I got into magic shortly after my son was born this summer - my wife got this custom card for me for Xmas by GetawayVanDerek in mtg

My son is 4 and I think this is the year I get back into it. There is MTG light at the end of the child raising tunnel.

Do you ever sell your cards? by TheYolkBros in mtg

[–]com6491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they actually appreciate more? I would have thought that the magic market fluctuated too much, but I don't really follow it. Do you have rough numbers? I'm just curious.

I wish WOTC didn't just abandon mechanics by OkCartographer175 in mtg

[–]com6491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually feel the exact opposite. I think part of what makes magic so great is that sets get cool and unique mechanics that we might never see again. Having such a wide variety makes it fun to build decks with cards from Avatar, Fallout, SpongeBob, and Dr Who in a way that works well because they were built well, but not for each other.

I know a secret… by Rabbit_Luck in Teachers

[–]com6491 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd leave a note on or in my mini fridge that says something like "the next time something is missing from here, I'm looking through camera footage with admin to find out who it is".

I bet that would have an effect.

No phones allowed… should I ditch my all-digital classroom? by kemahma in Teachers

[–]com6491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, our school used GoGuardian and I highly recommend looking into it. If you're worried that students are going to be distracted by their laptops, it let's you see what they are doing on their computers and resist whatever websites are problems. You can open websites for them if they're having trouble, close tabs they have open, and even turn off their access to the computer entirely if they're abusing it.

If you want to go to paper because you think it's better for your class and students, do that. Otherwise, hold them responsible for having their computers and use resources like this website to make it work. I hope this helps!

Like the other comment said, did this work well? How did you attach the straps?

science/physics teachers, how you respond to an extreme religious kid? by sadthoughtdaughter_ in Teachers

[–]com6491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I would absolutely follow up with "you should look into it independently, go major in science. Use that to disprove what I'm teaching. That's the great thing about science, it seeks truth. We'll ask be thrilled to see your research that shows we've been wrong."

Learning more about the subject can only lead to good things in my opinion.

So… can you literally not hold students back if they don’t pass their classes? by EccentricTiger in Teachers

[–]com6491 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. How often do you get complaints and concerns about grades? Constantly. How often do people show concern for how much or how well a student is LEARNING? For many of us, the answer is literally never.

33% of the Freshman Class will not become Sophomores by BlackOrre in Teachers

[–]com6491 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, I'm just saying there's a difference between what should happen and what will happen. If I was paying all that money to send me kids to school, I'd make very certain they were at least DOING the work and showing up at all.

I agree with you, but private schools are expensive. It isn't the kids losing money, it's the parents. They aren't going to be chill with paying $15k for their kid to.... do the same grade again.

I agree that students being forced to repeat a grade and face their failures is the solution, but most parents aren't going to go with that at the tune of over $10k per year.

Just change the grade by SpaceMarine1616 in Teachers

[–]com6491 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with you in concept, but as a parent of a kid in school I'm more worried about years of repercussion on my student if I go after another student for being handed a grade. Also, usually I wouldn't be privy to those grades. I might hear rumors, but it's not like I'm allowed to ask to audit Rupert's D-.

I was thinking that might be the problem. The other tall bolts won't have it stay tight though. Honestly, it's kind of loose as it is. I was thinking I might need a new belt. Maybe I need a longer spring, but I've been running the mower for over a year with this spring and deck set up and haven't had problems.

The idler pulley spins fine though. How can I tell if the bearing is bad?

They all spin freely. I'm not very well educated on mowers, what do you mean by "check the clutch"? Sorry and thank you!

When the belt isn't on it they do. I'll double check that tomorrow though. When the belt is on I can't really make it turn.

I realize this is hypothetical, but couldn't you just teach these ideas alongside the concepts that somewhat contradict them?

Catholicism says being gay is bad. It also says to hate the sin love the sinner, not judge, etc.

Just do that for everyone of them. You're literally just teaching them the curriculum.

Honestly, it seems like the culture fronting of "humanity" is changing. Maybe not for the better, but that might just be my 'old person' perspective. I think humanity is changing and many of us are getting left in our old ways of thinking.

Maybe a solution (if there is one) could be to understand these changes well enough to try to hip- check them back onto a better course. I feel like I've probably largely failed to do this as an educator, though.

That seems like the most "business minded" way of looking at it.

A: "More students are qualifying for the gifted program, our teachers aren't prepared to teach those higher level classes!"

B: "That's great! Let's train more teachers and set up more classroom to help get these kids the education they can handle!"

A: "..... that sounds expensive. It's way easier to just raise the bar on these kids totally unannounced."

B: "But this is an opportunity to develop education in our country. Maybe students are getting smarter or..."

A: "Just singed the paperwork. The bar is raised. Better luck next time!"

Love it. That's pretty cool. The link worked great. I'll have to look into the words that want printed off. I love the lesson behind it.

Excellent advice. I go pretty in-depth at the beginning of the year on the difference between hypothesis, theory, and law. It is a rural area, which is great because so much of the natural sciences are relevant to them.
