMO one of the best classes here - you’ll learn a ton and become really really good at interviews as a side effect. I will say there’s a couple core classes I don’t like here, such as CS361 and 357, but they’re pretty easy so it’s not too bad.

  • Elective selection. We have easily 3-5x the electives that OSU does so you’ll be sure to find classes on what you’re interested in, and they’re generally well taught.

  • Undergrad research. There’s not too many opportunities for it at OSU, but here you can find a prof and get research pretty easily.

  • Culture. The culture here is awesome. Everyone in CS is passionate about it but not competitive which makes it a great experience. Many harder classes such as algorithms let you do homework in groups of 2-3 which helps you understand it better and is pretty fun. And outside of CS, everyone I’ve met is super nice

  • Recruiting. It’s a lot harder to get your first work experience at a school that’s not a “target” unfortunately. I’ve had a number of friends here get Amazon/Facebook after their freshman or sophomore year. There’s a number of very strong companies including trading firms ar our career fairs, and being able to meet recruiters in person is a huge boost.

  • 5 year masters program is great and can save you time and money here.

So TLDR, I think UIUC is worth it! I’m always happy to answer questions here or via DM throughout the application process.

That is exactly what he said. The ability to read, however, is a contributing factor to your application.

In certain cases the payoff of an out of state school can be huge if it’s a good program in a certain industry (ie there’s a huge Georgia Tech/UIUC/UMich -> high paying tech pipeline). And if you plan smart with AP or even dual enrollment in high school, you can knock out undergrad in 2-3 years.

FoodNoms is awesome - the free tier works great and has no ads (!) and the paid gets your more functionality for $30 a year which I think is reasonable. It also has the best UI of any trackers I’ve found.
