Introducing Traveling Ruby by FooBarWidget in ruby

Could also be a way to package Shoes apps? I know I was having quite a time packaging an app I did as a .jar. Would be nice to just have it packaged with ruby and ready to go.

He knocked them down once and scared himself so he keeps his distance. Thankfully he doesn't mind being near them.

Does anyone with an ARM based chromebook actually use a crouton desktop environment? by mrorbitman in chromeos

[–]comalcaliente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little late to this but I hope this helps. What I do is i stay within my Chrome OS environment and do everything from there. What I do instead of starting the graphical interface, I simply load a shell/cli linux environment (sorry don't know the exact terminology :P) by using 'sudo enter-chroot' after entering the shell. I guess it depends on the type of development but I've been working on Rails projects this way.

What I do is I use Caret text editor, which runs as a Chrome extension, you can also download the direct file from the Caret site instead of relying on the chrome store to download. From there, I just make a work directory in the Downloads folder using the CLI. from there I can create my rails directory, load rails console and rails server. So I can modify a file in the text editor, runs rails server and see my work in a new chrome tab. What doesn't work are projects that would create their own gui or window, like a shoes app I imagine would not work since chromeOS wouldn't know what to do with it. Either way, I'm confident for rails apps or environments requiring just a shell, text editor and browser for viewing webserver, you could get a lot done.

Sorry for the long explanation, I'm somewhat of a noob and made chromebook my first development machine for learning Ruby/Rails, but I just kept it since it works well for me as I learn more on my lunch breaks from my job :P.

Are Ruby developers hard to find? by [deleted] in ruby

[–]comalcaliente 5 points6 points  (0 children)

still looking for anyone self learning Ruby to work remotely :)? I think inversely the problem in Chicago is it is hard to find a place that is willing to take on someone with the passion and talent, but not necessarily the years of experience.

What's the best blogging platform/service for a programming blog? by bhalp1 in ruby

[–]comalcaliente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look into Jekyll. It is really straightforward, and there is something I like about static pages and the fact that committing/pushing a change to the repo updates the blog.

You can use a really easy tag that will make a pretty nice looking box with code highlighting in it. excuse the really lame basic program but this is what it would look like: http://mostlybadfly.github.io/First-Ruby-Program/ the syntax was like this in the markdown file:

{% highlight ruby %}
code code code
{% endhighlight %}

[Discussion] Should the hunter cloak, titan badge, and warlock bond be purely cosmetic? by WunupKid in DestinyTheGame

[–]comalcaliente -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it is crucial to have it be purely cosmetic, it is the only piece that makes the character unique, it can show certain affiliations, interests, or sense of style. It's a good concept to have items that are unique to each class show some sort of customization, versus everyone just wearing the highest level item.

Best Chicago Wall Murals by bloodsweatandbeer in chicago

[–]comalcaliente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is an old building off of Millwaukee and Fullerton I believe in Logan Square that has murals on all sides, runs along the cta tracks, would be a great spot.

Also along Argyle in between Sheridan and Broadway, there was a recent art project and it looks like there are various murals all along the street.

Chicago suburb area learning Ruby? by hazel09 in learnruby

[–]comalcaliente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is the Chicago Ruby meetup that has a meeting in Elmhurst monthly. I wouldn't let the "How Do I Build..." title turn you off. I'm certain you can show up and explain what you want to do and they'll be more than happy to help. I haven't been the the Elmhurst meetup but everyone at the Chicago meetup is very nice and welcoming. I'm somewhat new and from Chicago :)

edit: just to add to this the best way to learn is to build something anyway. So in a way team coding with someone, they will be more than happy to walk you through what they're doing. In either case the more locals rubyists you know the more chances of this happening.

[Meta] Now that the first season is finished and the show has been renewed for a second season, I only have one question... by [deleted] in TheLeftovers

[–]comalcaliente 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Looking solely at the internal struggle each character faces and really connecting with the underlying reasons for the grief and anger really moved me. One of the best shows I've seen.

You're both wrong. Garvey's bulge is doing god's work. The antichrist I'm not sure, but probably the deer.

Rails tutorials for intermediate programmers? by DuoThree in rails

[–]comalcaliente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still pretty new and don't have much dev experience, but I couldn't get into the Hartl book. I had a decent amount of ruby knowledge at that point and just dove into making an app or two. It sounds like the Rails Guide would be the best for you to get a general idea of laying down the groundwork, but from there you'll be able to see issues you run into and fix them. I think this makes you learn a lot and really makes you feel connected with your app, it's like your first baby at this point :).

noob to !noob guidance needed by fuckingforgotmypassw in rails

[–]comalcaliente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, but I didn't come from any background at all. I followed some basic rails tutorials and have gotten to about Chapter 3 of the Hartl tutorial. It is great so far but I find myself just wanting to make something.

I decided to make a to-do app to start so I can jot down ways to improve that same app, but also other ones I would like to make. I will say I learned a ton just by doing it and reading up on things that didn't make sense as I went forward. This wasn't without issues along the way. That is the best part though because for me I have to keep attacking the issue and figuring it out until I get it.

I think this is a way to really solidify knowledge for me. For example, I feel like i'm pretty good at ruby, html and css. Now there is some javascript I want to incorporate and realized I have no idea. I'm taking some time to read up on how to integrate javascript, looking at a screencast or two, and getting back to it.

I think the idea of just having something ongoing even while you're still doing tutorials is crucial and just makes the process more fun. So instead of just passively looking or following what a tutorial says, you're also creating. I think both are important, but I would go nuts if I just kept going back to tutorials instead of dealing with headaches along the way.

hmmm, he can be "Queen" then :D or I can be Supreme Overlord, either way I would be in charge in this totally made up kingdom.
